NFL Pick 'em: Week 6--Can the Giants Get A Win? Should the 'skins Change Their Name?
We start Week 6 with a game that looked a LOT better before the season started, the Giants and the Cowboys. The Cowboys and Redskins play on Sunday Night, an always-fun match-up (what do you think about the Redskin name, by the way, change it or no?) and there are plenty of interesting games with the Pack and Ravens going at it, the Saints and Patriots going head-to-head, and more. So, Week 6, here we go...PICK 'EM!

Are you a fuloughed US employee? Do you like free stuff?
Apparently GOG is giving away free video games to anyone who sends them an email with a picture of them, and their furlough notice. I remember some people complaining on this forum about being furloughed by don't remember who. So public notice y'all. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128554-GOG-Offers-Free-Games-to-Furloughed-U-S-Employees

Shoddy Peer Review in Open Access Journals
As reported in Science (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/342/6154/60.full):
Open Access Journals may be more likely to accept suspect papers (as they are paid by the authors) as demonstrated by Bohannon, who submitted a clearly false paper to several hundred journals, to be rejected by less than half.

You don't need to say sorry Draugnar, I was just surprised and blaming Obama while I was at it :)
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

So to my understanding, the way this works is...

The speaker will traditionally not call a vote to the floor that does not have majority support of his own party. This *usually* works out fine, since a bill without the majority of the majority won't pass anyways.

This case is a little different, because there are sufficient republicans (the majority party) who would vote yes, but Boehner won't call the vote because his base will be pissed off.

So here we sit.

And some idiots still pretend like it isn't entirely the Republicans fault what we're going through. hehehe. I mean Obama. Obama's fault.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
No was that so hard?

Running their poll data through Excel shows someone miscounted. There are only 17 Republican yes votes for a budget with no strings attached. One Republican was willing to raise the debt ceiling but not approve a budget.

Technically, if you could convince all 17 to jump ship and they followed through, you would squeak by with the two open seats. But just barely. If even one didn't, you wouldn't get it.
1. Fuck you draug, "was it that hard," give me a fucking break, this is from a poster notorious about not citing a thing and passing off half witted opinions as fact. you asked I provided in my first post afterwards you piece of shit. Forget about the fact it's on cnn front page and your lazy ass could have seen it whenever you liked. It's funny how the people who make the biggest deal about citations are the ones that cite least (draug, Botox etc.)

"And some idiots still pretend like it isn't entirely the Republicans fault what we're going through. "

YJ - tell me why the Democrats are not 100% culpable for current pain being suffered by children who can not recieve treatment from teh NIH, for example --- because the Republicans in teh House HAVE PASSED FUNDING LEGISLATION....26 BILLS, IN FACT....which Harry Reid refuses to bring to a vote on the Senate floor.

You lefties are pathetic. Bash Republicans all you want for this...but if you do so, have enough intellectual integrity to give it to the Democrats and OBAMA for their refusal to help the suffering children of America.
Krellin, using children with cancer for political gain was a cheap ploy that everyone sees through besides the ones that choose not to.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
So you see through the libtard Harry Reid's using the kids for political gain by not even allowing a vote the Senate floor for even one of the bills to fund them. Good to know.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
08 Oct 13 UTC
I'm confused, krellin, and I don't know much about it. Can you break it down for me?

You are saying that the republicans have passed funding legislation through that would end the government shutdown if only the senate would pass it?

Does this funding legislation happen to have anything attached to it that would ensure Obamacare doesn't go into effect as planned? If so, then it isn't just "funding legislation" and the democrats are well within their rights to slap it down. If not, then I think you need to explain to me what I'm missing.
Yes what possible political gain did he get from that. It was a definite loss that was necessary in order to retain solidarity with all of those affected by the shut down.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
08 Oct 13 UTC
And I apologize for the idiots thing :)

Mouth faster than brain, as usual.
But all of this is a moot point. Polls now show republicans are losing ground with the public as now 71% of Americans disapprove of congressional republicans handling if negotiations. That's down 8 D. You guys are in some serious trouble. Kiss the house goodbye.

Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
08 Oct 13 UTC
Well it's not really a moot point. I'm not just a bandwagon democrat supporter who thinks a dem victory is all that's important. I'm more concerned with what's best for the American people, and so I'd very much like to hear more information on this funding legislation krellin is talking about.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
@YJ "You are saying that the republicans have passed funding legislation through that would end the government shutdown if only the senate would pass it? "

The Republicans have passed 26 individual funding bills. These are targetted to specific things...the anaology is this: You need groceries, but wife and you can't agree on protein, because you want cow and she's vegan, and you both need to sign the checks. So you make your grocery list for everything you need, but you can never agree because of the beef vs. tofu debate...and your kid Johhny is starving, but you can't go shopping because won't sign the check.

