Grammar
I personally can't stand bad grammar and spelling. I'm in a game right now where I am seriously contemplating stabbing the crap out of my ally solely because I don't want to have to read the horrible writing anymore. While the stab is, I think, a pretty good one and I'll have help from my other new allies, is my main reason for doing it ridiculous? Or are there people out there who agree with me?

Bad grammar can make for a great tactic at times. ;-)

I look past grammar, spelling, lack of capitalization and punctuation because what matters is getting further in the game. If the stab puts you in a better position to win, then that is the reason to do it.

Of course now your allies in ALL of the game you are playing in are unfinalizing their moves and scrambling to prevent your stab. Assuming they read the forum of course.
Ok, be honest PooterCannon, how many times did you reread your post, because you knew you'd be raked through the coals if there was a grammar or spelling error? :P
Pooter,
You have to realize that English is not the first language to everyone on this site. When you are ready to converse in Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Bulgarian, then you can maybe your stab would be called for.
Invictus (240 D)

You can tell when someone is just being lazy or stupid and when someone doesn't know English as their first language.

I'm with you, pootercannon. A large part of it is because your name is hilarious, but I'm with you.

"While the stab is, I think, a pretty good one and I'll have help from my other new allies, is my main reason for doing it ridiculous?"

It's a little clunkity, but what's wrong? I think it's just poorly written rather than wrong. What do you want, a Hemingway writing here?
Katsarephat (100 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
What's the error? I don't see one.
aoe3rules (949 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
There *is* an error, which I will let you supposed gramarians find for yourselves.
WhiteSammy (132 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
i think that the comma should be a period
Katsarephat (100 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
Oh, I wonder if he wants a comma between "good one" and "and"?
aoe3rules (949 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
Wrong. Actually, you might be right, but it's not the one I was referring to. And yes, I'm sure. I saw it and wondered if it was actually an error, and I looked it up and it was. A rather rare one, though.
Laoban (1260 D)

If you plan to stab your ally anyway and you would feel less guilty by naming "bad grammar" as the rationale, then go ahead with your own psychological healing.

If your diplomacy strategy is driven by the English proficiency of your fellow players, then good luck to your game. I don't see how you can survive this game playing like that.
Caviare (123 D)

His last sentence shouldn't begin with a conjunction. Or is that rule a thing of the past? And do I need to review everything I thought I knew about grammar? Or would that be a waste of my time?
aoe3rules (949 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
No, I don't think conjunctions are not meant for beginnings of sentences. Again, they might be, but if they are, it's not what I was thinking of.

I can forgive bad spelling, and bad grammar bugs me but it's easy to tell when there is a non-English speaker behind the keyboard.

What bugs me is people who complain when _I_ wish to exercise my writing muscles. Sometimes I like to have a little fun, and I've had a couple of people actually turn on me because they don't like it. Poetry and quotations appropriate to the situation, and often speaking "in character" are, to me, one of the attractions of this online hobby.

I had one game where a player was so egregious in his anti-humorousness that alliances shifted just to eliminate him to punish him for his idiocy.

So to me, it's the attitude behind the writing. Bad grammar still grates on my sensibilities, but I'd never turn on someone just because they can't write effectively. Of course, I wouldn't hire them, either.
aoe3rules (949 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
By "speaking 'in character' " do you mean "role-playing"? As in, pretending to be an actual prime minister of whichever power.
Otto von Boris (875 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
I agree with DingleberryJones. Get over the grammar in these games, some players are posting in a language other then their own. Besides, I hear far worse everyday in real life.....
aoe3rules (949 D)
22 Apr 09 UTC
Otto von Boris, either tell us which idiots you've been playing with (well, not idiots if they don't speak English well) or tell us in which terrible, sanity-devoid grammarless wasteland you live in.

Este post não faz qualquer sentido. Nem toda a gente fala a mesma língua que vocês, como tal podem não conseguir responder da forma mais apropriada, sem dar alguns pontapés na gramática.

Now try to answer me in my main language without making mistakes please.

Not everyone has the same mother language. For me this a stupid post.
