I would make over $200 a shift in tips during the summer when I was a waiter. During weekday lunches in the middle of the school year, though, I might manage $40 for seven hours. That was at the most popular restaurant in town and it's been on a couple of food shows now.

Paying waiters minimum wage would probably kill tips. As of now, waiters expect to make more than minimum wage while they work, so it would probably be better to apply a charge to every bill (20% - not 18, give me a fucking break) and raise their regular hourly wages so that they do more than cover their payroll taxes and they can actually take some of it home with them.

A lot of countries don't accept tips at all. They just pay their workers a fair amount. Our minimum wage here is too low anyway.

And for those of you that say eliminating tips would kill customer service, please shut up.

A mandatory tip isn't really a tip, is it? Its more like a way for employers to dodge their tax duty.

A fake $10 bill with a Bible quote on the back isn't really a tip either.

Do you realize how many assholes there are? There are far too many for nice people that tip 25% and up (join the movement, especially if your waiter isn't a teenager because you are their living) to counteract the people who leave a $5 on a $60 bill.

I do not believe people who go to restaurants are morally obligated to always tip well, especially because % of bill is not a great indicator of how well the server worked.

I've tipped over 100% before on small bills for great service. I've also tipped less than 5% for shitty service.

Yeah, so have I, when my waiter yelled at me after they fucked up my order. That's the only time. There was another time a waiter messed up my order and was so apologetic that I paid for the messed up order as a tip, which was essentially 50%. Otherwise, I try to empathize. Maybe they're busy. Maybe they're so not busy that they're just out of it. Maybe they have a family situation or their relationship just fell apart. Maybe it's nothing. I don't know, but I try to be nicer than they are.

If everyone took your mentality, abge, then you're right, minimum wage would be a solid place to start. It's just that there are so many people that don't pay any attention to the tip (and the occasional wandering missionary). There are other people who tip before tax, which is just stupid, people who pay after their bill was discounted with a coupon, and others who just stiff their waiter because they are having a bad day or their kids are acting up or something. You're a decent guy and have a good mentality toward it, but a lot of people aren't.

I've heard from the few waitresses I know that they make more with tips than they would have with minimum wage. I think it's similar for a lot of waiters/waitresses.

And the thing is, if they don't get enough tips to make minimum, the restaurant has to pay them up to minimum anyway. So the whole "pay them minimum wage" thing already exists. They are guaranteed to make AT LEAST minimum, possibly (probably if they're good) more.

There are others things to. Some places pool all the tips and then split them so good and bad get the same. One place a kid took about half the money in the tip jar when he left with his parents that didn't see or ignored their kid's behavior.

Minimum wage in most U. S. states is not a living wage. Waiters deserve a reliable living wage just like everybody else.
