Dear new users
This site is fun and cool! We are cool and friendly. Please hang out in this thread and post your questions - I will answer all of them and also tell jokes and interesting facts.

Webdip is my favorite website, I hope it will be yours too.

And now I deliver as promised:

Here is a joke:

A cannibal went for a walk and he passed his brother.

Two fish are in a tank. One looks to the other and says: "Hey, do you know how to drive this thing?"

Okay now some interesting facts. Guess what? The robot soccer team built the University of Texas at Austin (my school!!) has recently won the international robotic soccer tournament in Mexico City!!

http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/blog/creative/2012/06/ut-robots-win-robocup-2012.html

Now for some diplomacy content!

Guess what? Have you ever heard snotty veteran players prattling on about stalemate lines and wondered what the hell they were talking about? Here is a primer!

http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resources/strategy/stalemate.htm
http://devel.diplom.org/Online/StalematesAtoY/holcombe.htm

(I would like to take this opportunity to mention that I did not know the information contained in the above link for almost a year on this site)

An interesting news item: The citizens of the European principality of Liechtenstein have rejected a proposal to limit the powers of their prince - the most powerful monarch in Europe.

Okay newbies what you are seeing above is a reference to an inside joke on this forum - people will sometimes talk about people eating people alive in the Congo. We all know that this does not actually happen, but some shithead a long time ago once posted an inane thread about it, so now we talk about it all the time.

Also I study African history sometimes so people have now associated me with the Congo and the eating of people alive.

Now you know

hahahaha the fuck
SOME say that the original design for the game of Diplomacy included a THIRD unit type, "Cavalry". It was a unit that was designed to be twice as fast as a regular Army but to have only half the strength. One could be dislodged by a single Army. Alternatively, in the early game powers with such a unit could easily outflank enemies to apply extra pressure where needed. Warsaw, Smyrna, Vienna, and Paris were considered possible starting points for units of this kind, until the idea was nixed in a closed door meeting shortly before the board game's concept was unveiled. What are YOUR thoughts on this highly contentious matter?

I have a question, please, Thucydides. Recently, in one of my World Map games, I tried to convoy an army from Sanae IV to the Antarctic Peninsula. The interface would accept neither the "move" order for the army nor the "convoy" order for the fleet. I got an error message something along the lines of "Invalid TerrFromID=56" for one of the orders, and "Invalid TerrToID=62" for the other order.
Is this a bug? Or was there some way I could have worked around the problem?

I ended up placing inferior orders.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Jul 12 UTC
Seems like a bug, yes. I've never encountered that before. Might want to send the mods an email or make a thread about it to see if anyone else has seen that error.

Anyone seen an "invalid TerrFromID=n" before?
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Additionally, here are some crass jokes to cheer you up after those inferior orders:

A noob thread, huh? Good to see. I was positively impressed with you, Thucy (is it alright if I call you Thucy? ;-), mainly from your endless bickering with Putin. I have a hate hard-on for the actual Putin, so people who even choose to call themselves after that prick really get my goat, even if they're just being ironic or whatever.

Is this a good place to look for potential teachers? my game needs a lot of work, mainly in strategy and especially with diplomacy (With tactics I'm OK. Not good, but passable). I have a pretty good poker face when it comes to f2f games, but this sort of online play really limits these options for me, and my style often seem either too formal and stilted or too loose; this causes suspicions.

In short: if anyone is willing to be my mentor\welcome me into the loving embrace of webdip\buy me a beer, thank you and may your banners always fly in victory!

I'd offer to mentor you, H.H, but I'm awful at this game. I'm basically just here to fill a seat at tables with better players. :)

BUT. They do quasi-regularly offer "School of War" games where you're paired with a teacher who gives you advice. Look out for announcements of that variety.

Also, on the terrID thing, sometimes clearing your cookies helps, or it did when Oli told me to do it on vdip (a site with the same source code).

Bro of course I'll buy you beer.

Other than that H.H I would definitely recommend the School of War if you see it ever. I never got a chance to learn from it but everything I have seen is very impressive.

In the meantime yeah dude I'll mentor you. I'm not like a God of diplomacy or anything but I've been around the block a few times. I often play with new players anyway, so we could even play together.

@Thucy & H.H. Set up a game and I'll join. Maybe gather a few other n00bs and another experienced player or two who are willing to discuss their moves after the fact. We could have a serious debrief so the n00bs learn what we were thinking.

Anyone read him? His Strategy is a very good read and makes a lot of sense. I know people like Mearsheimer loathe him, but I think he has a lot to say, especially about having limited objectives, that can inform today's defense policies. I'd put him right up there with Jomini's Summary of the Art of War.

Why is King James' God So "Familiar" When He's...Not?
As I've said, I'm reading my way through the KJ Bible (KJ because you can't fully hope to ever be a Man of Letters like I hope to be someday without reading the Bible, like it or not, and the KJ version has had the biggest impact on English Literature) and it struck me partway through "Exodus"--OT, almighty, intimidating God speaks using "thou," but that'd be the INFORMAL version grammatically in James'/Shakespeare's day...but the OT God is anything BUT familiar and informal...?

So Help Me God...Naw--So Help Me WebDip Physicists, What's Higgs-Boson About?
Leaving that "God Particle" title alone--and if anyone brings God into THIS thread...shame on you, we have a debate coming up, for once, let's have a discussion sans the rhetoric, eh?--can any of our brilliant scientists here explain this? I've heard of it, and apparently it's important, but...what's it all mean, this particle...why would it hep give proof of...things? (Note my very technical jargon there.) ;)

Which subjects are sacred?
Zmaj raised an interesting point. We can slander and insult and wrestle and mock politics and religion without end, but as soon as someone starts in on personal histories and former cheating cases, it becomes very hush hush and people start tiptoeing around. Not that I disagree necessarily, but what makes personal history and former cheating cases et al. more taboo than politics and religion, the latter of which is supposedly deeply personal?
