It's Maple's Alter Ego! (But Seriously--Should Serling Be Forced to Sell the Team?)
http://nba.si.com/2014/04/29/donald-sterling-adam-silver-nba-owners-reaction/ To be clear--this is HYPOTHETICAL. There's nothing in the NBA Constitution that gives the commissioner the right to do this, so this is more just a thought experiment--say that power existed, and Adam Silver COULD force Serling to sell the team based on his repeated racist comments over the years, with this last doozy being the kicker. If the power existed, SHOULD the man lose his team over this?

Gunboat game for the reliable but poor
I'm tired of the NMRs and CDs that are far too common i the low-bet games I can afford to play. I'd love to play in the big-pot games with the best players, but I don't have the $ (and, hey, I'm not that good anyway). If there are other middle of the road players who feel the same way, perhaps we can organize a password-protected game (or two if there's enough interest) of reliable gunboaters. More below.

Phase length for FTF games?
I've been thinking about putting together a face to face game for some new players (friends who don't play diplomacy.... yet). But, I've never played FTF myself - so:

What kind of phase lengths do people use? I assume that there's also a time or turn cap too (eg game ends in 1910)?

The redefinition of sexual assault
This is a problem to me.

My campus newsletter just sent an email defining sexual assault as:

"Sexual assault is any kind of sexual contact without consent, from groping to rape…even if you’re in a relationship with that person. Consent is a clear and freely given yes, not a coerced yes (like saying, "But don't you love me?") and not the absence of a no. Consent doesn’t have to be awkward; in fact, it can even be sexy! A good way to get consent is to simply ask, “Are you into this?”"

any kind of sexual contact without consent?
any kind of sexual contact without consent??
any kind of sexual contact without consent???

I understand that obtaining consent does, even for a decent guy like old YJ who isn't pushy and likes to wait, the only way to be 100% sure instead of 99.99999% sure that a woman is "into this." I understand that its a valuable tool to raise awareness, especially among young males. However, that does not imply that failure to obtain consent *must* be sexual assault, or is even likely to be. If that is the case I've been sexually assaulted by (don't read this mom) countless women, and sexually assaulted them at the same time.

I feel like attempting to redefine sexual assault will just make young men less likely to pay any attention to the legitimate messages that are part of the movement to obtaining consent. They'll just say, "that's bullshit" and ignore the whole thing. Your thoughts and opinions are welcome.

It's just a poorly worded email and you're trying to create political outcry over it.

It's obvious that they mean any sexual contact that is uninvited and unwanted, or with nil-consent expressed.

It's also dependant on context, ie a nightclub or your bedroom after you invited someone back is different to on campus or in the library.

Just grow up.

And even when she verbalizes a “Yes, YJ, I would like to consent to x,y and z sexual contact with you.” After you have given her a pearl necklace and pass out and she gets pissed off because she never got her big O, all she needs to say is, “But I *never* said yes to anything….I fell asleep and woke up with *this*!” and now my old pal YJ is a convicted criminal.

Horrible, horrifying idea, and totally empowers psychopathic man-haters to fuck over your life *forever*.

My recommendation, YJ, is that before you hold and hand or even dare to open a door for a woman, you get *written* consent. That’s the only way YJ doesn’t end up in the pokey.
krellin (80 DX)
25 Apr 14 UTC
SYnapse - you are a fool. Context has absolutely nothing to do with it. This total empowers *anyone* to claim sexual abuse under *any* circumstances.

"any contact"
"even if you’re in a relationship with that person"

Girlfriend and you go to the bar, come back to the room, watching a movie, she starts snuggling up to you and kissing your neck, so in the heat of the moment you squeeze a boob without asking for permission and suddenly your conservative christian girlfriend - who ONLY wanted to kiss - has just made you a sex offender.

"An,y kind of sexual contact", meaning both parties have to always verbally consent before a kiss? There are people who don't get the fact that no should always mean no, and that needs to be addressed, as well as coercion. But "clear and freely given yes" is a far too narrow definition of consent for "any kind of sexual contact" if neither is elaborated on more than that.

Criminal law is not produced or influenced by campus guidelines. There's not even a bylaw that can redefine rape, jesus this thread is so pointless.

Yes, it sounds like a stupid email. No it's not binding or literal. Do you really have nothing else to complain about?

"It's obvious that they mean any sexual contact that is uninvited and unwanted, or with nil-consent expressed."

@synapse

I know it might really read that way to you, but no, that's not what they are saying at all. Though it is true that the law doesn't say this, it is also true that the consent movement absolutely is making an effort to equate failure to obtain consent with sexual assault in the minds of students. I'm complaining because they are trying to take advantage of the negative connotations associated with sexual assault to make their case, and they don't care that doing so paints old YJ as a rapist. That's a pretty big deal to me, sorry.

I'll cheerfully give you the email of the group that sent this (sorry, I did say newsletter and that is my bad) if you'd like to inquire for yourself as to what they "meant."

" Criminal law is not produced or influenced by campus guidelines. There's not even a bylaw that can redefine rape, jesus this thread is so pointless."

Depends on the court, the judge and the jury. Apart from that, the university, once issuing said policy, can throw you out of school and destroy your name.

