advice for new and experienced players
I got this idea when discussing advice on Iceray's thread. I think it would be great, to give some general advice for other players. Not everyone has the chance to be in the school of war games, and some people have a hard time learning from their mistakes. This might disadvantage me because this is my basic strategy for every game, but I don't care.

To Whom It May Concern,
After much deliberation, I have come to conclude that my actions and efforts have afforded me the title of "Mod". I now seek this title to be attached to me officially.
Please have this done by tomorrow evening.

Right, there so many threads on the issue I decided to start this one in the hopes the other ridiculous ones would then be allowed to die out and we could move on.

Lord of the Rings themed game...
Those with Tolkienesque names (and others who love tolkien as well) are invited. What do we want to make it? 20 or fewer points and anonymous are my only requirements. What do you all want to see?

Global Chat only or full press? WTA or PPSC? Requirement that all press must in some way make a reference to a story or an aspect of Professor Tolkien's world?

Sure, be a multi. then they'll finally ban your ass.<grin> And it is Gollum (two 'l's)...

I recomend WTA, and full press. There were no halfway winners in LotR, and niether side was fully aware of what the other was up to. Also, tolkien-speak for all participants is a must. The game itself needs a Tolkienesque name as well.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 09 UTC
Absolutely it would have a Tolkien inspired name. I was thinking "The Battle of Five Armies (plus 2)". I like your reasoning for making it full press and WTA. And what kind of phase length. I would have to say at least 24 hours, but am open to even longer. 3 Days to represent the time it took Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas to reach Rohan? Or six in honor of the Riders ride to Minas Tirith?
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 09 UTC
Oh, I will choose a password that all moderate Tolkien fans will know, but few casual followers will and no one outside of the Tolkien realm will. I'll leave a riddle for you to solve (how Tolkienesque) that will be a clue. We just need a phase length.

Im in, I love his books, just read one of the compilations of unpublished material, (Volume 3 of the peoples of middle earth i think) I'd love to play.

I'll give it a little longer, then I'll create the game and post it here along with the password riddle.

I'll make the bet be 19 - the number of rings ruled by The One Ring not including itself.
Am I allowed in if I haven't read the Silmarillion? I've read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. ;)

OK, it's created.

The Battle of Five Armies (plus 2)
WTA, 19 point buy-in, full press, Anonymous

Password Riddle:
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

The riddle is not in the movies, so don't expect to find it there.

13 Dec 09 UTC
Oh, and it is a 3 day phase with a 6 day start.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 09 UTC
@ZaZa - you can get in if you can solve the riddle. And having read the Silmarillion isn't a requirement to solving it. It's in the trilogy a couple of times.
Lol, I'll have to start reading.

I'm in =)...have been a Tolkien fan for over 30 years!!
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 09 UTC
You'll find it fairly early on, but you should be able to solve it just by reading the riddle. The clues are all there, if you know the characters and their roles.
I'm confused. I know what/who it's referring to but that's not the password! I'll have to keep guessing?
Draugnar (0 DX)

I read The Hobbit in 5th grade (1976-77), so I'm right there with you, Gary.

How about renaming the countries to reflect our Tolkien game....Russia=Mordor, England =Hobbits, Germany=Saruman, etc....
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 09 UTC
I wish that were possible. I wonder if anyone has ever done a Middle-earth variant with a map of Middle-earth and all the primary nations. I used to play MePBM, but that game has more character role playing and involves random numbers and such. It isn't the pure strategy and communication of Diplomacy.
Italy is Gondor.
Germany-Rohan

I know we cant rename the countries on this site, but if we posted what each country represents in the Tolkien world we could play along as if it were?
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Dec 09 UTC
Let's see...

Russia is Mordor
England is The Shire
Germany is Isengard/Orthank and the surrounding forest of Fangorn
Italy is the Corsairs (the pirates)
Turkey is the Mumaki (the men with the oliphants)
France is Gondor and more specifically the Gondorans fighting at Minis Tirith
Austria is Rohan

Who would be up for it? Everyone would be assigned a country which they would have to assassinate once the game began by a third (or eighth) party. If you killed their target, you received a new target, and so forth.
