Okay, I'll bite. I'm left wing as all hell. My wife and I have one of my libertarian friends over every other week for dinner. We talk politics for 10 minutes, agree to disagree, and then drink beer and gossip about our other friends. We are entirely civil the whole time.

He did threaten to write in "Giant Meteor" on his ballot. I'll have to ask him if he went through with it.

I'm even friends with a Trump supporter on the Facebooks, so there.

The point? I dunno. Drink beer, have dinner, tell off color jokes with someone of the opposite political persuasion. Works for me.

Marginalized communities should be afraid. To insist otherwise is to play down the campaign promises of the president-elect. Who should they believe? You or the words that come out of Trump's mouth? He will have the power to ramp up night raids as soon as he takes office.

Aren't you a convert to Islam? I'm a white European by ethnicity and have U. S. citizenship, but I'm very afraid I will be targeted for my Spanish name and political beliefs.

Democracy isn't about uniting, it is about one coalition beating another. Clinton supporters don't need to support Trump, we need to focus on rebuilding our coalition and winning in 2 years.

I'm not saying you have to agree with everything Trump says or does, and I'm not saying to discount the fear. In fact, on this forum I've encouraged Trump supporters to take the fear seriously. I'm just saying we don't have to be nearly as contentious as this, that we don't have to live practically in two different countries where two very different things are happening when there was only one event. Damage is being done to our country, and it's our fault.

Telling people it's irrational to be afraid for their lives right now, as many are, is the same as if Clinton won and someone walked up to you and said, "What the fuck do you mean you voted for Trump?? You just don't know what's good for you!!"
This isn't about me. This is about a country. The divisiveness that has spawned since the morning of November 9th is something Obama, Clinton, AND Trump all recognize. And they want to try and move together past that. But getting the country behind that is going to be Trump's first major challenge. My biggest fear is that he fails that.

I'm not afraid. But people are. There is GENUINE fear, and you can't simply ignore it.

It's not about Trump's policies necessarily, or even him as a person. It's about people who will see this not simply as a policy victory but also as a vindication to treat people like shit. To disparage Muslims, women, etc. It's not all Trump supporters. It's probably not even most. But the sect exists. And they terrify people.

I'm not an extremist. I'm a centrist who doesn't want to watch condescending assholes from opposite ends of the spectrum tear my country apart by refusing to acknowledge what the other side has to say.

Oh for goodness sake, can people stop blaming all the problems and terrible people out there on Trump winning. Stop whining, and go outside and make a difference. Go out and visit a Muslim friend, or volunteer in a place that helps minorities so you can directly comfort them, or make positive posts on Facebook encouraging the minorities that are feeling a little worried right now. (At least that if you can't be assed to go outside.)

Voter turnout was around 50%, and less than half of them voted for Trump. That is a very small population that voted for Trump, and I guarantee you most of them didn't vote for him because they were bigots, but because it was an anti-Hillary vote. The average person is still the same they were a week go, and Trump winning doesn't magically transform Americans into people of hate. Are the people cowering for fear and still crying not noticing the countless people who are upset with them?

I am sick of the "end of the world" posts and how every racist and bad thing people do is because, "Trump has caused this."
These guys are literally as bad as the Republicans I know when Obama got elected.
