Non-specific game advice
I am in a game between 4 powers. One of the powers (in the middle of the board) has NMRed several times (he did write in the global chat but did not submit moves), and all the remaining powers benefit from it (some more, some less). Should we vote for a draw, or each one should try to go for a solo?

When's the cutoff?
On the Ghost Rating website, it says that "The Ghost-Rating list filters out games where the game ends before Autumn 1903."
So, a game ending immediately after builds of '03 would count for GR?
Would a game ending during Diplomacy of Autumn '03 count for GR?

'War' in Syria?
"The point, of course, is that the West had grown so used to attacking Arab lands - France had become so inured to sending its soldiers and air crews to Africa and the Middle East to shoot and bomb those whom it regarded as its enemies - that only when Muslims began attacking Western capital cities did we suddenly announce that we were "at war"."

Gaming laptops
Some help please! In my search for good gaming laptops around the €1000 mark, I am now looking at these 2:
http://www.bol.com/nl/p/msi-gp60-2qf-1094nl-gaming-laptop/9200000048904923/#product_specifications
http://www.bol.com/nl/p/acer-aspire-nitro-vn7-572g-511v-gaming-laptop/9200000048907779/#product_specifications
Which is best? Are they both not good? What's wrong with them? Thanks!

A few Caveats:

1) I can't read dutch
2) I have no first hand experience with MSI or Acer

I would go with the first one, because you get a slightly better graphics card.

I like they both have a SSD; that will make a big difference. 16GB would be nice. It will be the biggest factor in how long the laptop is usable.

These should all be more than 8GB as well as more expensive. Especially the graphic cards leave me clueless when it comes to what's better. When talking value for money, I'm clueless about everything.

The main thing that will hinder you with a gaming laptop is cooling. I am a laptop guy and I like games, and it is a huge pain. My laptop is a Dell and nearly 4 years old, and it can run any game you can throw at it - but for a lot of newer games, it will heat-crash within minutes even if I'm running it on a cooling pad in an air-conditioned room in the winter.

If I had the money to spend, I would recommend either Origin or Eurocom laptops, because they actually have the capacity to cool the components that allow you to run sweet games. They're expensive... you end up paying much more for the same thing you could get in a desktop. But if you're like me, you don't want a desktop in the first place.

A friend of mine has a couple Eurocoms and they're amazing, but I think they're like $6,000 - $8,000 CDN.

This one looks solid, but I'm not liking the way I'm going with prices..

How bad is 8GB? Maybe it's better to just get that 8GB Acer for €1099..

8GB isn't *bad* it's just one of the first bottlenecks of an older computer. Let me see how hard it is to replace the RAM on an ACER.

OK, the memory looks quite annoying to take out.

I will say thought hat ben brings up a good point about heat dissipation. That is a serious limitation of laptops. I don't know how Acer stacks up. You would have to read reviews.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
07 Nov 15 UTC
Before I read reviews, what's your judgment on the 8GB-thing? Are any of the others worth looking at to prevent the bottleneck or is that not worth it due to the increase in price?
I'll keep in mind the heat dissipation.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
07 Nov 15 UTC
And maybe I could pay a pro to replace the memory? No clue what that would cost, but it might be the cheaper option on the whole.

8GB is fine for now and for a while. Yes, you could pay someone to upgrade it when needed or even do it yourself with a friend who has some experience:

I should look into laptops with the new skylake processor and ddr4 ram memory.

Look for a laptop where you can add ram if needed and ofcourse go with atleast 2gigs for gpu.

I see your Dutch. I recommend to ask for info on the tweakers forum.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

The Acer is said to 'get warm pretty quickly' on the tweakers forum. Not sure whether that means it gets too hot though? I'm having trouble finding any other reviews on this particular model.

I love this. So, so true.

I probably won't buy from Dell again.

I used to grill bits of steak on my friends Dell when he played Call of Duty on it.

