May GR Release Date?
Any news on when the ghost ratings will be released? I am sure to tumble in June's ratings, so I am looking forward to a brief celebration when May's ratings come out.

Local Elections: Does anyone really give a damn?
Ed Miliband clearly doesn't...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-27483541

With friends like Miliband, who needs enemies? But seriously, do local elections matter? And if they do how do we drum up public interest when even our politicians seem to treat them with contempt?

Have you ever had the feeling that you threw too much away?
In a metaphorical sense, mostly. So if ended too much when you decided to make a change for example. Not much to add myself, just interested.

Missing yachtsmen - please help
Hey guys. My amazing friend Vicky needs our help. Her cousin (once removed) is one of these missing yachtsmen, and there's every chance they could still be found if there's a concerted effort by the relevant authorities to search for them. On behalf of the families, who are worried sick, please join me in signing this:

"Dr. Rove"--Making Doctors Phil and Who Look Legit By Comparison!
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/dr-rove-doubles-down-hillary-203900415.html Funny...I don't recall Republicans seeming too concerned about McCain's skin cancer and swollen gland while he was running against Obama in 2008. Then again, he was a man and a Republican, not a woman and a Democrat. Sexism, partisan politics, or just one more sign Karl Rove needs to have a little lie down? Why choose when you can have all three!

New Response to jmo:

"I have no idea what the license situation is or was, Avalanche is the only one who can answer that. I also have no problem if the license requires that we credit someone for the original design. But let's be clear - there are huge swathes of the PlayDiplomacy.com codebase that I have written. We have kept to a large extent the original naming structure and design, but the code is vastly different. For example, the main engine (the Judge which does the adjudication) is all completely new - I rewrote it to fix all the problems with it. The base code has been changed to enable the use of better quality maps and icons, add new game versions, provide automated recovery and self-healing, change the scoring / rating system, change the statistics, change the way draws are handled...the list is endless. I suspect if we counted lines there is a relatively small percentage of original code remaining. The basic map display and messaging system is currently still quite similar to the way it was, but beyond that the vast majority of the code has been changed or rewritten.

I don't mean to sound grumpy, but I was annoyed that there seemed to bee some sort of implication (and maybe it is me being oversensitive) that our code base was mostly written be someone else. This is just not true."

Honestly, when PayDip gets slapped with a Cease and Desist from Hasbro for charging for a game they don't have the rights to, I'd just as soon not have anything linking them to use. And, let's be honest, their site is ugly as fuck. Why do we want credit for that?

Let's spend less time harassing other websites and more time improving our own.

@Abgemacht,

Sir, it is very noble of you to wish to take the high road. I for one wish nothing but the best to our esteemed colleagues of the Play Diplomacy online web video game site.

That being said, is it really advantageous for us to discourage our peers here, most of them highly devious teen-agers, not to troll those whom have earned their ire? Do you not on the balance appreciate the fine art of trolling?

In all seriousness though, trolling them is unnecessary and childish, but it's good to complain about them here every once in a while because they are just awful.

Their apparent lead developer doesn't understand how licenses work and refuses to acknowledge that anyone else may have contributed significantly to his project. Their owner seems to find joy in making all sorts of defamatory remarks about how unsuccessful kestas is and how much better he is while ignoring the fact that he was swindled by a bunch of sketchy "developers," is making money off of the work of the very person he's insulting, and is breaking the law in multiple ways while making that money. On top of that, the site is awful.

"and you as our Ombudsman should embody that."

Yeah, I'm not so sure you know what "ombudsman" means...

"Do you not on the balance appreciate the fine art of trolling?"

I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but most people on this site are not as good at trolling as they like to think they are.

I made that post because I happened to know that the owner had previously had a credit to Kestas on the about page, and I was annoyed when I noticed it was gone. I'll be discussing it with their admin and we'll see if I can't explain how a license works. People attacking them about it will just make that harder though.

Abgemacht,

Yes the millennials, or whatever the devil one calls young persons these days, seem to take no interest in devoting themselves to or perfecting any craft. That they do not exceed at trolling is testament not only to their lackadaisical character, but also their immense timidity and puscilaneousness.
I can admit that I've seldom known any of them to turn off the Facebook long enough to kick a football or take a walk.
But really, I take responsibility for this. If the young are overly restful, it is perhaps that no one has inspired them. No one has educated the young to understand that ambition is itself admirable. They have no role models - no one to look up to.

Yes, their attempts at trolling are feeble, but it is practice that can remediate this. Trolling, like Rome, can not be built in a day.

But on a slightly more serious note, why hasn't hasbro slapped paydip with a cease and desist?

I have ~10 real life friends who play there (much to my annoyance), and I've tried on multiple occasions to get them to play here instead, to no avail. As a result I do have an account there which I use exclusively to play with them.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

I would imagine hasbro either don't care or don't know. Possibly both.
The cost of enforcing a cease-and-desist order via lawsuit for something as niche as Diplomacy is almost certainly not worth whatever scant benefit in terms of increased board sales they might see.

I feel it might even hurt them. I never would have discovered the game if not for stumbling upon this website. I liked it so much my friends got me a boxed set for Christmas.

So I can't remove the Gold Star I gave myself and I feel like an ass...
With that being said: We have a yet-unused badge that we can give to people and I think we should do something with it. As a community, I'd like us to pick a couple people that we think have significantly contributed to the site and ask kestas to award them a gold star. Is this something people are interested in? Let's use this thread to discuss the idea (or other ways of using the star), rather than discussion potential recipients.

50%+ of People >35 Years Old Know About Holocaust (Why the Jews Need Israel)
http://news.yahoo.com/holocaust-anti-semitism-global-study-154731933.html That is honestly a bit surprising to me...if for no other reason than the fact that WWII is so "popular" in different kinds of media that you'd think that number would be higher. And this is yet another reason, as atheistic as I am, I'll always maintain the Jews need Israel--those are dangerous numbers, and it's good to know the Jews have a state and army with which to defend themselves.
