just have the DM do all dice rolls from random.org.

I've always believed that people should never see what the roll is. Besides, it gives the DM leeway to save a PC's ass if needed (or get him to fail a plot-advancing saving throw).

Draugnar (0 DX)

Well, they should do their own dice rolls for rolling up their character.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

You guys are making this much too complicated. Go into your basement and find your d20. Roll the die, take a picture of it with your Polaroid and fax it to the DM. We have technology now, let's use it.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

Draug: well that's fine, so long as it's under the DM supervision.

The first thing I learned during my brief stint as a DM is that rolls made away from my own eyes were never to be trusted.

Moot point, anyhow, as the newest character creation is not dice-based (I'm still not sure how I feel about that).

Hell, this sounds kinda fun. I want to try!
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
And suddenly every one will have perfect rolls with pictures to "prove" it. Gotta be done with video of the roll.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
If it ain't die based, I don't wanna play. But we can use the site I listed as it send the email to everyone you want it to and the DM can then verify the legitimacy of the rolls.

What would be the requirement on book ownership -- i.e. Player's Manual, what addition, etc. It's been...er...20+ years since I played old school D&D....i.e. older addition, but I think I know where a couple manuals are.

After playing neverwinter nights and such, I'm actually a fan of the newest edition rules. The feats are awesome and the character customization is nearly limitless (no more, "oh, you have to be an ELF to multiclass.")
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
So who wants to DM and how many players should we allow?
krellin (80 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
We used to play the Middle Earth Role Playing system after we ditched D&D (back in 1985ish...) MERP also allowed better customization - anyone could use magic, for example, but learning it cost more depending o your "base" class, and then you couldn't use it (as well) with certain armor, etc, but a wizard could strap on the chain mail if needed to get out of some place without an arrow in the back if the situation was dire and they were out of mana.

Ahhhh...those were the days...
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
19 Dec 13 UTC
I could DM, I think, but I don't have ANY manuals or anything like that.

I do know that I'm good at making it into a story rather than a "roll x - HIT" type thing. To me the RP is more what it's about than min/maxing your character.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
19 Dec 13 UTC
Wow, Draug, looks like most of the character creation and basic rules stuff is freeware now. I could really do it.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
19 Dec 13 UTC
I do think that playing on the forum itself could be a bit cumbersome (f'ing refresh button).

Some kind of live chat (better yet with graphics that I could update a map in real time) would be optimal.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
My thought was the forum for the ability to not have to be "live", but I could set up a mail distribution address for a game and we could do it email even.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Dec 13 UTC
Yeah I thought the idea was to use the forum to play a non live game. Like 3 times a day or something.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
If we wanted to do live, we could Skype that.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
19 Dec 13 UTC
3x a day? That would take a very, very long time to get anywhere. Far better to do it live, allocate a 2 hour block every week or something.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
But doing that would be difficult from a global player perspective.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
19 Dec 13 UTC
hmm... fuck anybody who isn't American? We pretty much go that route with every other decision.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
So what two hour block? Saturday 4-6 Eastern (1-3 Pacific)?
krellin (80 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
3x a day? It's would take three months to get past meeting in the bar, starting a fight, and finding out there is a haunted <x> down the road that needs clearing out...lol
krellin (80 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
Saturday (this Saturday) doesn't work for me :(

Steephie, watch your step or I'll run your ass out of the kingdom <sharpening my sword...>
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
19 Dec 13 UTC
Well, if it wasn't live, I figured it would be kind of like D&D Lite.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Dec 13 UTC
We could have discussion via email and then a final email to the DM that says "my player does thus" and set a deadline for it of say 1AM Eastern (10PM Pacific) every day when the DM does her thing and send us a RP style email describing in excruciating detail how we were hacked to bits.

Newbie question
Is it considered bad form to take advantage of the situation when a player appears to have left a game? More specifically is it bad form to resubmit orders just prior to a turn ending when it that player won't be submitting orders? Just wondering about the etiquette of that scenario on this site. Thanks in advance!

Money Philosophy
Liberals: Always focused on how to get other people's money, how to take money away from "rich" to give to others that have not earned it, but are somehow "owed" it (because they were born).

Conservatives: Focused on how to grow personal wealth, improve one's self and be financially self-reliant so as to not burden others.
