Obama unscripted
I had to share this, a Q&A session where Obama takes unscripted questions from his political opponents. It really feels like a window into the reality of American politics that cuts through a lot of the nonsense, definitely worth watching:

I already got this video sent to me by Mitch (campaign coordinator). I agree, this cuts through the crap that the Tea Party extremists are throwing out there. I like Obama's attitude looking forward, though as a Democrat I am disappointed that he didn't get too much done in his first year. Hopefully his bipartisan approach as demonstrated in the videp will be met by a majority of logical Republicans, otherwise it won't work. I hate ignorant people who call him an ideologue and a socialist without knowing what either of those things are (ie Glenn Beck and Flembaugh), he holds many ideals but he is a pragmatist and a smart economist. I agree, this video is worth watching, even for paranoid tea partiers.

Well...if you don't count saving us from falling into a second great depression...I guess he didn't do much.
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
He may have helped with that (I was talking in terms of health care, sorry) with the bailout, we will see where this leads us, it is still too early to tell. You do not know that we would have fallen into a second great depression, you can't simply guess about such things, but I do agree that the stimulus package for now has steadied the bleeding of the economy to a point where we can now perform proper surgery

Haha nice I am watching this and then I come onto Dip and see that kestas posted it. That's why this site is legit.

Jim, the market is not finished crashing my friend. Obama has yet to accomplish anything he set out to do, besides win a bullshit Nobel Peace Prize.
jimgov (219 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
I think that he was governing with one hand tied behind his back because of the mess he was left with. I think the next 3 years will be better.
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
I don't know if it was bullshit, and I wouldn't be so bitter about it Ice. Seriously, watch the video linked at the top, Obama does a great job here. He is a good leader at worst. He may earn that NPP yet if people give him a chance. Once again, it's only been a year, politics slow things down, especially when the GOP decides to be a dick.
jimgov (219 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
The market is not finished crashing? Are you serious? Look at where the market went and where it is now.
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
it will bounce around for a while, at least we're back over 10k
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
looking at the DOW JONES: last year started under 7k went over 10k by end of year. something good has happened though we're not close to being where we need to be (unemployment wise). It has dropped around 600 pts the last month though, that scared me a bit
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
The bottom is going to fall out of the market again, it's going to drop lower than it did before. Look at the signs you twit.
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
I doubt it.
jimgov (219 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Wow. If I want to hear this Republican bullshit I will watch FOX news.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Doubt all you want, did you think the market was going to do what it did?
Doubt it.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Republican? Ha I laugh at your failure of a government
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
You mean rise over 3k points after crashing. And yes my Dad and I both agreed that the market was going south, that's why he pulled lots of his stock out. I'd like to hear your reasoning though.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Read the market.
jimgov (219 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
"Republican? Ha I laugh at your failure of a government"
That is exactly my point. When you want the government to fail just because your side did not win the election, you cause the entire system to fail.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
My side? Are you implying that I take sides in your false institutions?
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
enlighten me iceray about how you read the market specifically
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
30 Jan 10 UTC
@Thucydides Yup I thought the vid might appeal to a few regulars, hopefully not all already saw it :-)

@Iceray There have been many doomsday predictions regarding the financial crash, but none of the past predictions of financial apocalypse have yet come true.
If you think something bad is coming from "reading the market" obviously you're reading something that no-one else is, because if reading the market predicted certain doom there'd be an immidiate crash, because who wants to be in a market that's doomed?
Arguing we're all so stupid because we can't read the market is arguing that everyone participating in the market is stupid, and no matter how cynical you are that's a stretch
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Very carefully, it's too much effort to point it out.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
I didn't say you were stupid, I called Jimgov a twit because he is a twit.
Invictus (240 D)
30 Jan 10 UTC
I doubt that any politician would do anything "unscripted." Even if the questions were more-or-less randomly chosen, there has to be somebody to weed out nutty questions about JFK assassination and 9/11 truther nonsense. Also, no one, not no one answers questions in a public speaking setting with out knowing the answers (how how to answer, there's a difference) every question.

To me this seemed a bit more like a glorified press conference. It's a good idea to make the President somewhat accessible to the public, but don't pretend that it'll be a truly enlightening exercise.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Yes but Invictus they can lie and say it's unscripted because the American public feeds off of those lies.
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
The American Public feeds off the paranoia and fear projected by the GOP and its offshoots, namely the Tea Party. I think Obama's presence made it glorified because he is just that good, it doesn't seem scripted in any way. Cynicism is perfectly fine, but it needs to have some basis in reality Iceray.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
30 Jan 10 UTC
@Invictus: The place it was held was a republican convention of some sort, I'm not sure about the details but I think the location it was held would act as a filter against the 9/11 stuff

And no you can tell Obama came to the meeting with a message of bipartisanship that he tried to work into every question. Often it was a hand in glove fit but sometimes he did sidestep the questions a bit, and he was also presented with a document in advance regarding healthcare that would be the theme of the Q&A, but I'd be very suprised if the questions and responses were actually scripted

Also it doesn't have to be anywhere near "enlightening" to be many many times more informative and interesting than typical US political "debate" in the media
ottovanbis (150 DX)
30 Jan 10 UTC
I agree 100%
jimgov (219 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Wow Iceray..nice comeback.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
30 Jan 10 UTC
Yeah... it wasn't scripted lol. And there's no sense in which the questions were hand-picked... these were Republicans from the House of Representatives. That's who was asking questions.
