America, land of the free, home of the brave
There seems to be a general consensus here that america is for the most part, a force of (for the objectivists) "good" in this world. That it spreads freedom and democracy all over the world at great risk to itself.
WELL....

Starting Monday, October 3rd, until Sunday, October 9th, I will be away without access to a computer. During that time, I will need someone to play for me in 4 games.

I apologize if this is against the rules here, it is standard practice on other sites. I looked at the rules here and could not find anything about it.

Putin 2012!
That's right, the world's most beloved dictator is running for President again! We are taking bets on who will win the race. The current odds of Putin winning are 1/1

It actually is really sad, personally, that this man has had control over the country for what, 12 years now? And now he's going to continue on as hegemonic dictator. I wish the voters of russia would urge Medvedev to run against him. I prefer him to Putin by a wide margin.

I'm surprised the odds are that favourable! If a legitimate betshop was putting those odds on I would bet my whole current bank account on it.
lol you'd just get you're whole bank account back plus .005% or so. To be frank I just made up the odds, because I believe the Russian electoral system is very corrupt
Invictus (240 D)
25 Sep 11 UTC
The voters of Russia don't matter, that's the tragedy. Putin will carry on destroying the rule of law and electoral democracy till 2024 when his second consecutive 6 year term runs out and there's nothing anyone can do to stop him. The guy cheated in 2004 when he actually was wildly popular and was guaranteed a win, there's no way he'd allow himself to lose any election ever.
I do hope Medvedev stops being his lackey. He has real potential in Russia and in the global community if only he stood up to Putin.
Also, I'm waiting for our Putin to hop on this thread haha
Invictus (240 D)
25 Sep 11 UTC
The terms were also just increased to 6 years during Medvedev's seat-warming tenure. It's a disgrace. After everything they've had to suffer through the Russian people deserve better.

"lol you'd just get you're whole bank account back plus .005% or so."

I'm not sure where you get those percentages from - unless the joke is that the odds are a Russian scam? :)
If the odds are 1/1 then you put £1 and get another £1 back, meaning you then have £2. So if I bet my bank account of say £2,000, then I would double my money to £4,000.
Invictus (240 D)
25 Sep 11 UTC
Medvedev is nothing but a lackey, goldfinger0303. How could he ever hope to challenge Putin? He has no base of support outside of the United Russia party and its coalition, which is totally beholden to Putin. It would be like Cheney running against George Bush. It cannot happen.
spyman (424 D(G))
25 Sep 11 UTC
I thought 1/1 bet just meant you get your money back, with no net gain.
lol Invictus, I think Cheney would be more like Putin than dubya. I'm aware that he's currently nothing but a lackey, but I keep hoping he'll challenge Putin, because they were making contrary remarks last winter

@Sargmacher - those are 2-1 odds you're thinking about.

@Spyman - well, I went to the horsetrack a month ago and bet $2.00 for win on a horse with 1-1 odds, and got like $2.05 back, so that's why I said that
Sargmacher (0 DX)

"I thought 1/1 bet just meant you get your money back, with no net gain."

@Spyman: That's ridiculous - then why place a bet at all? That's stupid.

@goldfinger: No, those are not the odds I'm thinking about. Check it yourself http://www.free-bet-calculator.co.uk/

I shall run against you, Putin!

Forget the 1/1 odds...

If Bush can get elected and lose on paper, than so can I!

And I've got one up on Bush...

I actually speak English, you see, rather than "Amerikhun!" ;)

Now I just need a VP to balance the ticket...volunteers? (Chances are I'll be assasinated quickly, so it's a short trip to the seat of power!)
hmmm, that's interesting. I should've won a lot more at the horsetrack if that were the case haha

Horserace betting comes in different forms. It might have been an "each-way" bet which means that you would have won money if the horse came, typically, in the first four positions but this type of bet slashes your odds percentage slightly.
spyman (424 D(G))

Of course it's ridiculous Sarg, that's why bookmakers don't offer 1/1odds.
Invictus (240 D)

Who's who isn't important. The important part is that they represent the same interests and constituencies.
spyman (424 D(G))

... nobody bothers to offer odds on an absolutely sure thing, which is what 1/1 means. Lol.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
25 Sep 11 UTC
Working out odds is generally pretty easy to work out.
Just think of it as something to a certain number.
So '10-1' means you get £10 for every £1 you bet, if you win that is.
So, '2-1', means you get £2 for every £1 you bet. So if you bet £1 and you win at '2-1' then you win £2 and get your original £1 bet, meaning you now have £3.

'1-1' odds mean you win £1 if you bet £1, giving you £2 total if you win.
1-1 odds would not mean you "get your money back", otherwise no would ever bet on 1-1 odds - it's just a ridiculous idea. Who would gamble their hard-earned money only on the offer that they can win the same money back? That's all risk and no gain.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
25 Sep 11 UTC
But spyman, lol, that's not what you said. You said, I quote: "I thought 1/1 bet just meant you get your money back, with no net gain." THAT is stupid.
"Medvedev's advisers were clearly disappointed that he would not have another term in the Kremlin to try to continue pursuing reforms and bristled at political maneuverings."

That's from the article on msn.com. I don't know, its teasers like that which give me hope that there could be a political opposition

"@Spyman - well, I went to the horsetrack a month ago and bet $2.00 for win on a horse with 1-1 odds, and got like $2.05 back, so that's why I said that"

Interesting. Well I don't gamble so I don't really know.
"This filthy deal of the country's supreme authorities is a blow to the institution of the presidency," Kremlin-connected analyst Gleb Pavlovsky told the radio station.

Again, teasers. Oh well, another great decade of Russian-American relations to look forward to :/

"Well I don't gamble so I don't really know."

Exactly. Then maybe you shut up about it because statements like the ones above, including your comment that "bookmakers don't offer 1/1odds" is rubbish. 1-1 odds are common.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
25 Sep 11 UTC
Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread into a discussion about bookies and how to work odds.

Another Putin term will do nothing positive for ordinary Russians and only keep them isolated from Europe and the rest of the world.
Invictus (240 D)
25 Sep 11 UTC
There is opposition, but it won't come from Medvedev. He's a creature of Putin. The opposition also will not be allowed to win.

Chillax Sarg :-)
You are dead right.
From Wikipedia:
[edit]Fractional odds
Favoured by bookmakers in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and also common in horse racing, fractional odds quote the net total that will be paid out to the bettor, should he win, relative to his stake. Odds of 4/1 ("four-to-one" or less commonly "four-to-one against") would imply that the bettor stands to make a £400 profit on a £100 stake. If the odds are 1/4 (read "one-to-four", or "four-to-one on"), the bettor will make £25 on a £100 stake. Should he win, the bettor always receives his original stake back, so if the odds are 4/1 you would actually receive a total of £500 in return (£400 plus the original £100). Odds of 1/1 are known as evens or even money.
Not all fractional odds are traditionally read using the lowest common denominator. Perhaps most unusual is that odds of 10/3 are read as "one-hundred-to-thirty".
Fractional odds are also known as British odds, UK odds or in that country, traditional odds.

I know I'm right on this, you don't need to go quoting Wiki and I'm not sure why you did. The discussion doesn't need to keep going on that.
spyman (424 D(G))

You are rude.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
25 Sep 11 UTC
I wasn't trying to be, sorry. But you were talking rubbish and then putting "Lol" as if I was stupid. I already explained to goldfinger what it meant and he was fine with that and the thread continued talking about Putin. You were the one that kept it going and then started quoting paragraphs from Wiki unnecessarily. Strange behaviour.

If You HAD To Choose A GOP Nominee From The Debate...Who'd It Be?
Well, I just finished watching the GOP Debate (not all of it, missed the first third or so coming home from college) and my question is this:

I personally would NOT, as of yet, vote for ANY of the GOP nominees...but you had to choose someone, right now, after this last debate--who, and why? (And TETTLETON'S CHEW...YOU ARE FORMALLY INVITED IN...)
