I am New
I am new to diplomacy and this site, but I've read some stuff on the net. I want to know from experienced players, how much backstabbing and what amount goes on in games played here, and what is socially acceptable and what isn't as I figure out how to play this.

Presumably he took almost as long to do so as you are in formulating your theory?

;)
I believe that God caused the Big Bang 14 billion years ago, and also was responsible for evolution, performing each step of evolution, which is what Genesis describes. The humans that started appearing 50,000 years ago did not have the Spirit of God breathed into him, and were not sentient. But 6,000 Years ago, God created Adam and Eve out of dirt, and gave them His Spirit, so they were sentient. The unsentient humans either then died of or merged with the sentient humans.

This is still possible even with a literal interpretation of Genesis because the word day in Genesis is a translation of the Hebrew word Yom, which can also mean an era. This is why I also believe that we are still in the seventh "day". It is actually an era. Especially since God never said that there was morning and evening on the seventh day, which he did do for the other six days.

It's a nice try, but why so much trouble to follow the Biblical account literally?
Thucydides (864 D(B))

What about how land plants are created the days before sea creatues, whereas in evolutionary thought land creatures arose from the sea?

And how birds were created on the same day as sea creatures, and then followed by land creatures the next day although birds were thought to have arisen from land animals?
Thucydides (864 D(B))

The unsentient human thing is an interesting idea, given that it conveniently explains how Cain and Abel had kids without incest.

But I don't necessarily think "unsentient" is the right way to go. Maybe more like "not God's special favorites"

You know, all those "other tribes" that were always on the other side of the hill.

@ CM

I always interpreted it as Adam and Eve only became sentient after eating the forbidden fruit. Before then they spoke the language of animals and were naked like animals (essentially no different from apes). It also ties in loosely with theories about human brain development increasing dramatically alongside a change of diet. I'd be less inclined to stick to the dates the bible uses however. I dare say when it was written people cared too much about of time greater than a few 100 years, and 1000 years would have the same meaning as 100,000 years to them.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Jul 10 UTC
If I read your site right CM, everything before the fall was vegetarian.

What about, you know, the carnivorous stuff.
Octavious (2701 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
The forbidden fruit could well have been meat. Indeed, eating meat would have been a huge boost to the development of a protein hungry brain.

See, I face a bit of a dilemma here.

Part of me wants to dismiss you as just another idiotic troll, and part of me thinks you're serious.

Now, you can believe whatever you want to believe, but I could sit here for hours debunking any 'fact' you want to throw at me that uses the bible as a primary source.

But I will not, because you either are:

A) a troll looking to generate controversy
B) sincere, but fixed on your goal of somehow 'proving' that something that is ultimately rooted in faith can be demonstrated scientifically.

In either case, I'd be wasting my time, as you'd just move on to the next thesis after I demolish this one.

So, instead of dreaming up oddball theories that can't stand up to rigorous analysis, why not take comfort from your faith and stop posting stuff that probably makes 95% of those who are People of the Book cringe? You're certainly not going to convert any nonbelievers with what you're posting...

I think Ursa's question is highly pertinent. Why are you trying to shoe-horn modern knowledge into a shape that allows you to still believe that the Bible is the literal word of God? Why not just look deeper and admit that your faith is faltering, and you can no longer reconcile your experiences in the real world with the outdated religious teachings you have followed all your life?
Thucydides (864 D(B))

What "tree" would meat grow on?

Also like I said how can you deny the evidence of so many carnivores who lived and ate meat prior to the fall??
Octavious (2701 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
@ thucy

Quite obviously meat doesn't grow on trees. Have you been drinking? :p
@Stratagos: Although this is what I personally believe, the reason I'm posting on here is to show how God and science can get along.

@Jamiet: How is this not true to the literal word of God and to science? There is nothing in this theory that contradicts scientific evidence, or God's word.

@Thucy: Where does it say there weren't carnivores befor the fall?

Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Jul 10 UTC
@CM - the shear fact that there were carniverous dinosaurs before man came along means there were carnivores before the fall.

Accept that the creation story is just that: a story. It was given to a very primitive man by today's standards so they'd have something to grasp and would make them feel they were special, but it is just a story just as Noah's ark is a story. The flooding was localized and the "every creature two by two) was just those animals Noah knew about from the localized region. Maybe God intervened and kept the animals that nromally would fight at peace. I can handle that. But the flood was not all inclusive and there weren't lions and bears and tigers and giraffes and elephants and...

While I agree that Science and Religion can get along (mostly by ignoring each other) I don't think that trying to argue that the Bible is a primordial description of modern scientific knowledge will get you any traction.

+1 Osama

One of my friends IRL told me that he believes that God created the Universe (via Big Bang), and then He's ignoring us for the rest of eternity.

That would explain a lot.
@Draug - I do realize that the flood was regional.

@dave bishop - Read my link. The sun moon and stars were not created after plants and animals. The Earth was covered by clouds and other junk in the air at that time (I think science also said this), and God made that junk go away to reveal the sun, moon and stars.

@Obama Bin Laden - The Christian/Jewish God, as the Bible accurately describes how science says the universe was created.

@CM
Even if what you say is true, plants could still not survive without seeing the sun and receiving its light.

Also, if you read the original passage, saying that it suggests the earth was covered with smog which was then removed is clearly not the intention of the writer. Its really outrageous to try and twist its meaning to that extent, I'm surprised that isn't self evident.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

The Universe may have been created 1 second ago exactly as is, with all our memories and dinosaur bones preloaded, including this very post of mine.

But ultimately it doesn't matter. Neither does whether God caused the Big Bang or not for the same reasons. We have what we have and we go from here.

svenson (101 D)

just putting in my 2 cents about my beliefs. I was raised catholic, then switched to atheism and now consider myself agnostic.

If there is a God, which I haven't dismissed the possibility of, and if he has all these rules about how we should worship him, and how we should live our lives including what we should eat/wear/not do etc. why should I worship him?

Is it not enough to just be a good person with good morals? Why should I go to church every Sunday? Why should I make the woman in my culture only show their eyes? Why should I not eat meat at certain times? Why should I not eat pork? Why should I not drink alcohol? Why should I not be able to love another of the same sex? (I'm not gay) Why should I do/don't do a large number of other things?

I'd rather burn in any kind of hell as described by any religion than follow a God who has stupid bullshit rules like that.

My question is who has the best name on the site? Why? Or, why not?

How to deal with too many games...
I can't seem to understand how, but I've gone and gotten myself into 8 'long' phase games of more than 24 hours each. 3 of these are 'talking' games. 2 of these are thematic talking games. 3 of these are >100 point bet games.

I'm so screwed. Any advice?
