For profit prisons?
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/13/681261/mississippi-schools-sending-kids-to-prison-for-misbehaving-in-the-classroom/?mobile=nc

When you put private companies in charge of prisons they make a profit, can you do the same with education and pay for it with public money? i mean prison is free for the user right? Why not run schools on this basis too??

Putn33 on Churchill: "Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One"...Fact or Fiction?
Putin, you're free to comment, freer to drop one of your clever cries of "jackass" or "doofus" below for my daring to disagree.
I don't think Churchill was "a Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One."
But maybe I'm wrong...am I? Have I missed a key memoir where Winston vows to expunge the Catholics or Jews or threatened to murder someone for saying the bar was empty or something? Or...is Putin being Putin?

Daily Bible Reading
Wherein the ancient story of God and man, heaven and hell, life and death, love and hate, sacrifice and murder, the fall and the rescue, and angels and demons, continues.

(This thread will replace the previous Daily Bible Reading threads, so let's continue the conversation in this one instead of the previous ones.)

@ Greyson, I think an analogy to your question, "Why is it that in some cases religion can motivate one to act in such a brutal, ignorant way and yet in others can be a positive transforming force that can motivate one to act in such a selfless way for the benefit of others?" would be something like this: "Why is it that in some cases the highway system can take you to a neighborhood with bars on all the windows where it's dangerous to drive, and yet in others it can be a pathway to some of the most amazing views on the planet?" Because "religion" can lead in all kinds of directions. The important thing is not religion, which can be defined as a system of rules leading to reward, but relationship with the living God. Striving to be good doesn't work; plugging into God's power does. Yes, Christians are still sinful, unlike the claims made about Buddha, but progressively being changed as we allow God to work in our lives, and *one day* we will be with him and our character will be transformed into a sinless one like his.

Today's Bible reading is John 18,
http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Jhn&c=18&v=1&t=NLT
in which Judas betrays Jesus, Peter fights for and is rebuked by Jesus, but later denies him three times, and Jesus stands trial twice in the middle of the night and then again before Pilate, the Roman governor, who says that he is innocent. Pilate and Jesus have the following conversation, which ties into Crazy's point about government:
33 Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.
34 Jesus replied, “Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”
37 Pilate said, “So you are a king?”
Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”
38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime."
(...but of course, as we will soon see, that's not the end of the story.)

Pilate is a great character. He's a Roman, but his way of thinking is Greek. All around him, people (including Jesus) are dead certain they know the truth. But he isn't. He doesn't seem to have preconceptions and takes things in stride. He wants to be just, but more than anything he wants peace. A fine human being who just happened to sentence a god to death.

Now wait, TWA, you cannot seriously believe in the Olympian deities! Woden placed the artifacts, inscriptions, and towering temples there to test your faith! Everyone knows that! Those things are simply not real!
dubmdell, I urge you to reconsider your ignorant ways. It would be a real shame if you provoked Zeus' anger.

Well you believe what you want. Your religion is in the myth's section of my library.
Hey, what a coincidence! I used to work at a public library in Baton Rouge and we shelved Christian stories with those myths. :)

only God know's and Jesus too.
You didn't use the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress, Pres? What system did you use? Dewey and Library of Congress both treat Mythology within or alongside religion. Christianity is clearly treated separately as are Islam, Judaism, Himduism, etc. Was the intent here anattempt to assert that Chritianity is just another system of myths? The very evidence you cite (I think the Library of Congress trumps the Baton Rouge Public Library although I'm sure with you on the staff it was an excellent institution) doesn't support that notion. Religion, mythology, and rationalism are all treated in the same class. Modern religions are treated as a subset of the class separate from mythology just as rationalism is.
Kind af silly this line of reasoning though. It's a tired fallacy that religion is the same as mythology. it even has it's own name Faulty generalization. The fact that mythology is a form of religion doesn't mean that all religions are a form of mythology, any more than the fact that a dog is a mammal means that all mammals are dogs.

LOC classification files both mythology and religion under "B - Philosophy, Psychology, Religion" subclass "BL - Religions, Mythology, Rationalism," although they are in different categories within the subclass. Public libraries typically use Dewey, although some are moving toward a bookstore-type model of categorizing books by type, similar to a B&N layout. Dewey classifies both religion and mythology under the 200s, "Religion." Curiously, the system devotes seven subclasses to Christianity-related topics and lumps all other religions (including Greek & Roman) under "Other" in the 290s.

tl;dr - Christianity (and other religions) are given the same general classification as Greek & Roman mythology, which makes sense because they're all, you know, religion. Dont read into it too much.
Yes, we used DDS. The joke, of course, was that his faith, Christianity, is featured there as well, because it is within the same rough grouping (all within the 200s), and because the area I worked was comparatively small, there would be occasions where yes, in fact, a book from the 220s (Bible) might end up mixed with 200s (general religion) or 290s (non-Christian religions, featuring mythology), and thus it would be in the "myths" section. Don't bother nitpicking it too much there, CA, it's a lighthearted jab considering there actually isn't a separate "myths" area at all and thus fuzzy's actual statement is a bit, well, fuzzy. Yeah, I kinda figured. No worries I was more addressing TWA's Zeus and Norse mythology trolling as well. Seems a little silly when a few guys expressly state "Hey we're going to go over here and discuss this" that it draws so much from the trolls. I'm used to it and it makes them pretty easy targets for slicing up the faulty logic, but still if you place any other literary work even religious ones (except possibly the Koran) in the space occuppied by the bible, the scandal dries up. Again I think it speaks to the power of the language, themes, and influence in the Bible that thousands of years later there is so much controversy surrounding it.

Greyson, the claims that Buddha transcended this world. Awkward, why do you feel called to spam this thread? Why don't you start your own thread about Zeus, instead? Nigee, in response to "What will happen to gay/lesbians people when God/Jesus comes back?"--that depends on whether they are trusting Jesus for their salvation, just like everybody else. Crazy, you make some extremely good points, as always!
Mujus, I have made it clear that my proselytizing is the good work of the service of Zeus. Like Periphas, I will be rewarded.

It may be an uncomfortable realization for you, but Zeus is the greatest of all gods. You still have time to come around. I will pray for you.
