Wisdom or Rubbish? A Thread for Evaluating Famous One-Line Nuggets of Advice.
Post your favorite--or most hated--one-line maxim or saying or quote or *insert another synonym here.*

The next person to post will then say what they think of your posted saying, ie, Wisdom or Rubbish and why, and post their own little one-liner. Repeat until hell freezes over (or we get bored...or we devolve into a name-calling contest...whichever comes first...ha, as if it's a question which will come first...)

Rank falling dramatically
So, one day my rank said that I was in the top 62% and I was considered a member... but then randomly it fell to the top 92% and now I'm a casual player. I didn't draw, win, lose, survive, or resign any games in between this period. Why did this happen?

Draws in PPSC
I was wondering to myself why the pot is split evenly in a PPSC draw. I thought it would make more sense, and make things more interesting, if the draw ended the game and dealt out the points each player is currently "worth" in the game.

SoW for gunboat players
Hamster...have you thought about opening a school for gunboat as it is almost entirely a different strategy?

I could be a student in the gunboat one and a professor in the regular one :P

I could be a TS in a gunboat SoW. I've got most of my experience in gunboat.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
17 Jan 14 UTC
A TA rather. It's kind of funny how bad I am at regular games, I should probably be a student in the regular thing. :/

I'd TA a gunboat game.

I'm with peterwiggin. I'm hopeless at Gunboat. Maybe Lando and Ronkonkoma can teach us the ways.
Vallk (904 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
This sounds intriguing. Would it work the same way that FP SoW does? It seems as though professor commentary would have a greater affect than in a full press game.
Anyhow, this sounds interesting.
LordDavion (265 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
I would love to watch something like that and see the professor commentaries.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
This is really interesting! One of the things I'm considering putting in to my EoG for the Fall SoW game is how much closer FP is to gunboat than I had previously thought - since moves (eg Austria's fleet build) still communicate a lot to the rest of the board, and sometimes press can't cover for it. But, looking at the opinions here, it looks like top level players see them as very different games still.

I'd definitely be up for being a student in this!
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
Maybe to avoid Vallk's concerns, the professor commentary could lag behind by a year?
achillies27 (100 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
Hey guys, i think im still pretty high on the GR rankings for gunboat.... Ill TA or whatever if you guys decide to do this.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
17 Jan 14 UTC
Tin Can's suggestion is good. Commentary should be a season or a year delayed, while TA advice could still be normal.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
17 Jan 14 UTC
One idea could be that TAs discuss with their students during each spring whatever strategy they deem necessary, and no discussion happens during the Fall move. This would force the TA's to try to help the students plan to react to the Spring moves and determine the Fall moves on their own.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
17 Jan 14 UTC
Well, aren't the TA's supposed to be help at all stages? That's how it works in the regular ones, right? It's a teaching game.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
17 Jan 14 UTC
I guess so, feel free to completely ignore that.

I tried this once, don't make the mistake of asking Split to be a professor. I'd advise Gen Lee, who kindly took over after Split stopped posting, and did a fantastic job of instructing the students.
ssorenn (0 DX)
17 Jan 14 UTC
I don't know how much time people want to put into this but maybe you could run two games with people at different skill levels ,one normal and one where the TAs only help in spring

So far, we have:

TA:

I think rdrivera was joking about needing help playing Turkey and doesn't belong as a student. He'd be a great TA.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
17 Jan 14 UTC
Oh. Well then, switch him I guess.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
Lmao, rdrivera2005 is ranked 37 in Gunboat on the GhostRating's. I don't think he needs too much help.

Players should not get to pick their countries, Although TAs should, players should be a random draw
thehamster (3263 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
Lol this isn't actually happening
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
17 Jan 14 UTC
It certainly could if there was a good gunboater willing to host it.
I think this is a great idea! Because playing gunboats on my own definitely isn't helping me figure anything out...
peterwiggin (15158 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
Gen. Lee would be a great professor, but he seems to be taking some time away from the site. It'd be nice if Roko or Barnett would be a professor, as they're both insanely good.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
17 Jan 14 UTC
ssorenn's suggestion of random countries for the players (but TA's assigned a country) allows it to be an anon game, which would work well.

NFL Pick 'em--PLAYOFF EDITION...12 TEAMS, 1 GOAL...IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!
The Chargers are the last team standing in that crazy race for the 6th seed in the AFC. Aaron Rodgers rained all over Da Bears' parade, leading the Pack to victory and setting up another classic Niners/Packers clash...only this time, at Lambeau Field. A typical Cowboys/Eagles clash ended in the typical Cowboy way...but it was Orton throwing the season-ending pick this time. The NFC: SEA, CAR, PHI, GB, SF, NO. The AFC: DEN, NE, CIN, IND, KC, SD. The Playoffs...PICK 'EM!
