Arguing vs. Debating
Arguing is about bluster whereas debate is more about learning, than it is necessarily impressing the other side with how awesome your beliefs are.

Discuss.

Your favorite Avalon Hill style table top paper-cardboard-and-dice game?
A question for the old folks out there.
I don't remember the name of it, probably D-Day. Boxed, AH style. Covered Normandy invasion and reconquest of France. Played that over and over again back in the day. Good times.

I liked a Yaquinto game called "shooting stars". For the time, it was a great space combat simulation.

Wasn't cardboard cutouts, but Feudal was a great chess like game for multiple players. I also enjoyed Panzer Blitz and Advanced Squad Leader.
You said Avalon Hill "style" so I offer you Star Fleet Battles. A board game set in Kirk's era of the Star Trek universe. I first played it 30 years ago and it is the best game of that style that I have ever played.

There are also several computer games based on the board game that were released about 10 years ago. "Star Fleet Command II: Empires at War" is the best of these. It will even run under Win7, with a little effort.

SFB was an incredible game and Star Trek Online actually uses aspects of the combat (like energy conservation and refresh times between operations and such) in it's game play.

Panzer Blitz.

Too bad you don't live near Cinci, dipplayer. I stillhave my copy and we could play.

My vote's with Panzerblitz. The computer game was also great. I also purchased, but no longer own, the Games Research verion of Diplomacy. Has some real knock-down drag-out face-to-face games.Remember Battle Cry and Guadalcanal? Guadalcanal had those cool game pieces.

Chicago? Pittsburg? St. Louis? Where you at?
Not exactly the same genre, but I love Illuminati. Steve Jackson games all seem to have a quirky sense of humor that I like. Munchkin is good too.

Advanced Squad Leader - best game ever.
Russian Campaign.
Submarine.
Wooden Ships and Iron Men.
Luftwaffe.

Ahhhhn....such fond memories of war gaming in its hay day...

I never did play Advanced Squad Leader. Wish I had discovered it. But I did play Combat Mission religiously when it came out. Yeah, not table top, but surely inspired by ASL.

Cosmic Encounter is my favorite. Mayfair edition. Not the crappy Avalon Hill version.

I still have all of my Star fleet Battles stuff from forever ago. That was the best game ever. I would play right now if I had someone to play with.

Ok...here's a blast from the past. Does anyone remember The Creature that Ate Sheboygan? LOVED that game. Fun and quick.
The Creature that ate Sheboygan was cool. I liked Snit's Revenge too, another quick one.
Oh and Kingmaker was fun.

I just bought a copy of "Settlers of Catan" and it's fun too.

Settlers is a good game -- we have bought a coupld of the expansions and I definitely enjoy.

If you like Settlers, you might like Agricola and El Grande as well.
krellin (80 DX)

Dominion as well, but that is a "build your deck" game (but everyone starts out with nothing, and you have equal access to all the same cards - so it is a "strategy" game)

Settlers, Agricola, El Grande and Dominion are all good games, but aren't really of the style asked for originally.

Other games I enjoy include Android: Netrunner and Twilight Struggle

Used to play AH Arab Israeli wars. It was tactical, based on the PanzerBlitz model.

Great fun.

I played Arab Isreali wars - you wonder if a company could even get away with publishing that game these days without pissing someone off.

Titan! My vote for a classic AH game goes to the fantasy monster slugathon.
VirtualBob (224 D)
22 Jul 13 UTC
I give you ...
AH Battle of the Bulge
AH Midway (though too abstract ... the SPI Solomon Islands variant was good, too)
original SPI Arab/Israeli conflicts (the June 6 day war variant was best)
SPI Modern Battles Quad (especially Chinese farm & Wurzburg)
SPI Civil War Quad (especially Shiloh)
SPI Napoleonic Quad (especially Wagram)
SPI World War I (but only if you have a lot of patience ... the 'real' gunboat)
AH Guadalcanal
AH Afrika Korps (with suspended belief in reality)
VirtualBob (224 D)
22 Jul 13 UTC
I think the Arab/Israeli game I am referring to was actually entitled "Sinai"
VirtualBob (224 D)
22 Jul 13 UTC
Should probably add the SPI WW2 Quad as well, though 'Bastogne' (the Bulge variant) was disappointing.

Question on new Americas' variant - 34 to solo?
Anyone have any idea why it is 34 SCs to solo? There are only about 58 or 59 SCs altogether so just wondering why the threshold isn't lower.

American game in need of people.
There is currently an American game titled "The Great War for Texornia" that has five spaces left. The five people currently listed do know each other. Alliances and enemies however, will be made under circumstance and not pre-game relationships. Please take that into account if you sign up. The toll is 15 D and the ps is turner.

Carlos Danger!
Anthony Weiner - Racist Sexist Liberal? Uses Hispanic-sounding name "Carlos" while trolling for sex and spreading images of his namesake. And clearly insults all Hispanics by attaching "Danger" to his Hispanic alias...lol Too funny!

What activist do you hate the worst
Activists of all political stripes are some of the most annoying and intelligence reducing people on earth. Name your most hated activist.

Right at the moment, I'm thinking Julian Assange. His pathological narcissism only serves to flimsily mask his profound idiocy.

Gen Con Indy 2013!
This will be my first Gen Con, and I am very excited. I already signed up to be in as many diplomacy games as possible, are there any other games, similar to diplomacy, that I should look into? Ive been searching for an online multiplayer type game that involves controlling ones armies in actual battle. Does anyone know of any good ones?

Who the World Reads the Most: UNESCO'S Top 50 Authors (Shakespeare #3!) ;)
http://www.unesco.org/xtrans/bsstatexp.aspx?crit1L=5&nTyp=min&topN=50
Note this list doesn't count "group" works (see: The Torah, Koran, Bible, etc., which were either written over centuries or...erm, God, and putting HIM on the list just isn't fair, :p ) but still, for all our literature discussions, it's interesting to see who gets translated the most and thus, arguably, is the most widely-read (in one sense)...Shakespeare at #3 I can see, but some of these are ODD...

Games being force processed in New Variant Gunboat Series
Although we started the games in the New Variant Gunboat Series with the now defunct rule of wait mode, some people have completely taken advantage of it. I am advancing the games that are overdue by at least 5 days tomorrow night. If you want to make your moves, please do so now. Thanks.

When you quote a sentence, then end the sentence the quote is in, does the start of the sentence the quote is in start with a capital or not?
So is it: "No." he said
Or is it: "No." He said.
Or is it something else?

Draws
I have just started playing Diplomacy. I have noticed draws are very common. Games with nearly destroyed players drawing. Is that mind set of most players going into the game. "I'm going to draw". I tend to vote draw allot being new and wanting to just not die. Can threads add a poll. It would be fun to see how many players go for draw vs victory as a pregame goal.

Need some help here...
I submitted orders correctly, double checked them, saved etc... and the game somehow misinterpreted them or didn't operate correctly and instead of getting an SC, I got bounced. Is there anyway to fix this short of coming to some agreement with the players in the game?

World Cup Minnows
Seeing as the CONCACAF Gold Cup is underway, and all football eyes aimed at Brazil next year, I'm wondering if this may be the year for CONCACAF, AFC, or CAF to finally break thru and win the big one. What's your take? Which country poses the biggest threat to CONMEBOL and UEFA's dominance next year?
