School Of War: Winter 2011 Semester
So, reading some random threads, I've noticed people sporadically bringing up the School of War series. I'm creating this thread to see if there is enough interest, maybe we can set up a new semester's worth of games after the winter holidays... share your thoughts, indicate your interest, or volunteer your veteran services below

The thing is - I personally don't have the time to run the entire thing... but I did write up 3 or so explanatory posts a while back, and we had a blog dedicated to this effort. Maybe over the weekend, I'll go dig them up from archived threads (if anyone else wants to do this, go for it).

But before we get into that... lets see how much interest there is... if you are interested... write your comments, but please also copy the list below, add your name to the appropriate list, and paste it into your response:

use this format:
GhostRating - Name

First Group: Analysts (Veteran players who commit to two comments per game year)
004 - Babak

Second Group: Professors (Veteran players who will play in the games and provide in-game advice)

Third Group: Mentors (Veteran players who provide private PM council or mentorship to the novices in the games)

Fourth Group: Students (Novice players, or those seeking mentorship and advice)

Note, there will be standards for inclusion (reliability, rank, experience etc), so indicate your interest here first and foremost, we'll decide on how many games and who gets in later.

Also - since my job really limits my ability to expend time on the day-to-day operations, the School is also hiring a Dean, so if you feel qualified and are interested in helping run the Winter Semester, please PM me or post here...

so... I guess we'll find out if there is enough interest or if this thread drops off the forum

Note: How do I find my GhostRating?

I always find this series really interesting, even without ever really participating. And I have learned a lot only reading the commentaries and looking the games, so I think I could give some help on this as analyst or mentors if you think I qualify (I don´t think I have enough time to commit as professor).

My ghost rating has dropped due to bad play in the leagues, so I don't know if I could do anything but comment or mentor. I'd prefer to mentor, as commenting on the weekends is tough for me...

I'd also like to apply for the Dean's position. My qualifications:
1. Top 100 GR and rising, no CDs, and I don't think any NMRs either
2. GMd over 100 games on BOUNCED, so I have some experience with managing players and game situations.
3. Ran a similar concept on BOUNCED, with 7 experienced (scarily good) players battling it out and providing me with commentary every movement phase, which I then posted to another, paused, game that served as a discussion board.

I'm interested as a student. I can't find my user name in the Ghost rating list. It may be that when loging on from work I have to use a old internet browser that doesn't fully support google docs and I can only see the first 2614 raitings.

low - joey1
I don't know if my ghost rating is high enough or if I have enough experience, but I'd be willing to be in group 2.

I'd be down for being a Mentor. Just curious though, how do the professors work? Do they give advice on the global chat? Or in private communication when asked?

As always, Babak, I'll offer to participate in whatever form is most useful. As my GR is languishing at 413 last time I looked, I think I might need to re-enrol.

Babak,

Thanks for trying to get this off the ground. I've never participated, but I've always loved reading what people have to say.

If you think I qualify, I'm willing to volunteer for up to 3 games as a professor or mentor, or some combination of both.

GR-59
Baskineli (100 D(B))

I don't know how to rate myself. On one hand, my GR is 122, which is not too bad. On the other hand, there are atleast 121 players that are better than me...

I don't think I'd like to be a student, but I am not sure I am qualified enough to be a mentor/professor/analyst.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
10 Dec 10 UTC
@drano

My understanding of Professor was that they were there to give new players a taste of how more experienced players play the game. An opportunity they may not otherwise have because of how experienced players are often hesitant to join games with new players.

@Bask

I'm sure GR is not the only factor in determining positions.
Babak (26982 D(B))
10 Dec 10 UTC
thanks all for comments. I will come back later tonight to do a round up/clean up etc...

peterwiggins - you seem eminently qualified... I'll PM you later to further discuss.

if anyone else also wants to apply for Dean, we certainly could use more help - and you can double as a professor or mentor too.

lastly - if anyone does have an extra 20-30 minutes on their hand and would be willing to dig up the links to the previous SoW games, SoW EOG threads, or SoW Game starts, please help out. Many of those links can continue to be useful even if some of our webdippers are not interested in joining the games.

just to get this straight, it is basically a group of games, but we have pro's who help out the novices in their games? or do the pro's just give advice afterward?
anywho, I would like to sign up as a novice.
I really only play recreationaly, and so do not compete in these high-strung tournaments nor have a ghost rating. but i would love to learn some tips from the pro's and better my game.
in conclusion, sign me up

Ignoring the Franco-Prussian War are we?
I mean really it's Chapter One of the modern Franco-Prussian conflict that lead to WWI & WWII. It's also the only one that the Germans won. Alsace Loraine wasn't a big issue until the Germans took it in that war.

THIS Is Why I Am Disillusioned About Democracy As It Is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Tucson_shooting
That's despicable. I don't care if you're a Red or a Blue or a Green or Libertarian or Communist or Facist, if you support gay marriage or not, abortion or not, if you like Obama or not, Palin or not--Plato, ultimately, was right, is right: either you have a dictatorship or a corrupted democracy. Pick your poison. Our political system, now, IS poisoned...and must be changed, this CANNOT HAPPEN...

Crazy Anglican, just curious....
Hey Crazy Anglican, does your grandmother go by the name: "Swedish Mountains"? My grandpa used to bang out this swedish girl near Chicago just after the Korean War. He said she spoke in a 1/2 swedish accent n was worlds of fun, in alll seriousness. Just askin.

How much effort do you put into thinking about your moves?
Ivo_Ivanov said recently that he usually plays around eight games a time. I find this amazing considering how well he does in his games.
The only games I have ever won, I have worked really hard at. I have set up positions using jDip and played through every scenario I can think of. But this is quite time consuming. Lately I have become very slack, indeed I might as well play live games. How hard do you try?

Seem to be having a bug ordering a convoy.
Hello,
I am ordering a convoy in a game. I fill in the first two boxes, and then try to fill in the third box (where to convoy from).
The browser seems to pause for a few long seconds, then I get a message saying that a script is having a problem. This happens on 4 different browsers that I've tried on 3 different operating systems.
Does anybody have the same problem? What should I do about this?
