New Variant Question:
I just started a Ancient Med variant and we just finished our first year. But something seems odd about the map, it looks like it is giving people all of the territories that they occupied in Spring as well (not SC's but territories).

Speedy gunboat game, anyone?
Anybody interested in a five-minute-turn anonymous gunboat game? There was one that just flopped but I'd really like to give it a go.

In addition to Draw, Pause, and Cancel, can we please have a little order button that says something like Finalize your Damn Moves, This is a Gunboat Game and You Have No Reason to Not Finalize! ? I think it'd really improve the game for everyone.

Should I be concerned?
I'm in a game that's in 1903 where neither England, France, or Germany have attacked each other. All three are also in another game together. Is this cause for suspicion for Meta-Gaming? Has anyone else seen this before? Here's the link:

Star Trek 2012- Four Old Captains Want In!
Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, and Scott Bakula ALL have said they'd like a role in Trek 12. Who would you like to see- Shatner Kirk come back, Stewart's Picard come back from Nero's time to save Data/Kirk, Mulgrew's Janeway... uh... or Bakula's Archer look confused some more? ;) ("I hate Trek 11!" comments NOT welcome... have fun, folks!)

Is this cheating?
If 2 or more people know each and join a non-anon game is it considered cheating for them to work together until all the other players are destroyed and then draw the game?
Is it just lame or cheating?

Improving the World-Map
I'd like to make a more balanced World-map, so I'm asking here what to change on the current map. I'll apply all the changes to the map and we can get some test-games on my server to improve the map even more.
So post your suggestions.

Because Thucydides would rather talk about Jersey Shore... I have moved the discussion here.

I personally think that Italians are the weak mutant offspring of Rome.

For the record, last time I checked we were ahead in the medal count 22-8 over the Canadians haha!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
But the one that counts is the crown jewel of the games... and the only one I (and a lot of folks watch):

Hockey.

The Olympic Hockey is arguably even bigger than the Stanley Cup... think about it, hockey's biggest moment IS "Do you believe in miracles....? YES!!!"

That's the one moment EVERYONE remembers from the Winter Games and hockey...

USA!

I'm not really as uber nationalistic as some of the Americans here, but no one really likes seeing their country slammer. We Canadians will redeem ourselves when we whoop the Americans in hockey today. Nothing gives Canadians more pleasure than beating Americans :P
jimgov (219 D(B))
21 Feb 10 UTC
By the look of the medal count, you Canadians don't get much pleasure :)
@Obi,
". think about it, hockey's biggest moment IS "Do you believe in miracles....? YES!!!"

I don't know whether that's hockeys biggest moment. Maybe in the US, and maybe only for a generation of people who watched, and more because of the cold war thing than because of hockey. And because of the movie...

And come to think of it, I bet if you polled NON-hockey fans, and asked them what that game signified, they will tell you that was when the US beat Russia for the gold medal, which is not even correct.
KaptinKool (408 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
With the Canadian roster this year, I wouldn't be surprised at a Canada/Russia final... bring back the old days when we used to do that.
Katpin,
Are you sure on your history? Can you tell me the last time there was a Canada/Russia final?
There was ONCE that happened.

not a huge hockey fan but i will be watching and rooting for my country GO USA!!!

and just a tidbit for all you miracle on Ice fans- I know Mark Johnson the man who scored the tying and arguably the most important goal in USA Hockey history- He's a great man and s leading the US womens team to a medal for sure.
KaptinKool (408 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
@DingleberryJones - I am very sure on my history. I wasn't referring to olympic hockey, rather a much larger event (at the time) which was known as the Summit Series (one in 1972 and one in 1974).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summit_Series
http://www.angelfire.com/tv2/rainbowcountry/canadarussia.html

In conclusion Go Canada Go!!!
KaptinKool (408 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
It was a Canada v. USSR event only.
Centurian (3257 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
Wow Americans. You guys have more medals than a country less than a tenth your size. Bravo. Good job. This is why nobody likes you.

