Why do in-game messages appear multiple times.
As title -- Most messages sent to me repeat over the course of several days. Can someone explain why this happens?

Please Read Mods!!
I am planning on organising a tournament at my school, and to make the games have the right people in the right positions, I am asking any mod who might be willing to help me to reply or PM me. All I would be asking is that the mod would take a list of countries with which user should be each, and switch the people to their correct country's. Thank you all :)

I just joined a game, second one to join, and a few minutes later the first player left. The game hasn't even started. I hope it's not some emergency, like illness or something. Besides that, why would anyone do that?

Use webDiplomacy as adjudicator for offline game?
Hi!
Is there a way to use webDiplomacy as an adjudicator? I'm going to play a live boardgame, but would like to track the moves online to make sure we're applying all rules correctly.

We occasionally get complaints that we don't follow the rulebook for press, since we allow discussion during builds and retreats (and the rulebook expressly forbids this).

So! We've added a new press mode that follows the rulebook - where there is no discussion available during builds and retreats (although you can still see messages sent during the discussion phase, and still write notes to yourself).

Since there is no discussion during builds/retreats, any orders can only be "readied" - there is no save button. This might be of interest to the live game community- who occasionally play games with agreement to ready builds and retreats anyway - and this press mode may enable slightly faster live games.

It will also be useful for Diplomacy purists, or players who want to practice their FTF negotiations (where builds/retreats must be discussed in advance, possibly before you know which units are retreating or how many builds your alliance will have).

To write that a little clearer - only builds/retreats are autoreadied. You can still save your Diplomacy phase orders without readying, as normal.

This is great. I know some people want to talk during build and retreats, but it makes the game for sure more like FTF but you need to learn to put your desires for these in your normal press. +1.

Now we just need time specific live games and the world will be at peace ;)

This is great and I will be happy if this would be the de-facto default.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

I think we could consider that if we get a lot of call for it. I think it will be a new mode for the majority of our members, even though it's described in the rulebook.
Great addition, very nice of the developers to arrange it.

Not to help kickstart a conversation I don't want, but I don't think it should become the default.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

There aren't any plans to make it the default - and we wouldn't look at it unless it was regularly requested.

Fantastic. This will also make longer press games a little quicker, I think.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
01 Feb 16 UTC
I see the logic there, but I feel like changing the way default press works would be fairly unpopular. Let's wait until those who've only played online have had a few games of rulebook press and see.

if you're to be a Diplomacy site, play the game the way it is supposed to play, and all other things can be a variant of it
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
01 Feb 16 UTC
ssorenn, by "specific live game times" do you mean games that are only live for the first two hours for example? Because that's not how the rulebook is (heck, rulebook specifies a specific live game phase timer!). (Also I hate this idea and would never play it. Playdip has it and I hated it, this is not conjecture)
ssorenn (0 DX)
01 Feb 16 UTC
lastly, now that we can play with no press for retreat and build phases, you also should be able to set a lower timelimit for those phases as well

IE: 48 hour FP game, with 24 hour build and retreat phases(no talking)
Zybodia (355 D)

Do people actually use retreat/build phases to discuss retreats and builds? In the local tournament, it's been to get a jump on spring planning and to fix the time that the turns end.

Valis, yes... the added benefit for me is i would not have to play with you ............this is not conjecture :)
Yonni (136 D(S))

The game was designed to be FtF which is why the rules have 15 minute turns and no press during retreats/builds. Playing be correspondence allows you to relax those rules. No reason to make it default.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
01 Feb 16 UTC
[I wouldn't advocate it not being added to the site, I don't think it's particularly actively harmful, and most live players would quickly or immediately recognize not to do it]

ssorenn - how would you feel about a feature that just ended the game in a draw if no one has won by a certain date (eg end of 1910)?

i got just about all my CDs when i first started here playing live games. @48 years old with kids, i dont have the time needed(or dont want to allocate the time needed) to play full live games. With all the variants of everything that this site offers, i fail to see why this would be a bad OPTION. Nobody has to play it if they dont want, but for me, i would play live again if i was certain that i did not have to allocate 3+hours to the game

@ATC, i dont like the forced draw....they use this as a hard stop playing with the windycityweasels.(their local bar game). the internet adds a time factor that allows games to come to completion. WE ARE HERE TO TRY TO WIN, not draw

Live game community has been getting some love finally. 7 minute phases and faster builds/retreats have been a big thing we needed. Now, auto-disband/retreat when there is only one option is next :)

Haha! Sadly, I'm afraid it's going to be a while before that one is at the top of the pile. It's quite a lot of effort, given the way the adjudicator works.

Although, help is welcome if others feel it should be easy :)