If you want to game; why are you not just getting a Desktop and custom building? Far far better value for money. I spent £2.5k on my entire PC (including peripherals), three years ago - and it can play pretty much anything at max specs still. I can also turn it in one direction in the winter to use it as a radiator; and the other way around in summer to cool my feet. Win/Win.
wjessop (100 DX)
07 Nov 15 UTC
I wouldn't know where to begin with custom building and I'm not very technical :(
steephie22 (182 D(S))
07 Nov 15 UTC
I considered that but:
A) Space is tricky.
B) Don't want to be stuck in my room all day if I'm gaming..
C) Will be studying in a different city soon. Where do you leave the desktop? At my parents? I can only use it in the weekend, maybe. In my student room? Doesn't seem safe to leave it there. Besides, do I really game during the week?

Flexibility is a really big plus here.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
07 Nov 15 UTC
D) Wouldn't know where to start with custom building either.

Apparently Acers are known for poor heat dissipation. Guess I shouldn't get it? :-(

Anyone thoughts on any of the laptops other than the ones I opened the thread with?

Steephie, look at this one: http://www.bol.com/nl/p/asus-gl552vw-cn104t-gaming-laptop/9200000047694807/

Good CPU, Good GPU, 16GB RAM, SSD. Made by Asus, that has a very good gaming reputation. If you're looking on just this website, this is the one I'd get.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

And, by the way, if anyone wants to build their own PC but is nervous, don't be. The only hard part is picking components, which is very easy to get help with. Putting the computer together is very simple and a lot of fun. Definitely go for it if you're thinking about it.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
07 Nov 15 UTC
I linked that one actually. I wasn't sure about the graphics card because it's 2048 MB though. That's not a problem? Does it have a bottleneck? If not, I might just get that one then.

I'll consider other sites, just wouldn't know where else to look specifically to actually find something I can get in the Netherlands without paying extra taxes and stuff.
Plus it's convenient like this, but if I can save money, screw convenience :P

Still if this is a good deal, probably not worth the hassle trying to find something slightly cheaper. It kind of depends on how much I could hope to gain. Don't want to spend hours looking to maybe save €50. If it's a few hundred though, definitely worth it.

The 950M is an entry level gaming card, you could say. It won't perform as well as a true gaming card, but then again it is much less expensive and you won't have (as much) of a heat issue. 2GB of memory is a criticism review sites have, but again, you get what you pay for.

Here is a review. If you'd like, you can read it, or you can skip down to "Game Benchmarks". You'll see that it holds up pretty well for a laptop with your other specs. Personally, I think it's a fine card.

Second opinions don't hurt either, when spending that much money.

Hello Steephie, did you buy it already. Otherwise, i would advise you to look at Amazon.de. Its a lot cheaper then in the Netherlands, and they wont charge for delivery in the Netherlands
Victorious (768 D)

steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Nov 15 UTC
I did not. Will see, although my German is as bad as abge's Dutch.
I also don't have a creditcard (although I turned 18, so I could get one), which I think you need for Amazon?
MrcsAurelius (3051 D(B))
09 Nov 15 UTC
Peeps probably already said it here (didnt read the entries), but don't get a gaming laptop. It's a really poor investment. They are so much more expensive than there desktop counterparts. Due to the miniaturization and cooling issues the laptop will certainly wear out within 3-5 years and die. I have had multiple in the past. Why do you think companies only insure these babies for max 3 yrs? You also have a lot less options in upgrading it in 2-3 years time to make sure you're able to run the latest stuff. I would always advise a desktop for gaming unless you really, really, really need it to be portable.

NHL All-Star Game
So the NHL has announced a 3-on-3 format for the All-Star Game this season. I believe this format devalues defensemen in that, in a 3-on-3 match, both sides will field a center and 2 wingers to increase scoring chances at the cost of solid defensive play. The NHL has a long history of great defensemen, so I don't believe it is fair to devalue them by devaluing their usefulness in the All-Sta Game (ergo, less All-Star appearances for defensemen versus scorers).
Thoughts?

Well apparently some players in a game entitled to encourage a lack of CDs want to play on with a banned player, so we need a replacement turkey. The position is more decent if you consider the necessary allegiances in place given the position. It'd be a fun challenge to make something of this and far from impossible.
