The most talented diplomats
I guess I'm not the only one who likes wandering sometimes between players' profiles, watching their percentage of losses/wins/draws etc. So, judging by this percentage, who are the most, like, talented diplomacy players you know? Or are you one of them?.

A Symbol of Strength or Rusted Over: How Do You Feel About The Iron Lady, Ms. Thatcher?
So I'll be seeing "The Iron Lady" soon enough--first, because it looks like a good film, and second, for PoliSci, with my PoliSci friends, because, hey, I'll be seeing the Leonardo DiCaprio "The Great Gatsby" and the new "Romeo and Juliet" with my English Lit. friends this year and hoping for the best, this is just what I do--and it strikes me now...I know her more in the abstract than in detail, so, for those who DO really know her--great leader, or terrible misstep?

What other games do you enjoy?
I just taught my 7-year old to play poker, and he beat me at his first hand of hold 'em tonight. (He had pocket queens and slow-bet me until I went all in.)

That story is really the only reason I started this thread, but I like a bunch of different board games as well - which ones do you like?

Settlers of Catan. Easily the most fun I've ever had playing a board game. Better than Diplomacy by far. (sorry guys!)

Settlers is great fun, but not a very balanced game. It's good for modern Euro-game training wheels, but play it enough times, and you realize it's not possible to come back from an initial deficit, which is a strike against it.

Have you played the Cities and Knights expansion for it, Frank?
Frank (100 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
Settlers of Catan is so perfectly designed. A great mix of luck and skill. Doesn't take long to play, no one gets eliminated, a lot of different strategies to play, the board is completely different every time.
Frank (100 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
I have not played Cities and Knights yet but would definitely like to. I actually have never played any other Euro-games; any recommendations?
What do you mean by not very balanced?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
10 Mar 12 UTC
@Frank,
The reasons you have for why SoC is such a great game are the same ones I would raise for the very opposite purpose: why Diplomacy is better.
A great mix of luck and skill? While there is always a luck aspect to every game, Diplomacy makes it more about your skills than the luck of the draw or toss if you will.
Doesn't take long to play? If anybody can play, it is probably not that great of a game.
NO ONE gets eliminated? What the hell kinda game is this? That takes the fun out of most competitive games.
A lot of different strategies to play? I just don't know how true that is for SoC...
The board is different every time? What, the damn board is different every time? What the hell.
Frank (100 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
I was sort of kidding about it being better than Diplomacy. I have played hundreds of games here and its the only game I've played online. I think in some ways Diplomacy is a more 'pure' strategy game. But Catan is just an incredibly really fun game to play in real life with friends.
Poozer (962 D)

I like SET and Settlers. Taboo is a fun party game.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
10 Mar 12 UTC
Catan's pluses: High replay-ability factor due to board being different every time. Low complexity/learning curve. Short enough game to play several times in an evening.

Minuses: It's almost impossible to come back to win if you fall behind early. (This is what I meant by "unbalanced," Frank.) Perhaps a bit too much reliance on dice rolling.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
10 Mar 12 UTC
Cities and Knights makes it more complex, and therefore more fun.

As to other recommendations, Frank, take a look at my bgg list (linked above).
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
10 Mar 12 UTC
I was just kidding around as well. As long as you enjoy the game, who cares what I or anyone else think? Having said that, don't repeat that sacrilegious nonsense again, you hear?
Frank (100 D)
10 Mar 12 UTC
Took a look at your list, MKE. Definitely a lot to explore, thanks!

I like how you have backgammon on there. I spent a year in the middle east and I must have played thousands of backgammon games while I was there. It is a really good game to play if you want to chat with people or watch tv at the same time. Kind of like euchre here in canada!

I've played a decent amount of Settler's- it is a great game for casual gamers. I think I enjoy having 6 players playing more though as it mixes things up a bit, keeps it interesting as I was starting to get pretty bored with it.

Recently, I have been playing Small World as a casual game. It's not bad either.

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22545/glenn-drovers-empires-the-age-of-discovery

Age of Empires III though is a really fun game that younger/casual players can play. Takes some figuring out as the rule book is not as clear as it could be. However, I found it to be rather fun and enjoy that it is a game that can be won with a number of distinct strategies.

I've heard good things about Agricola (Vaft) and Puerto Rico (MKE)- hope to get a chance to play them sometime.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)

Agricola is just so much fun, it's enjoyable anywhere between 2-5 players and you can play it dozens of time without it being boring.

Favorite for the combination of strategy and negotiation: Diplomacy
For pure strategy and intuition: Go (weiqi)
For tactics: Chess
For psychology: Poker
For complex war simulation: Axis and Allies
For strategy and tactics with real time decision-making: Starcraft II
Just for fun: Settlers of Catan (and Cities and Knights makes the game much broader)
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

I play Settlers of Catan online at catan.com. My screen name is ninjaj. Anyone interested in playing me sometime can look me up.

I also play-tested The Game of Thrones (called A Song of Fire and Ice--dunno if it's what's on the shelf or not, but the designers told me that my name would be in the back of the rulebook).
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
10 Mar 12 UTC
btw, if anyone has a copy of the Game of Thrones, I'd love it if someone looked up the playtesters to see if my name was actually in there.

Board Games: Diplomacy, RISK!, Settlers of Catan, Rail Baron, Axis & Allies
Card Games: Hold'Em, Blackjack, Bridge (any card-counting games), Magic (FUCK YOU, GEO)
Computer Games: League of Legends, Killing Floor, Sins of a Solar Empire, Skyrim
"Sports": Horseshoes, Bowling, Frisbee
Oodles of games, too many to name. Most recently, I'd say I'm mostly playing Settlers, Magic, Bridge, Bananagrams, Trails to Rails, and Talisman. Agricola and Puerto Rico are sitting on my shelf but I've never gotten around to learning them.

Diplomacy software?
Does anyone know a Diplomacy software where you can validate if a specific move you're about to make in a game will succeed or not?

If one of you has the software, can you please post me the link here? Thanks!
