Actually, though, please allow me to hijack this thread to suggest a great book that I think is an excellent read for everyone: The Unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose. It's about his semester at Liberty University as a secret atheist.

Well, it's nice to see that you expect people to read a 1,000 pages of tiny print, but won't even consider a 300 page book.

One of them is the holy, awe inspired Word of God. The other is mere literature at best.

Sure. I really think it's a great book and, as an atheist, gave me pause, which is always good. By no means is it straight-up liberal propaganda.

He was a sophomore at Brown when he decided to do his semester abroad at Liberty University (for those of you who don't know, it's the largest Christian University in the US). It's just a book about his adventures, and mostly about his surprise about how well he fit in with the other students (for as long as they thought he believed in god, at least). He was also one of the last people to interview Jerry Falwell before his death.

But, just as you don't like it when I compare jesus to harrison ford, I don't like people proclaiming that a must read the bible because it is the word of god. Could I have left this thread alone, sure, but this is not the type of bile on the forum I'm talking about and you know it. The forum will always have a bite to it and I don't care about that.

Man, abge, so sensitive. Where did he "demand" anything? He said he'd like you to read a book. And, without acknowleding other viewpoints? Do you do that every time you post something about science or your atheism? Every single post about evolution, do you say, "Of course, this is only one viewpoint, others may differ, and are equally valid." No, you don't. So, your post is pretty freaking unreasonable, I'd have to say.

I did skim the book you suggest once in a bookstore. It wasn't bad, pretty interesting.