Your naive dismissal of this as some meaningless nonsense just demonstrates you are not aware of the world you live in.
krellin (80 DX)
25 Apr 14 UTC
Further, it would be interesting to understand what specific legal rights you have GIVEN UP when you agree to come to a school...meaning that, if the university creates such a policy, regardless of whether or not "normal" law contains such laws - you may very well *still be legally liable* to follow these university rules by forfeiture of your rights upon becoming a student.
krellin (80 DX)
25 Apr 14 UTC
"I see here....yes...on your resume it says you failed to obtain your degree? Care to explain?"

The background check with the university, which some ravenous feminist replied to, will openly declare your dismissal from the school for sexual assault to the potential employer.

And yes, if you have a conservative christian girlfriend who has expressed that she isn't interested in sex, and you violate her wishes, you've probably done something wrong.

It's all fucking context, and you have to be an idiot to be guilty of something. Don't you people get to know women before you try and spread their legs open? If you go around having sex indiscriminately, this kind of shit happens.
SYnapse (0 DX)
25 Apr 14 UTC
Really, you people (only a couple though) talk as though all women are heartless, irrational, whimisical and dangerous (enough to ruin your life).

If that's the case, you seriously need to choose better women to take to bed.

"A good way to get consent is to simply ask, “Are you into this?”"

Well that clears it up nicely. What does 'this' mean? It can'y mean the bit we're doing now if that is already any kind of sexual contact and it can't be any kind of future sexual contact as it isn't clearly defined what the proposer is referring to and what the other person is expecting. If there isn't a meeting of the minds then the whole thing is so abigious as to be unreliable in court.

YJ - I suggest that you reply to the email asking them what they could possibly mean by '/this/' in their email.
SYnapse (0 DX)
25 Apr 14 UTC
I suggest to reply to the email calling it outrageous and insisting on clear definitions, while claiming your rights as a male have been violated...

Or you could fucking study like you're supposed to.

Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

"I guess the students aren't clever enough at your university to make their own decisions are they."

No, statistically they aren't. That's the whole point of asking for consent. Asking for consent isn't being pushed because of 30something grad students like YJ who would usually rather eat than fuck. It also isn't being pushed because of people who deliberately rape - they don't give a fuck if she consents. It's being pushed because of drunk idiots who might actually step over some grey areas. It is useful for people who might do a sexual assault without being aware it's an assault, or somehow convince themselves that touching that passed out chick is "OK."

krellin (80 DX)
25 Apr 14 UTC
Generally speaking, sex is a continuim...it starts with toucing, kissing...then touching other areas...then...and so on. so do you need permission each step along the way? Do you need to provide psycho-chick with a check list? What if you go out of order?
krellin (80 DX)
25 Apr 14 UTC

Also, while clearly I don't advocate sexual assault...people really need to get a fucking grip. I remember making out with some chick in college and we were both drunk and it was progressing and the - *bam* - boob grab. She said 'No', I stopped, we were still friends. Big deal, end of story. Hell, for that matter, same thing happened with the freshman chick that is now my wife! (Took a while to loosen her up...heh heh...now she's a bit of a freak...)

In today's fucked up world femi-nazies tell stupid chick to file charges instead of just letting *normal* human interactions be the learning experiences they are supposed to be. (And yes, boob grab while two college kids are making out is normal)

Damn...sometimes my one dog tries to violate my other dog...but they're still friends an hour later. What the fuck ever happened to live and learn.

Gtlblx (919 D)
25 Apr 14 UTC
"Girlfriend and you go to the bar, come back to the room, watching a movie, she starts snuggling up to you and kissing your neck, so in the heat of the moment you squeeze a boob without asking for permission and suddenly your conservative christian girlfriend - who ONLY wanted to kiss - has just made you a sex offender."

A murky case, since though going strictly by the rules set in the email SHE would have sexually assaulted HIM first with her snuggling and kissing I doubt they would ever be interpreted that way.

"And yes, if you have a conservative christian girlfriend who has expressed that she isn't interested in sex, and you violate her wishes, you've probably done something wrong. "

Her not giving consent and expressing she is not interested in sex are two different things. One is inaction, the other is action.

"It's all fucking context, and you have to be an idiot to be guilty of something. Don't you people get to know women before you try and spread their legs open? If you go around having sex indiscriminately, this kind of shit happens."

That's the problem, there's nothing about context in the email. Legs don't need to be parted for sexual contact to happen, and two people knowing each other does not mean one of them cannot sexually assault the other.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
25 Apr 14 UTC
Yeah, krellin, you touch on all the points why I think the consent thing is a bit much for practical use. Not to mention no woman has ever or likely will ever ask my consent. If it raises campus awareness though, and if college kids ask permission before they stick it in, I think it's generally an OK thing. Just don't try to tell people it's sexual assault if you don't comply.
SYnapse (0 DX)

Two IU players busted for underage drinking, one I know well. I guess the shocking part of their arrests is that the police in B-town are such assholes that they go around hunting for underage drinkers on Little 500 Day.

So, one of my courses this semester is about "contemporary issues" and one of the issues I'm supposed to debate during our final is whether Woody Allen deserved the lifetime achievement award given to him by the Golden Globes. I've been assigned to argue on the side that he should not have gotten the award. And I want to hear what the people of WebDip think. Source links in the thread.
