This is probably irrelevant to most of you, but my second daughter just came into the world. Where do I go to share this news? Webdip.
In any event, she's healthy and I am one happy papa.

Let's see YJ post his thoughts here and I will very possibly switch my vote.
Well, I am unsure of how truthful Chaqa was being about having played, he was one of the first to sign up. Also while he has contributed, I believe he is not a big enough contributor, so his loss would not be a huge detriment if we are wrong.
Sorry, not having played.
krellin (80 DX)
04 Apr 14 UTC
Jok3r - I don't think inexperience can necessarily account for contradictory statements, if you believe such have been made. In fact, we yave no idea how much anyone has played - thus basing a vote on experience or lack of is questionable. And yes, that means some of my reasoning re: Chaqa's experience is not valid - none the less my vote stands, for the other reasons I have stated.

But I am of open mind to change my vote.
WardenDresden (239 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
I think neither experience nor *volume* of contribution is necessarily a good basis for the lynch votes. But for now I'm going to stick with my vote on Abgemacht for now. I'm unconvinced that Chaqa is mafia, and I think the post count thing was useful for continuing the discussion since I'm lazy. I'm not exactly the most prolific poster, and I don't think targetting the lowest volume posters is the best way. In my experience of personal games, it's usually the mafia who does the most talking, often debating each other and making fake accusations at each other in order to divert suspicion.
So, I guess we should wait for Yellowjacket to find his way out of the labyrinth of posts and express his opinion on the situation.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Sorry, yes, I'm trying to parse may way througha viable strategy here. So far it looks too balanced to find an easy win.

All I can say so far is that I'm a vanilla townsfolk, and I'm willing to die to prove it :)
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Maybe this was said already, but when someone is lynched or killed, is their role revealed?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
04 Apr 14 UTC
I don't see why it would be.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
It is. I confirmed this with PE.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
roles are revealed as people are killed.

I am tentatively in favor of lynching somebody. I'd rather it wasn't me, but I understand the strategy so I accept the decision without complaint if that's the way we want to go... but let me keep thinking on strategy...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Oh, that's odd. Well, I guess that's good for us, so I shouldn't complain.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Honestly, I think most people were voting for you because it looked like you would be eliminated anyway.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Well, I don't have anything else to say at this point. I just request you guys don't waste votes to lynch me, as I'm a town member.

Beyond that, I still think no lynch is wisest.

To those who were voting to lynch 2WL, I politely request you change or pull your votes just in case. Yellowjacket shouldn't be penalized for 2WL's inactivity.
So abge, do you have an idea on who you want to kill now?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Well, we could go for one of the other quite-types. I still think being overly quite is suspicious. Plus, if it's just a shot in the dark, I'd rather have fun talkative people left alive. I do still believe we're compelled to pick someone, though.

@Krellin - I didn't say his thoughts were contradictory. I just said they didn't make sense. There's been some comments he's made that definitely scream inexperience.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
What seriously? A dead person's role is revealed? That takes a lot of fun out of the game, especially if interesting roles like cop or serial killer die early - no one can pretend to be them.

I would like to voice my protest of that rule - I've never played that way. It makes it too easy for us to win.

If however the rule will not be changed I guess I'd be more amenable to lynching.

I still think it's stupid though... Why would a corpse tell what a live person could not?
krellin (80 DX)
04 Apr 14 UTC
Jok3r - none the less, I felt, right or wrong, that he was directing hostility my way unnecessarily early on, and thus my stance remains. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I can't shake my feeling at this point. I am still open the change, but do not feel compelled at this time. We still have uncast votes - how they play out may impact my decision, especially if a late voting block arises....which I might find suspicious in and of itself.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
I guess I need to chime in again. I was not "directing hostility unnecessarily". You were actively pushing to lynch one of the no-lynchers, which included myself at the time. I was also one of the two most vocal of the group, with Thucydides, making me, in my eyes, a higher profile target.

Because of this I was not friendly towards you. I thought we put this behind us about 6 pages back until my minor comment a few posts ago got you angry for no reason. Me saying "My view on krellin was defensive" somehow crossed a line for you, when I was just explaining what had happened from my view.

Vote to lynch me or not, I don't give a crap. As far as I know you could be a mafia member, and I'm not going to make judgement about it until I know better.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

For what it's worth, the only thing I can say so far is that I find thucy's suggestions suspicious. He suggests that if the doctor is endangered, he declare he's the doctor to save himself. This is a terrible idea, because it's basically giving the 5 bad guys a get out of jail free card:

Whoever first declares "I'm the doctor!" when threatened is only 1/6 likely to be the doctor (assuming the mafias and serial killer would leap at the opportunity to say so). So our best bet is we kill him anyways. It's the best gamble we're going to find - but thucy would rather take the 66% chance that the first mafia guy who gets targetted will get a free pass, and a 33% chance that the mafia will identify either the doctor or serial killer even if that fails.

