Learnt something new about the Dip Rules yesterday...Spaces with 2 Coasts
I may not be the only one but I did not realize that a fleet can support a unit sitting on a coast it cannot access. So for instance, a Fleet in the West Med supported a fleet sitting on the Spanish North Coast. Learn something new every day...

Site Feature Additions
The mods have often invited suggestions for feature changes and I wanted to check if there is anything in the works for the following:

Or at least reset and go back to "waiting for players". Since no moves will hae been made yet it shouldn't be hard to keep it a prestine game, no need to go back to completely scrap the game.

For goodness sake, can we PLEASE get rid of the Defeated games out of our 'current' list of games? Not only is it out of your hands, it's depressing!

The site should have an option to text/email me to notify when a game's phase updates.

Also, ipad/android apps?
ghug (5068 D(B))
29 Mar 15 UTC
teacon, do have any specific complaints about the functionality of the site on mobile? It seems unlikely that we'll ever have apps, let alone in the next few years, but it's possible that small changes could be made to the website to improve mobile experience.
teacon7 (306 D)
29 Mar 15 UTC
ghug - no specific complaints, thanks for asking!
The only thing that consistently trips me up is that when trying to scroll between the chat box and the map, I tend to grab the chat box and scroll within THAT instead of the whole page. My fat fingers can't get the margins often enough. Perhaps an eensy bit wider non-chat-box margins for mobile users? It's really not that big a deal.

I wouldn't mind having push notifications (or a notification by sms/email), hence the app request. But honestly, the site works really well on my iPad, and i get to compulsively check games all day. Thanks for everything you do!

Could we get the ">>l" button on our profiles working? It would be nice to be able to look at our, or other player's early games, without having to go back one page at a time.

I very very much would like to receive notification banners when there is press in games I've been eliminated from and/or have finished completely. I know maybe not everyone does so maybe have it be toggle-able via settings (i.e. Opt-in)?
Caballo Blanco (1005 D)

I very very much would like to be able to remove games that I have been eliminated from (but are still active) from the "my games" list. Perhaps this could be a toggle option via settings also.
Also, I'm not going to formally ask for this again but just came across another counter argument for auto disbands. I think the best point that I liked was that in a real FTF game there is some sort of acknowledgement that yes you have to disband. However what if you earn a build (but have no where to build)? I suspect that in a FTF game there would be some sort of acknowledgement there but here there is none... The software realizes that you can't build so it does not give you the option to build. Therefore, I feel that is a counter point or precedence for not needing any acknowledgement from a player for an auto disband. Just my thought.

Small QOL improvement, can we have Joinable Games automatically default the search terms to Public? Sorry if it sounds trivial.

What would people think about the options to do secret draw votes? As in, a player votes draw, and all players have to vote yes or no. If one player votes no, the game continues.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
20 Apr 15 UTC
OH GOD THAT WOULD BE THE BEST.
Although I'm fine with it still being analog/continuous as long as it's secret. In F2F "calling a draw" distracts from the gameplay and take time out of the clock but it's part of the game and the TD can tell people who try to abusing calling a draw (if the rules don't limit it to once per game year) to shut the fuck up.

Discretely timed draws for web play, it would be non-obvious how to correctly implement it.

Even if we forget about gunboat, let's just talk FP WTA

The game would be much better without having proof-positive evidence who's voting for or against a draw. It allows you to actually lie about things, better approximates F2F, doesn't punish people who don't early-draw, doesn't allow it to be exploited so much in the lead (such as making super risky plays KNOWING that if they don't work out you can just toggle your draw on before anyone can react). As it stands if you're a weaker power holding back a leader, it's made proof-positive public to everyone if you take your draw vote down once the leader is somewhat stopped meaning, you know, you actually want to play for the win/spirit of the game now the threat's over.

It would be SO much better. So much.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

Valis: Not all FTF games have hidden draw votes. Some games have open draw votes - I think open draw votes are better at house games, for example.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
20 Apr 15 UTC
No very true. There is no one way to play F2F

However I can't say I've seen, heard, or imagined non-discrete draw votes in F2F.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
20 Apr 15 UTC
I think secret draw votes would be SO much better.
I think discrete draw votes would be slightly better, maybe, possibly.
Not mutually exclusive.
chluke (12292 D(G))

@ATC, I like the secret draw vote idea. It eliminates using the draw vote for diplomatic purposes, and I think it could push more games to solo efforts.

@Valis, what would be the difference between "secret" draw votes and "discrete" draw votes in web play?
dyager_nh (619 D)

I dont like the Yes/No aspect of a secret draw vote because people calling votes would be annoying.
However...having the current system but having it hidden would be pretty neat
thorfi (1023 D)
20 Apr 15 UTC
I like the idea of just keeping the existing draw system, except hiding the status of draw votes.

I like the idea of a no-press only "call for draw" button that simply broadcasts "someone has called for a draw". For other press I think we should leave it to players.

I like the idea of having a game start over if during the very first turn someone fails to put orders in
I continue to want elimination of the green dot and last login timestamp. I know jmo shot it down back on page three, but it's my #1 most desired feature so I will keep mentioning it periodically. All these other features (e.g. upcoming live games, secret draw, center-based draw) are in my opinion like George R.R. Martin working on Wild Cards action figures and Beauty & The Beast graphic novels: what I really want is for him to be working on The Winds of Winter, not this other crap. Not that I have any right to dictate what he or the devs choose to work on.
yassem (2533 D)

^Or at least an option to personally choose if you want the last-login time-stamp. Something like "hide" the fact that I'm being online (many sites have something like that)
Chumbles (791 D(S))
21 Apr 15 UTC
I'd love the capacity to be able to set an email reminder to be sent if I hadn't saved some orders an hour before the deadline. Not for myself, but more because games can be ruined by a missed move not only for the misser, but the other players too.
Yonni (136 D(S))

I'm 100% in THM's camp on this one. The only reason I don't play non-anon is because of the time stamp. And I'd much rather play non- anon otherwise.

I'm growing weary of all this draw button nonsense. Is there any chance we can introduce a simple system where you can vote for the draw by typing "/draw" into global?
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
21 Apr 15 UTC
I'm with THM. It is incredibly annoying to have people see when you are online or when you were online. Especially when they see that and believe that because I was online it was mandatory that I respond to their press. Sometimes you just don't have time to and it ends up ruining your game because they don't trust you're with them as your response comes 8 hours after when they believe they were entitled to a response.
Hazel-Rah (1262 D)

I dislike the timestamp/online indicator as well. It's officially a movement!
