It’s been a while since we’ve have a best of tournament, and with mafia on hiatus for a month, now may be the best time for one. After all they seem to unite us in arguing about something that isn’t politics or site drama. And since we’ve done best author, musical act and even person before, I feel like the next logical medium is film. As such I am opening nominations for the Greatest Film Tournament. I will GM, though I may need some help from those participating on adjudication as I won’t always be around. However, before we have a tournament we need nominations, and here is the process I plan to use for doing so (if you have suggestions feel free to post them).
CATEGORIES/GENRES:
So last time a tournament like this was organized by time period, with 32 entrants in each time period. But I feel it would allow us to share a more diverse cross section of movies if we organized it by genre. As such, I we will nominate movies in following 8 categories.genres, with 8 or 16 spots in each. Genres may change depending on how the nomination process is going:
Action/Adventure: Your Die Hards, Indiana Jones and your superhero movies.
Melodrama/Epics: Schindler’s List, Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind. Focus a lot on the emotion of the characters or have long drawn out stories.
Mystery/Noir: Mystery centric, detective, all that jazz. The Maltese Falcon, Clue and Brick belong here.
Sci-Fi: Do I need to explain this one. Lots of technology, usually in the future. Blade Runner, Star Wars (Space Opera isn’t a genre here sorry) and Arrival belong here.
Thriller/Horror: Events and plot develop for more suspense and big reveals, sometimes meant to scare the audience. Includes Nightcrawler, Gone Girl, It Follows and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Romance: Love, love, love. Casablanca, The Notebook and You’ve got mail.
Comedy: Makes us all laugh. Airplane, Tropic Thunder and Office Space Belong here.
Foreign Films: Better to give them their own category. Seven Samurai, Amelie, Battleship Potemkin and the Mirror belong here.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Only qualifications are a movie must be real and been released in theatres or on DVD/Bluray/VHS. However, no more than 2 movies can be directed by the same person to increase the diversity of films.
NOMINATION PROCESS:
Every person may nominate up to four movies (this may change depending on how many people participate). To do this simply use double octothorpes nominate and the name of the movie. (for example: ##NOMINATE Jack and Jill). Without the octothorpes it doesn’t count. It would be helpful for you to also list the category you wish for them to be in. A nomination counts as one “vote” for a movie to be in the tournament. You may not nominate a movie that has already be nominated.
SECONDING NOMINATIONS:
Every person may second up to three nominations. To do this simply use double octothorpes second and the name of the movie. (for example: ##SECOND Jack and Jill). Without the octothorpes it doesn’t count. A second counts as one “vote” for a movie to be in the tournament. You can not second a movie you nominated.
SELECTING Movies FOR THE TOURNAMENT:
The 16 movies that have the most votes (nomination + seconds) in their section will be included in the tournament. Ties may be broken by a sudden death second, if that doesn’t work then it will based off of which was nominated first.
SEEDING/BRACKET ORGANIZATION:
There will be four brackets: Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D. These groups will be created by combining the selected movies from two of the categories (done by random number generator). And every movie will be seeded by number of votes for them. All ties will be broken by random number generator. After that the tournament will begin. Rules for that will be released after the nominations are finished and sorted.
NOTE: I reserve the right to change the rules of the nomination process if the current one is too hard to follow or has serious problems, as there are bound to have some.
Hopefully we can all get involved and have a fun time arguing about movies. Have a nice day webdippers!
