Here it is. The main post describes how players cheat, and one of the top comments goes in to why. It's a fascinating read.
I think the majority of our cheaters are high school kids with too much time on their hands and no respect for site rules.
I think there are also one or two people who enjoy trying to one up the moderators- most of these are shut down with brute force (yes, we will repeatedly ban people who keep creating accounts), or get bored because of the way the system is designed (our cheating detection is intentionally inefficient so that users can't guess how we're detecting them, and also so that the patience of the moderators usually outlasts the trolls who want to keep coming back).
Those who have been around a long time will remember some of the more high profile cheaters that we've caught- I can't speculate on *their* motivations, but I do feel for people who feel the need to inflate their ratings in a bord game world with only a few thousand active users and no real prizes. That said, the moderators try to keep the site fair for everyone, which takes a lot of time and effort. I'm very grateful for their hard work.
Although there's more to our cheating detection than IP collection, we occasionally get people who say "well, I've read your source code and X would allow me to get past the cheating detection". I have two responses to those players:
1) We have cheating detection tools that are not in the source code. One of Jmo's major contributions to the site was to design and implement some tools and processes for better cheating detection. There's a reason that the moderators joke about Jmo being a robot- he single handedly caught more cheaters than any other moderator. We had to hire three mods to replace him.
2) of course it's possible to hide a multi account on webdip, even given those tools. What's much harder is using a multi to improve your performance in tournaments or to break the top ten in GR.
It's also amazing some of the abuse the team get when we ban people for repeatedly breaking the site rules despite warnings. And the lies are sometimes hilarious:
"Oh, I didn't know my friend was in that anonymous game until after it finished"
"Then why is your first message to him 'hey john, still good for what we talked about at school'?"
Etc