Eventually, you decide to get smart...you can both agree on vegatables...so you make a veggy list, and will buy veggies with one check. Then you make a separate toiletry list, and put a check on it for her to sign. Then you make a list for the pets, etc. You present each of these lists and checks to you wife in hopes you can at least buy the things individually that you need and agree upon, even if you still argue about the protein.

But, instead of going ahead and approvign the vegetables, the cat food, etc as individual expenditures, the wackjob wife says no way...unless she gets her tofu and no beef, nobody gets anything...and she tells you to fuck off, and says she doesnt care is Johhny is starving.

The Vegan wife is the Democrat party under Harry Reid and Obama.
What krellin's talking about, if I can get meaning through all the slurs, is a series of partial resolutions to fund parts of the government that Republics like or are taking heat over, without actually coming up with an actual budget. The point, if the Democrats were ever stupid enough to take them up on their offer, is to remove any incentive the Republicans ever have of compromising for essentially the foreseeable future of the Republic.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Bob - there were no slurs. Good lord, get a grip.

Yes, the Democrats would be stupid to fund the National Institute of Health so kids in cancer treatment research could continue there possibly life-saving treatments…THAT would be stupid according to Bob.

There is *no* morality left in the Democrat party if you think that is a reasonable stance.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Further Bob....the Republicans have passed ***many*** budgets this year. Harry Redi has refused to take a vote on them. Please stop lying, Bob. It's one thing to be a Liberal...but when you have to constantly lie to support your case, even you should realize maybe something is wrong with your stance.
I'm not concerned with the rei an people. Honestly I don't give a shit about healthcare. Healthcare is not the point. The problem is that this legislative tactic employed by the republicans is extremely damaging to the country. Playing chicken with the debt ceiling and the government would be an incredibly dangerous precedent if it is successful. I would feel the same way if democrats employed it.
Right back to slurs, I see. Not completely unexpected. Anyway, carry on with your evangelism, krellin. I'm not really interested in a conversation with you, I was just translating for yellowjacket.
Rei an is supposed to be American and supposed to have a question mark
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Santa - you are of course LYING AGAIN. They are not even talking about the debt ceiling yet, and you know it. STOP LYING SANTA.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Bob, I see you have resorted to the tactic of "I have no argument to support the Democrats, so I will say something negative, take my ball and go home".

Good job, Bob...You are just like Obama and Reid...no arguments to support their actions, so they just refuse to play. You are a good sheep.
Krellin grasping at straws. Not even relevant to my post of course.

Also krellin, draug, my condolences that the federal shutdown has reached the private sector this Tuesday. Tragic.
And I'm not sure what you mean that they aren't talking about the debt ceiling.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Santa....continuously changing the topic when he has no arguments to support his case in the existing conversation. Poor little Santa.

If Santa really cared about the people, as he professes, he would encourage Harry Reid to pass the funding for NIH, the VA and other things as passed by the Republicans in 26 individual bills to fund the government. But Santa does NOT care about the people, just as Reid and Obama do not care who they hurt as they refuse to fund the government.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
Santa - Please cite what you are talking about so I can read it. Seriously, I want to read the news to which you refer.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
@Santa - "And I'm not sure what you mean that they aren't talking about the debt ceiling. you aren't sure what "

The Democrats have REFUSED TO COME TO THE TABLE and discuss ANYTHING, Santa....sorry you have been caught in another lie…There are no discussions going on in Washington right now because Reid and Obama refuse to sit down and talk. You know this, everyone knows this. So stop lying. Obama and Reid openly admit they won’t sit down and talk, so trying to say they are makes you look incredibly stupid.
Yes your previous post was a flawless argument that required a response, got it. "You're lying Santa! They [who?] aren't even talking a out the debt ceiling yet [yes they are to the press]"

I said what I care about, this tactic is a disastrous precedent. I hope it fails and the republicans get destroyed in the next election so it never rears its head again.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
SANTA - last I knew, the press was unable to right legislation or pass law. I could care less if they were talking with Jesus about the debt ceiling...it's meaningless as far as the operation of our government goes. If the situation were reversed, you would be screaming your head off. It's sad to watch you blatant hypocrisy on such ugly display. Have a little intellectual integrity..it might make you feel better about yourself.
Absolutely, and I am 100% supportive of them not negotiating and validating this tactic. The only thing that will change my mind is if negotiating avoids a default. Unfortunately that action will also validate this reckless gambit and make such standoffs a perpetual occurrence and destroy the fabric of our government.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Oct 13 UTC
@SANTA - so, first you say they are negotiating about the debt ceiling, now you say they aren't...see what happens when you life consists of one lie after the other to support your morally perverted party? It gets hard to keep track of your evil after a while, and you end up looking stupid, as you do now.

A Nobel in Two Pages
Physical Review is making available for free the papers that won the Physics Nobel Prizes this year (for the prediction of the Higgs boson). One of them is two pages, and the other is three. That's not so uncommon in physics, but it's still remarkable how tersely a great idea can be communicated. Here is the link for the interested:
