Wonderful World of Warfare: A WorldDip game for talkers.
Hello everyone! I just created a world game in hopes that we can get a fun, clean game together. The meek and anti-social need not apply.

See ya on the battlefield!

Off-topic: Browser Game
I've been playing a little browser game that lets you built up a squad of soldiers and customize them in order for them to fight automatically against other opponents.
It's quite nifty overall if you get into it and only take a couple of minutes each day.

Credibility issues after stabbing
Hey everyone,
I had a little issue I was curious about on stabbing: is that really the path to winning this game? I always find it a waste of good faith-building in an alliance to resort to simple terrain nicking at some point when you have so many more options (see follow up):

People missing orders
Argh! The first two games I play on here, two powers failed to submit Spring 1901 orders, which really fucks things up. :( I wish there was some sort of penalty for this or that webdiplomacy would send emails when a game starts and when you have orders due...

When powers CD in the first year (especially Spring) it is best to vote for a cancel and encourage others to do so as well.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
30 Aug 11 UTC
I don't think having emails sent would help. I think most orders that are missed are missed due to apathy or quiting, not just forgetting to submit orders on time.

Some of the people never logged on between when the game started and when orders were due, so I suspect they just didn't realized a game had started.

As you get to play better skilled opponents, this will happen less and less (or so I'm told). Just smile and nod where you are now, and remember in the long run it plays to the advantage of those who show up (if not this game, then maybe the next)
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
30 Aug 11 UTC
Yes, its possible. There is confusion among new players. Also some quit if they don't like the game. Just hang in there, and you will get into games with better players soon enough.

Not only did Yellowjacket beat me to the punch, he said what I wanted to much better than I did.

Hehe all of my games have been marred by CD's and missed turns. The first 2 in my favor, the last one totally screwed everything for me.

Do not join random games. Advertise a high quality game in the forum. Also, look at peoples resign rate in their profile before playing with them. You'll have a much better experience.

You're going to have CDs and idiots at the lower skill levels. There's a reason that these people only have 100 D... anybody who shows up to their games generally will net points over the long haul if they play at all competently... so don't sweat it, and take advantage of the free points for now.

I would like to welcome some of the newer players here, since I am not currently in any game (very soon dead in my last one)

so if newcomers are serious and engage here in the forum, we could start a game. I have yet to play with some of you new guys, who tend to be active a lot in here :)

I got a busy week coming, so I was thinking to start a game in a weeks time or so - let me know who of you are interested.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

I, for one, have a policy that I won't cancel a game once it has started unless there's a need by one of the players. If people CD in the early stages of the game or at critical junctures (not merely when they're basically dead and are giving up), I will talk to the remaining players and eliminate the CD'd players and draw the game. I believe that if you CD a country (not merely NMR because these things can happen) that you don't deserve to have your points refunded and you should have the CD mark on your record as a resign. That's all a cancel does. It refunds your points without displaying that you resigned in a game.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
30 Aug 11 UTC
Is there proper etiquette for canceling a game? For example, a recent game of mine featured an English CD. As France, I was fine with it, and it was helping me out a lot, but everyone else was screaming "Cancel! Attack France if he doesn't cancel!"

Granted, I'm all for a cancel if a CD is helping out an enemy :)
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Aug 11 UTC
Hmmm... I wonder if we could change the behavior of cancel to *not* give anyone who CDs their money back. Of course, I also hate that the CD gets removed from the quitters record when another player takes over the nation.

@2nd, yeah that's nice but I still vote cancel there. 1st turn NMR, into a CD really ruins the dynamic of the game for me. It takes away the feeling that you earned anything, instead it's more like it was given to you
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
30 Aug 11 UTC
there's no "etiquette" 2ndwhiteline, (despite what some "elite" players will tell you). You are under no obligation to draw or cancel if some jerkwad doesn't show up.

Now, if you do play in games with experienced players, they will form a draw alliance against you (as is only fair) so you're better off wiping the CD and calling a draw at that point. But in noobland? Screw it, take the easy money.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
30 Aug 11 UTC
I like how you put it Yellowj. And yeah, I think it completely ruins the game, even if I'm the one that benefits.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Aug 11 UTC
@YJ - Sure there is an etiquette. Doesn't mean you have to abide by it. Eitquette doesn't mean an inviolate rule. It just eans an accepted norm. The accepted norm is there, you and others just choose (as is your right) to ignore it.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

I like how Draugnar has to explain the definition and/or usage of etiquette to people. :)
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Aug 11 UTC
Well, he said there was no etiquette, when clearly there is. He is just free to ignore it, as we all are.
SacredDigits (102 D)
30 Aug 11 UTC
There's a number of experienced players who feel that it all evens out eventually, so you might as well play out the CD games.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Aug 11 UTC
How can having the fun of the game ruinde balan ce out? Whether it be you got put at a disadvatage and felt abused, or you got an advatage and felt you didn't earn it, it still destroyed the fun of the game and that can never be balanced out by another CD, only made worse by one.
SacredDigits (102 D)
30 Aug 11 UTC
Hey, I don't advocate it, but some people say it.
SGrabowski (547 D)
30 Aug 11 UTC
"Etiquette" would say that it is wrong to tell someone you will do one thing and then do something completely opposite. It's called lying. And it's an integral part of this game.

Also, since this game is somewhat based off of the reality of RL diplomacy/war, think of it this way - does a battle fail to commence if one of the armies that was supposed to be there didn't get the orders to move? No. Wars are fought, won, and lost all the time on the basis of lapses in communication, mistaken orders, poor intelligence (or good intelligence), and any number of other reasons. Do you think we should go back to D-Day and inform the elite Panzer unit on the Channel that Hitler would really like them to join in with defending the beaches of Normandy from the Allied invasion? After all, "etiquette" would dictate that pretending that Patton was building up a huge invasion force when in actuality he was just a decoy is wrong. This is WAR. In a war, you take whatever advantages you can get and use them to their best advantage so you can win!
pjmansfield99 (100 D)

@ Per Olander - depending on when you set it for, I'd be interested. Newbie to the site but no CD's at all (yet!)
SGrabowski (547 D)
30 Aug 11 UTC
I've had several games where someone CD'd to another players advantage (and therefore my own disadvantage) and people did not cancel or draw. It still takes effort to defeat someone who CDs - there are games I've played where England or Turkey has CDd in the mid game and by the time everyone else had played to a draw, there was still one or two SCs left of those countries, even though they had resigned and no one had taken them over.

Really sorry about the delay with game three. It will happen as soon as we figure out the technical issue with replacing this one player. I think we're going to forgo the 4th game (round 2 only has 3 anyway), that way the first leg will be done by end-June, leaving July for the second leg and August for the finals.

Ok, this may sound dumb, but I can't figure it out. Does central America on the world board have a panama canal? It doesn't have a costal designation so is it possible to move from the east side of south America to the west side through there?

200001: A Past Legacy
Every human life on Earth, tomorrow, suddenly vanishes. Mankind is gone for good. But you learn that by the year 200001, either the Apes will rise, or space aliens will come along...SOMEONE will populate Earth once more, and wonder who used to live here. You build a Mt. Mankind: 10 Heads of anyone who's ever lived, and one relic/piece of work of theirs to tell the future who humans were. Who, and what, do you choose?

Idea for a new betting system: % instead of # of points
I'd like to suggest a new option in which the required bet for a game is an equal percentage of a player's total points (including those in play) instead of a set number of points. In practice, the relative investment for all players would be more equal and could encourage underdogs to take on the richest players on the site.
