This is obviously a False Flag, engineered precisely to get American Jews up in arms and taking a side as obiwan is doing. Modern governments (particularly the descendants of the statistics-obsessed Soviet Union) already force all their subjects to register themselves, including their religion, income, property, etc. All of this information is already in the hands of the government, there's no need to try and re-collect any of it. But the PR value of the symbolism of this story is worth millions to those trying to get America to intervene.

I agree with Tolstoy. There's similar coverage at the Times of Israel. I have not heard of any anti-Semitic rhetoric coming from eastern Ukrainians thus far. Hitler didn't just escalate to a step like this. There was lots of hate rhetoric preceding it.

i think any comparisons of putin to hitler, russia to nazi germany, or these actions to the actions of the nazis, are not only nonsensical, but offensive. just my two cents. putin, generally speaking, for a country not without anti-semitism, has been quite good at standing up for the jewish community.

If we had to move everytime there was something that was potentially anti-semitic the only place we would be able to live is Israel. I really don't see this as such cause for 200,000 people to abandon their homes....

Thanks YJ. I think even if we said these actions are troubling, to put it on Putin is something else - even if he encouraged their uprising, to say he encouraged this is a huge leap. If anything, Putin is far too smart to have wanted something like this.

And obi, you can agree with whatever article you want, but I hope you're not so naieve as to think that the NY Times is a completely objective source of news.

Right, because no one would ever claim to be part of an organization and do misdeeds in its name in order to discredit it. And the officials of the Ukrainian separatist government completely forgot about the history of anti-Jewish pogroms and the Holocaust and utterly missed the connection this action would make in the minds of the world. And they must've misplaced all the government records as well, where all this stuff is already recorded.

If this story had any real truth to it, the reporters would've called the Donetsk city hall (or whatever they call it over there) and asked to interview the official(s) who handles Jewish Registrations. I've got $50 that says there isn't one.

Jews should ALL to go israel or Jew York......or face the consequences.
