Short Story of the Day
Hi! I am starting a new thread where I will post a new short story each day this week (each business day, anyway). I am hoping people will read and (if inclined) discuss the stories.

So, the following is my first forum discussion in the intro to business practice...
The topic of this forum thread was "Is Wal-Mart's business practices good or fair? Both or neither?"

the liberals will probably like my response and the conservatives hate it, but I think it will be an interesting discussion for us here and I got to refer back to a HuffPo article listed here sometime back. So COOL!

Of Twerking and Terrible, Terrible Pop Songs--What Do We Pay Attention To?
So until today I was blissfully unaware of what the VMAs even were, let alone (Facebook jokes aside) what happened there with a certain Ms. Cyrus and...you know, forgoing all of...that (though really, WTF?!) I'd rather ask another question--assuming that most here likewise couldn't care less about Ms. Cyrus or Mr. Bieber or *Insert Pop Icon For the Masses Here*...what DO we care about, and why does the majority gravitate to these things we raise eyebrows at?

Is it sexist when...
...your professor, a woman, asks *everyone* in the class to post an introduction then posts public responses *only* to the women in the class?

So far, not a woman has been missed, and not a man has been replied to.

I'm concerned about the class, nothing more. In my other class, I already went through the first week's assignment and got a perfect score on the Week 1 exam. Not like it was hard, but it's still something.

Draugnar, I think you gave your teacher the wrong email address, I saw this message this morning...

Dear draugnar - your introduction was by far the best I've ever seen and I'm sure you will prove to be the greatest student I've ever had the pleasure to teach and by the way I think you're very handsome.

Yeah yeah yeah, whatever Maniac. As long as the grading is far and equitable, I don't give a fuck if she ever writes me. I'm concerned about a pattern of only writing to women, not me personally.

In all seriousness I'd try speaking to her or her line manager. When my son was 10 he told me that he thought his new teacher only picked girls to answer the questions and he'd stopped putting his hand up. I spoke to his teacher about this and she was shocked. Her initial response was that my son always had his hand up and it was her job to spread it around. A little while later she told me she had reassessed her actions and could see how it could be interpreted as if she was favouring the girls. She was a new teacher and I thought it took a lot for her to look again at her actions.

She may have had something in her psyche or background that made her, in her eyes, think she was rebalancing girls opportunities. Her attitude could have been Unconscience sexism, sometimes people just need a gentle nudge to look again at their actions.

I'll just give it time and see if she replies to any of the men who introduce themselves next time she is online. "Observe and collect" will be my motto, much like "trust but verify".

I have enough reading to do for the first week of this class anyhow (84 pages) plus a 2-3 page paper answering the following questions:

Which economic system is best suited for handling a crisis of epic proportion (hurricane, flood, blizzard, forest fire, and so forth)? Why? (10 D)

Describe and explain why a socialist system might be the best in responding to the needs of people struck by an emergency situation like the earthquake that occurred in Haiti in January 2010. (10 D)

Use the laws of supply and demand to explain why the cost to heat our homes and businesses goes up in the winter time. Be sure to explain your answer fully. (10 D)

And no, I don't want any help. I'm here to learn and part of learning is doing the work.

Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Sep 13 UTC
@Eden - That's why I haven't started it yet. The second questions is decidedly bent towards Socialism and more or less answers what the professor expects out of the first question which then begs the questions of "what is the correct answer for the third question as she clearly has socialist leanings?"

These questions combined with the potential sexism has me a little concerned for my future in this specific class and as it is vital to my management degree...
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Sep 13 UTC
@philcore - I'm +1ing that. It was quite humorous even at my own expense.
#3 is a straightforward just-the-facts-ma'am question, I doubt you have anything to look for there

Does anyone have a good reference to APA style in-text citations? The link the professor provided is broken and this is the first class for which I have needed it. It's my first session and the other class is a technical one. Not one with theories one must present in papers, but labs one must complete to show proficiency.

"not to sidetrack this too much but what do you do if you legitimately believe the answer to #2 is "it isn't and never will be""
and then go on a 4 page rant explaining why socialism sucks.

@Eden - I'll finish the reading first. It may be an assertion made by the text so easily answered and expanded upon with bullshit I don't believe. I've no problem arguing a position I don't believe. I'll just pretend I'm trolling here but take the ad hominem and foul language out of it. :-)

Funnily enough, I've never had a problem with teachers not commenting on things I say or noticing my responses...

;)

Though if I may ask--what are the dynamics of your class, how many Males vs. Females?

I know in my Lit classes there are usually more women than men, and women are often more vocal than men in those classes, so they get more responses (except for me...I'm special! ...But anyone who's read my messages knows that already...and is in desperate need of something better to read.) :p

So maybe it's just that there are more women/she's used to women being the more vocal?
krellin (80 DX)

Of course it is sexists, you silly White Male. But discrimination against your particular sub-group is *fully* acceptable.

ON a *very* serious note, it is *absolutely* sexist, and she *absolutley* should be called out on it - as this may affect your education - you are paying for the same class, and deserve the same **feedback** - such feedback, we assume, which is intended to better your education.

Call her out.

I will be leaving this site (for now)
There is a very obvious reason associated with this, specifically that we are discussing the same thing over and over again, and not getting anywhere. I certainly enjoyed my time on this forum, but now I am moving on to a Traditionalist Catholic forum (http://catholicforum.fisheaters.com) because it sounds like a fun trolling project and I can't let Sbyvl get away from me. If you wish to contact me, you can't, because phones didn't exist in 1625 and that's the time I live in.
