Short Story of the Day
Hi! I am starting a new thread where I will post a new short story each day this week (each business day, anyway). I am hoping people will read and (if inclined) discuss the stories.

So, the following is my first forum discussion in the intro to business practice...
The topic of this forum thread was "Is Wal-Mart's business practices good or fair? Both or neither?"

the liberals will probably like my response and the conservatives hate it, but I think it will be an interesting discussion for us here and I got to refer back to a HuffPo article listed here sometime back. So COOL!

Of Twerking and Terrible, Terrible Pop Songs--What Do We Pay Attention To?
So until today I was blissfully unaware of what the VMAs even were, let alone (Facebook jokes aside) what happened there with a certain Ms. Cyrus and...you know, forgoing all of...that (though really, WTF?!) I'd rather ask another question--assuming that most here likewise couldn't care less about Ms. Cyrus or Mr. Bieber or *Insert Pop Icon For the Masses Here*...what DO we care about, and why does the majority gravitate to these things we raise eyebrows at?

Is it sexist when...
...your professor, a woman, asks *everyone* in the class to post an introduction then posts public responses *only* to the women in the class?

So far, not a woman has been missed, and not a man has been replied to.

As for your determination to wait...to "observe and colllect"...I think some real data keeping is necessary here. If there is anything in the class for which the grades are *subjective*, i.e. evaluation of writing assingments...and the men do poorer than the women, and she has ignored the men...you will have cause for action with the Dean of the school.

As with any good businessman, you have identified a potential concern in a process. It is not yet verified, but you need to have an action plan in place to respond in the end should the turn-out be unnecessarily negative for you. Give her the benefit of the doubt...but be prepared to act.

As the greatest President of the last 100+ years said: "Trust but verify"

DeVry is not a technical school. In fact, DeVry owns Keller School of Management, a well respected MBA program school. DeVry is a business oriented school so no degrees in fine arts or world lit or such, and no sports teams, but it is a school for people who want a real life applicable Bachelor's degree.
philcore (317 D(S))
02 Sep 13 UTC
DeVry used to be called DeVry Technical Institute. I wasn't calling its reputation into question as much as trying to make a sexist comment about female profs at a technical school. You know, for the irony, considering the thread topic.

Wow, even I am surprised at #2.

Answer the question, list all the reasons why a socialist system "might be" the best (she is well within her rights to ask this) and then, after you've mentioned the reasons, if you feel otherwise, I'm sure you can provide an eloquent argument as to why you feel that way.

She can't downgrade you because you disagree with her, especially if you make it clear you understand the material while at the same time pointing out the reasons why it's wrong. Does that make sense?

Can I ask what class this is?

I'm curious, abge, if you are serious? My hope is that he doesn't take on the typical role of modern youth: Close your mouth and be a good sheep, ignore right and wrong as you know it and accept the brain-washing of the professor, who by no means has any personal agenda <rolls eyes...>

What Draug has described is actually *very* disturbing...a professor ignoring all the men in the class. Were the situation reversed, some feminist in the class would already have it on the local news...seriously!

So I hope Draug *is* the old guy in class that teaches the youth/sheep that it is OK to stand up for what is right, even as a white guy...
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
03 Sep 13 UTC
Well hang on now, we don't have enough information to know how much brainwashing is going on. It could be a class section about comparative government or some such. Maybe there are documented reasons that the professor feels socialist systems do better in emergency situations.

Emphasis on maybe. I'd like a bit more detail before I crucify the lady.

sexism is an institutional phenomenon perpetuated of power structures throughout society. 1 woman is hardly an institutional force.

Mendax must be one of the apologists for black racists as well. Sorry Mendax, but sexism and racism are individual actions and should never be tolerated from *anyone*.

Three chapters plus a lecture. It's a lot of reading, but I will give you my insights, as biased as they may be as well, when I complete the reading.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
03 Sep 13 UTC
Sexism and racism are individual actions, except when they are not.

Skipping racism for now, I think you'd be hard pressed to argue that sexism is purely an individual action. With women making, what is it, 70 cents on the dollar that men make, that would be a hell of a coincidence if it was all just due to individual sexists across the board. With that many millions of people to draw the statistics from, it seems clear to me that sexism is still an institution in this country.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Sep 13 UTC
It was half in jest. I just thought it was funny that Draug found some horrible injustice to complain about the first week of class.

Obviously, if this continues, he should speak up. One instance is a bit hard to be sure of anything. Honestly, I've seen rosters that arrange students by gender and since F comes before M, the Prof. may have just been going down the list.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Sep 13 UTC
@YJ - I was just pointing out that mendax seems to think if it isn't institutional or majority against minority, it isn't an "ism". And that simply isn't true. DiscriminTion can be institutional or individual and individual discrimination can be minority against majority and is just as unjustified, immoral, and disgusting as typical majority against minority discrimination. Being part of an oppressed group does not grant one carte blanche to treat others bad.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
03 Sep 13 UTC
Oh, well I agree with you 100% on that.
ghug (5068 D(B))
03 Sep 13 UTC
Ignoring the big issue here because everyone seems to have already said that it does seem sexist, you should wait a little while to make sure and then call her out, etc., I'll move on to the issue with question two. Why is there anything wrong with the second question? You're taking a class that seems focused on comparing socialism and capitalism, and I think that means you should be able to argue why socialism *might* be better in a certain situation. She could just as easily have asked you why capitalism might be better, but odds are that she knows 90% of you will give that answer in the first question and wants to see that you can argue both sides of the issue.

Anyway, good luck with school and all that. /drunkenghugramblings
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Sep 13 UTC
The class is introduction to business. The question males the presumption that socialism is better at dealing with major disasters. Not may be better but is better. That is a biased question.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Sep 13 UTC
Read the question again. It is "why *is* socialism better..." and not "Why might socialism be better...". Do you not see the inherent bias now?

I will be leaving this site (for now)
There is a very obvious reason associated with this, specifically that we are discussing the same thing over and over again, and not getting anywhere. I certainly enjoyed my time on this forum, but now I am moving on to a Traditionalist Catholic forum (http://catholicforum.fisheaters.com) because it sounds like a fun trolling project and I can't let Sbyvl get away from me. If you wish to contact me, you can't, because phones didn't exist in 1625 and that's the time I live in.