Pair that with his strong preference to NOT lynch on turn 1 (which seems to me to be the obvious correct choice for a villager)

Thucy is a sharp fellow, and he is surely aware of both of these contingencies.

##vote lynch Thucy unless somebody can tell me why I'm wrong.

Chaqa: "I thought we put this behind us about 6 pages back"

Silly Chaqa, you must be new here. Krellin never puts things in the past.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Also, keep in mind that if I'm wrong, no biggie, but if I'm right, it means you can be fairly sure I'm honest, because the mafia hasn't yet gotten a chance to discuss amongst themselves any sort of "sacrificial mafia" strategies. For me to be mafia I'd have to be acting alone in this suggestion, sacrificing a person I knew was an ally without even discussing it with him.
"Maybe this was said already, but when someone is lynched or killed, is their role revealed?"

Yes, it is. I didn't initially state that in the rules because it's standard operating procedure in every forum mafia community I've ever seen; I wasn't actually aware people played without it as standard practice! (I've seen variants where they do this, but rarely.)
krellin (80 DX)
04 Apr 14 UTC
Jok3r - please keep this game focused. I have repeated I have no reason to change my mind. Further, I was *not* the first vote for Chaqa. Lastly....YJ might jusr persuade me, as Thucy as well came out of the gates swinging and making contradictory statements. Either one is good swinging in the wind at this point, I think.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Krellin, you weren't the first because captainmeme made a vote, but he said he was open to changing it and hasn't yet returner. So his vote is about as serious as Rihanna's acting career.
TheJok3r (765 D)
04 Apr 14 UTC
YJ - I agree that Thucy does strike me suspicious but this is largely because we have such differing opinions on how to handle Day 1.

He does have a couple things going for him that make me not want to vote for him however.
1. He's an active contributor to the game. Lynching somebody willing to participate is almost always a mistake, unless they have severely slipped.

2. His willingness to keep arguing kept him near the center of attention. I don't really see a mafia member wanting to do that. I certainly wouldn't want to draw attention to myself if I was scum.

I'm interested to see what Thucy can provide tomorrow and going forward. If he's town, his willingness to be active will be indispensable. But, if he's scum, his frequent posting will eventually come full circle and he'll reveal himself. I don't think Thucy should be our target today.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
04 Apr 14 UTC
Well, fine I guess it makes more sense to lynch now, knowing that, but I still don't know who we would lynch. Also I'm sort of tired and don't really follow your accusation against me YJ, what did I do wrong? The doctor thing was an idle comment, but yeah if the doctor were about to get lycnhed he better do whatever he can to get out of it for all our sakes, up to and including revealing his identity.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
04 Apr 14 UTC
I agree with TheJoker, and while I disagree with a number of the points he's made, I'm not sensing a mafia vibe from Thucy at the moment.

It's Maple's Alter Ego! (But Seriously--Should Serling Be Forced to Sell the Team?)
http://nba.si.com/2014/04/29/donald-sterling-adam-silver-nba-owners-reaction/ To be clear--this is HYPOTHETICAL. There's nothing in the NBA Constitution that gives the commissioner the right to do this, so this is more just a thought experiment--say that power existed, and Adam Silver COULD force Serling to sell the team based on his repeated racist comments over the years, with this last doozy being the kicker. If the power existed, SHOULD the man lose his team over this?

Gunboat game for the reliable but poor
I'm tired of the NMRs and CDs that are far too common i the low-bet games I can afford to play. I'd love to play in the big-pot games with the best players, but I don't have the $ (and, hey, I'm not that good anyway). If there are other middle of the road players who feel the same way, perhaps we can organize a password-protected game (or two if there's enough interest) of reliable gunboaters. More below.

Phase length for FTF games?
I've been thinking about putting together a face to face game for some new players (friends who don't play diplomacy.... yet). But, I've never played FTF myself - so:

What kind of phase lengths do people use? I assume that there's also a time or turn cap too (eg game ends in 1910)?

Underage Drinking
Two IU players busted for underage drinking, one I know well. I guess the shocking part of their arrests is that the police in B-town are such assholes that they go around hunting for underage drinkers on Little 500 Day.

Please tell me no one on webDip suffered until 21 before their first drink.

Woody Allen, child molestor[?], given a lifetime achievement award.
So, one of my courses this semester is about "contemporary issues" and one of the issues I'm supposed to debate during our final is whether Woody Allen deserved the lifetime achievement award given to him by the Golden Globes. I've been assigned to argue on the side that he should not have gotten the award. And I want to hear what the people of WebDip think. Source links in the thread.