Canada is the clear favourite to win hockey.

Dingle, Olympic hockey has only been relevent recently because pro players are allowed in. Before the communist states could send "amateurs" and dominate. So before the rules change, the summit series was the big international event, and it was between Russia and Canada.

Canada wins hands down too much skill for Americans to handle. And king Brodeur stones any attack you may muster.
Womens team also wins in final against yanks.
KaptinKool (408 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
I doubt Brodeur will be starting (though he is my favorite goaltender). They will give Luongo the full starter position.
wydend (0 DX)
21 Feb 10 UTC
I'm rooting for USA, but don't have much hope for victory. Canada is just too talented and too deep on their roster. I hope for a Canada/Sweden final. That would be a pretty good game.
podium (498 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
Sources say it will be Brodeur best goalie ever and shines the best in the big games.
akilies (861 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
also this game doesn't matter to much cause it is not an elimination game, it is for first round byes though.

@centurian- there are many more reasons why people don't like the US, and there are a lot of reasons why I(an american) don't like the US.
abernat (161 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
USA! USA! USA! Can't wait to beat up on the 51st state tonight. I know it's not part of the medal chase, but it still would be nice for the US to try and catch a W against that loaded Canadian team.

I'll have to shelve my Sid jersey tonight and root on Brooks.
abernat (161 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
Also, I know it's be advertisted as 7:00 EST start time (at least here in the States on NBC), but I'm pretty sure that is when the TV coverage will start. I don't think the puck is dropping until 7:40. I hate when they pull that garbage to get you to watch promos and advertisements for a half hour.
jimgov (219 D(B))
21 Feb 10 UTC
@centurian - Three words. "Own the podium" Canada put an additional $113 million to, as they described it, "Place first in the total medal count at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games." How's that coming along?
denis (864 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
Ahh, (sigh) anyone who thinks that USA stands a chance against the Canadians isn't right up in the brain. The Canadian Line up is way to deep and against the USA goaltending it will be like a pack of wolves against a herd of dumb founded sheep.

Now Canada-Russia final now that's something. Unlike the US Russia has a wall of goaltending, aka Nabokov and Bryzgalov. And with the weekness Canada showed in scoring against the Swiss' Hiller I think they don't stand a chance getting past the Russian goal line.
denis (864 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
And Brouduer is already the best golie ever wins wise... So I guess but then again the devils always falter in the playoffs, not at Broudeur fault but probably the weak scoring.
Kaptin, My apologies. You do know your history. You just don't know how to either follow a topic or transition to another one.

Centurian, Olympic hockey was always relevant. Maybe North American didn't care as much, because NHLers weren't in the game, but in the 70s and 80s, there were very very few Europeans in the NHL, so the Olympics were certainly relevant for them.
wydend (0 DX)
21 Feb 10 UTC
@denis: The USA's strongest point is probably its goaltending. Miller is one of the best goalies in the NHL, and you don't need your goaltending to be deep. And last time I checked, Russia wasn't looking so hot. I think the Swedes have a good chance or passing Russia as the other favorite besides Canada.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
21 Feb 10 UTC
Looking at the point count, in the top 5 right now are the US, Canada, Russia, Sweden, and Finland...

USA/Canada tonight, followed by Sweden/Finland...

Important night of hockey.

The US is so tired of hearing how GREAT Canadian Hockey is... it's like hearing about how the New York Yankees won again...

Danm Yankees, Damn Canadian Hockey.

And then Teemu Selanne is my favorite player of all time, many years watching him on the Ducks... here's hoping the Finnish Flash has a good game later.

But first- the US is taking Canada down a peg.

So I just started watching this show and I am addicted.. it is probably the worst show on tv- an absolute carcrash...
However at the same time it is the funniest and greatest show on tv..
The Situation could not even be dreamed up as a character.
What are other people's thoughts- I assume only North Americans will know what I'm talking about- but aussies don't fret it is coming MTV Australia in April
