I know a lot of people are always complaining about how everyone plays PPSC games because they are 'safer' point-wise, and how PPSC ruins the game. And there are people who don't like playing games which might be joined by multi-accounters or metagamers. And then there's the possibility of missing turns, but some people refuse to play in long games, as they are considered 'boring'. So...

Why not create three games with three-day phase lengths, staggered (time of creation) so that there is one deadline each day? The games would be passworded and created by a group of players who have picked participants prior to starting the games. The bet would be one-third of the average single game, but all the games would be WTA. The games would not be 'ruined' by people playing to survive, but there's still 3/7ths of the 'point security' of PPSC, which is still 3 times as much as a standard WTA. Games would not be boring or slow as with one deadline each day, it's normal speed, but you have 3 days to negotiate, improving the quality of the game, AND if you can't get to the computer for a day, it will only mess up one of the games.

I thought of a bunch of other benefits to this, but they would take forever to type. Plus I've gone and forgotten them.

sounds fun, I normally bet about 5 points inot a game so we just need to split that by 3 now...
aoe3rules (949 D)
04 Mar 09 UTC
@xcurly: Not possible. Well, yes, but even as the game will OBVIOUSLY let your split 5 points into 3 parts, you do know this is like how playing as Russia and ending with 3 centres will make you lose points? Think about it. Each game is 1 2/3 points, and WTA. But it rounds down for some reason. So TWO WHOLE POINTS would just vanish! No way I'm giving up 1/1000th of my points for something that risky.

If it were PPSC, though, it would work. Five divided by three divided by seven rounded up every time would create more points than we put in. So you could deliberately lose all but one centre and still gain points.

i was confused by the vast number of problems that your idea was trying to solve
Onar (131 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
It seemed pretty simple: three games, started on three different days, (monday-tuesday-wednesday, for example), all of which, containing the same players.
aoe3rules (949 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
@alamothe: I didn't intend to solve all of them, only the first two. The rest just happened to fix themselves. I mean, with the others being.

Oh, and I thought you were confused about my second post. With all the nonsensical fractions meaning nothing. But of course it rounds low decimals up and high decimals down. How could you not see that? How could it be done any other way?
youradhere (1345 D)

I like this idea. What would the buy in be for each game?
aoe3rules (949 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
@youradhere: I don't know yet. If anyone's interested, post in this thread or email me.

For the first try, probably 5 or 10 points each game. But who knows, maybe someday all games will be played like this.

Okay, then, bump, and is anyone interested?
youradhere (1345 D)

Would the players be playing the same powers in all three games? And if so, would they be encouraged to meta-game between the three?
Onar (131 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
I should hope not for either of those questions.
It's random, so I suppose they could end up playing the same powers in all three...
Hopefully, we can count on the honour system to prevent rampant metagaming.
Shrimpy (100 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
right thats is a good idea but unless someone doesn't finalize all the games will be on the same schedule after a couple phases, that is if someone comes online and only finalizes one game instead of all three
Onar (131 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
True, but that would defeat the purpose of this game series, wouldn't it? So long as it's password-protected, we shouldn't have this problem.
Toby Bartels (361 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
If nobody ever Finalizes, then the deadlines will remain consistent between the games, although they will shift 5 or 10 minutes later each phase because the php program gives that grace period. But that should be OK.

For metagaming, it may be simpler just to accept that, OK, we're all playing the same 3 games with the same 7 people at the same time, so let's metagame between those 3 and just make that part of the rules. Which doesn't mean that you can't ally with a player in one game and fight against that same player in another game! (I played a game once where I was allied with a power on the west side of Switzerland although we were enemies to the east, and it didn't confuse us. In WWII, the western Allies and the USSR were allied against Germany, although the west was neutral in the war between the USSR and Finland while the USSR was neutral in the war between the Allies and Japan.) But this would validate threats, promises, reprisals, and rewards across the 3 games.

Like youradhere, I'd also like to wait until my current game finishes. I want to play only one game at a time to avoid burning out, although I would consider this set of 3 as one game. If you do it without us, let us know how it goes!
Onar (131 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
Hm, I don't like the idea of using metagaming as a tactic in these 3 games, though. Sure, it makes sense, but I still don't like it.
aoe3rules (949 D)
05 Mar 09 UTC
@Toby Bartels: Wait, how did I not think of that? You mean a variant where metagaming is allowed between the three games? I suppose that would be fine as long as all the players knew that before the game, although if it makes points move to the winner more than they normally should (this would make them win 3 games instead of one) rules issues might get involved.

Also, I'm probably not going to start without you (still talking to Toby here) because that was one of the issues I was trying to address (people refusing to play multiple games).

@Onar: I don't like the metagaming idea either. It would be a fun variant to these, I suppose, but not until we're tested this.

And yes, I'm also for 5 point games (look at my points, then consider how neat it would be if I spent fifteen).
Toby Bartels (361 D)
06 Mar 09 UTC
I'm perfectly willing to play a variant where it's the same 7 players on 3 games but metagaming is not allowed. It will be hard for me not to allow one game's actions to influence my opinion of (say) how trustworthy a player is in another game, but I think it's already acceptable for past game records to have that sort of influence. I can avoid the temptation for reprisals and rewards, and of course easy to avoid threats and promises.

I suggested allowing metagaming within the triple on the grounds that good rules should be easy to follow and easy to enforce. Sort of like how they allow metagaming within league play (or so say some discussions that I read here). But you're right that it would increase the odds that the same players do well in more than one game, which worsens the safety feature of this scheme.

If you wait for me, then I will do this and will even wait for others if necessary. But if you find 7 people before I'm ready, you may want to go without me anyway, since it's not like I'm the sort of experienced player that you want to judge a new variant. (Just look at my record ….)
thymin (133 D)
06 Mar 09 UTC
I'll throw my daggers in the pot for this. I'm with Toby on the metagaming issue, in fact I think he said what I was thinking even better than I could have, lol. So, metagaming or not I think this could be a good series of games. Also, I would like to second (or third) the vote for 5 points per game.
aoe3rules (949 D)
06 Mar 09 UTC
Okay, then:

3 games of 5 points each (any suggestions for names?).
3 day phases; games started on three different consecutive days. Game creation will begin when youradhere and Toby finish their current games.
Non-metagaming variant (I suppose it's not a variant; that's standard).
Players so far: thymin, Toby Bartels, youradhere, and I. Three slots are open.

Questions and anyone else interested should post in this thread or send an email.

but if you are in 3 games with always the same 7 people, wouldn't that give a lot of ground for meta-gaming ?

you let me win this one, I let you win the other one etc

and if not so blatant, it is still something that could be born from grudges of those that have been stabbed and now have to chose whether to keep up their alliance or switch
Akroma (967 D)
06 Mar 09 UTC
but wait, why not use that set-up for a 3D-diplomacy game ?

7 players in 3 different games, and meta-game is explicitely encouraged, turning the whole thing into a brutal mindbender
kinda like this
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/7886/4dgosz0.jpg
This seems like a good way to strengthen alliances. It would be difficult to stab someone in one game when that person might have the opportunity to return the favor in another game. It might keep people more honest. On the other hand, if two people were neighbors in all three games then it could provide a perfect opportunity to form alliances in all three games.

I was thinking about looking for interest in a game where everyone who joins will have a win/draw rate of 50% and over. This game could be a WTA or PPSC and probably be about 100 point buy in or so) and 24 hours?.
