I don't know shit about gunboat, so I'm not sure I'd be the best person for this.

More of an advisory role, since you're a mod. Like, giving the TAs their player info (who they're teaching) and handling any pauses/disputes etc.

Learning about gunboat from Ronkokoma or Barnett or Czech or the real masters is a cool idea.

Learning about gunboat from the jerks who are just too big of assholes (sorry for the language) to play press games (chaqa, Draug [who might as well be a gunboater], MichiganMan, Strauss, ILN) doesn't interest me. And I think it represents the game badly. Okay, speech over.

I play press games all the time. I just prefer gunboat, because I suck at the diplomatic side of diplomacy (whereas I'm pretty good at the tactical side).

I'm up for trying my hand at either a TA or professor. A professor would probably be preferred (assuming you think I'm up to par), because I work a ton of hours, and I'd rather the students have a TA who is able to more reliably be available at different points throughout the day to make sure they are able to communicate with their student enough.

Also, this has been done before (at least, it was in the planning stages, but I'm not sure if it was ever executed). If I recall correctly, the countries for the TAs were not publicly known to avoid any concerns of meta-gaming (not the cheating variety). Say, for example, I was the Italian TA, and Chaqa was the Austrian TA, if I knew that Chaqa never covered Trieste, it could influence the advice I give to my student, consciously or otherwise.

For the students, it could go either way. I'd learn toward making the game non-anon, because it's nice having a name to a country for the spectators. It's more fun cheering "YEA! GO NEWGUNBOATPLAYER2014!!" than simply "YEA! GO AUSTRIA!". Additionally, these will be students who will be receiving advice from their TAs. I don't think their prior tendencies will factor in too much, even if their opponents chose to go back and look at them.

The let the TAs be anon , and ask the students to honor that,and the the students can be non-anon because their country will be random

Alright. I've sent out a bunch of PMs to everyone who has expressed interest. If I missed anyone, or if anyone else wants in in any role, let me know. Going to need at least one or two more students, I think (have 4-5 right now), and more TAs as well.

I'd love to help out with this. I acted as a TA in the last iteration and thought that was a great experience. I think if Rokokoma is willing he would be the best choice as a professor here, he definitely seems to enjoy that type of conversation.

For me, I tend to work lots of hours in the winter months (accountant). I would love to be able to add my comments in a thread, however, I worry I don't have the time to commit to every phase. I could commit to every year, for sure. So maybe if a few people (2wl, rdrivera,y2k - I'm looking at you) we could make this work.

As far as how we run it, it'll have standard GB settings (no messaging, WTA, anon), and it will be wait-for-orders if the mods can enable that.

Each TA will be assigned a country and will be in direct contact with that player
TAs and players will not know who the other TAs / players are besides themselves

Game will play until a solo, or until a stalemate has been reached for 2 years, unless all remaining players agree to end the game and draw.

If a replacement is needed, inform your TA who will inform the mods who will pause and send the country into CD.

I would like to help, as I have been TA and Professor in the classic SOW and it´s a really great experience and you learn a lot more then you teach.
But this time I am going into vacations by the end of the month, so I can´t commit being a TA or even a professor. If the game start soon I can at least ask some questions :-)
And we have a great list of TAs and Professors until now.

I would like to be a student if there is still room. I will need at least 36-hour phases, though. Of course, with the need to accommodate TA & commentary, even longer phases might be better.
