Learnt something new about the Dip Rules yesterday...Spaces with 2 Coasts
I may not be the only one but I did not realize that a fleet can support a unit sitting on a coast it cannot access. So for instance, a Fleet in the West Med supported a fleet sitting on the Spanish North Coast. Learn something new every day...

Site Feature Additions
The mods have often invited suggestions for feature changes and I wanted to check if there is anything in the works for the following:

I understand your point of view: Why make he game requirements smaller when we can play on the internet with so many users. My point of view is for those of us who want to play on webDip's cool maps with our 3-4 other irl friends but don't want to be banned for meta gaming. Many bans could be prevented from friends excited of playing in the same game talking about it during school or work.

I still say I'd love to have in-game messages sent to my phone and allow me to reply.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

@mitomon, first, you never have to worry about meta-gaming if you run your own server, though i don't think webdip is particularily user-friendly to install, it's not that hard.

And second, i don't see why i would object to you getting to do what you want. So if you'd like to play the smaller player version, i've no reason to get in your way. I can actually see the appeal of playing with IRL friends (some of whom you may have many years of tactical gameplay experience)

So webdip is downloadable?
thorfi (1023 D)
03 May 15 UTC
Bottom of every page, link to "GitHub project". You will need to know how to install it under an Apache web server with PHP, I think that's basically it.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
04 May 15 UTC
apache, php5, mysql, and last time i installed i think there was some tweaking to get the database hocked up correctly...

Not too hard, but if you've never installed apache before, it may take some learning.

And if all you really want is to play games with friends, jdip is probably better ( http://jdip.sourceforge.net/ )

I agree with Orathaic- webdip is available for install for people who want to work on the code (who will need a test server), people who want to install a translation in another language (there's an Italian one and I think a German one out there somewhere), or people who want to do something different with the code (like feature a lot of variants - eg vDip and Oli's excellent work over there).

If you're just looking to play with friends (but not face-to-face), then having one friend do the adjudication in something like jDip or Realpolitik probably fits your needs better.

Alternatively, if you want to *cheat* with friends, then Orathaic has written a variant just for that purpose:

http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~orathaic/multiswebdip/

If you do try to install webdip and you run in to any problems, shoot me a PM and we'll sort you out.

Suggestion: allow for name changes. You could make it a once a year thing. This way a player can change their name when it no longer represents them. For example if I start playing at 14 and name myself KanyeisGod but then grow out of listening to the garbage that is Kanye West then I can change my name to something more appropriate like BeyonceisOverrated.... comedy aside you get my point.

The change from ppsc to wta as default half a year ago was a great improvement.
Perhaps "anonymous players" and "hidden draw votes" should be the default settings for a new game, instead of "non-anonymous" and "public draw votes".
Right now the vast majority of new games already are anon; besides, anon helps to prevent meta-gaming.
Although a relatively novel feature, hidden draws seem to be used in roughly half of the new games; in my humble opinion, this interesting option also improves game play.

As now RR has taken hold as a setting, is it possible to get a GR setting too. Define it by over all or wta. But say a setting like top 200.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

GR isn't integrated with the site, so this will have to wait until we do a full overhaul of the rating system.

I'm not colorblind, but I'm old and my eyes suck.. Turning on the colorblind option makes life SOO MUCH BETTER. Having the Sender's country in the global chat is a huge, and welcome, change.

Occasional bug: Small map doesn't appear when I have color blindness (the Duo*) setting on SOMETIMES. Refreshing doesn't help.

Does closing the browser fix it?
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

When I tried out the color blind schemes, it didn't autorefresh. But when I switched phases back and forth the colors seemed to render properly.
jbalcorn (429 D)

@jmo - usually, yes. But so does going back out to home and coming back in. Most of the time. Damn annoying bug....

A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

jbalcorn: I think the map not appearing sometimes is an unrelated bug. I've had that before the colourblindness fix, and I *think* it's either a network issue or related to phases that have recently changed (but haven't had the time to look in to it yet). Refreshing after a second or two usually fixes it, which leads me to believe it's timing related.

Jeff: I'm not sure what you mean by autorefresh, but changing the settings will only affect pages you load in the future, not pages you already have open.

JamesYanik: What browser are you using? If the maps don't change when you open games after changing the colourblind option, try clearing your cache. The relevant scripts should have been reloaded correctly already, but perhaps they aren't on your browser for some reason.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
19 May 15 UTC
jbalcorn: I'll probably add the ability to see the country name in chat along with the original colours at some point.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
19 May 15 UTC
@ATC: Changing the color setting does *something*, and whatever that something is makes the map disappear completely until you load it again. I assumed the site attempted to refresh the page with the new color settings. I suppose now that's not correct.
jbalcorn (429 D)

@ATC THe map not showing up happens a LOT with colorblind options on. It almost never happens when they're off.

I've found a possible cause for the blank map, and hopefully fixed it (although I wasn't able to reproduce the problem, so I'm not certain). Let me know if you have the blank map again.

@ATC so far, all maps come up in Colorblind mode. Thanks!
