Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
I hope everyone noticed this game. Just look at the map, and then look at who won.

Also nice that first tiebreaker is to play two more games. Much better than a one-game tiebreaker.

Well, I made a pretty critical mistake by convoy spa-tun 03s in that game, too bad to rescue...RoganJosh wrote: ↑Wed May 13, 2020 7:28 amI hope everyone noticed this game. Just look at the map, and then look at who won.

Challonge is updated and PMs for the next round have been sent out!
Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
For future iteration of this (and other) tournaments, we should not use coin flips, but we should use one round of odd vs. even: TD decides that player A wins if odd and player B wins if even. After that, both players submit either the number 0 or the number 1 in a PM to the TD. The total sum of the submitted numbers decides the winner.captainmeme wrote: ↑Wed Mar 18, 2020 8:05 pmIf it is another 3 or 4 way tie, advancements will be decided by coin flip
This is more in spirit with the game...

Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
The tournament is over! SvkrIs successfully defeats reigning champion RoganJosh 2-0 to take the title, and wins 1000 webDip points in the process.
You can find the finals games here:
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=312724
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=312725
And the final tournament results either on the webDip Tournaments Page, or on the Challonge page:
http://webdiplomacy.net/tournaments.php?tab=Finished
https://webdiplomacy.challonge.com/Spring2020CL
Congrats svkrIs! And thank you to everyone who participated - it was great to see so many high quality games and to see the tournament scene for FvA being brought back :D I'm planning to run the Fall Champion's League this year as well (probably in about a month), so keep an eye out for that if you're interested!

Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
I know that IvG is not as fun as FvA, but maybe do IvG in the fall and FvA in the spring? Or alternating years...captainmeme wrote: ↑Tue Aug 04, 2020 11:58 amI'm planning to run the Fall Champion's League this year as well (probably in about a month), so keep an eye out for that if you're interested!

Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
My concern with GvI has always been that it's quite Germany-sided, so a lot of the matchups might just be determined by who rolls Germany in the tiebreaker. But, I'm very inexperienced in GvI in general so I'm not sure how true that is.
Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
Maybe a matchup is 2 simultaneous games? Each player takes G in one game?captainmeme wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 2:56 pmMy concern with GvI has always been that it's quite Germany-sided, so a lot of the matchups might just be determined by who rolls Germany in the tiebreaker. Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
Ooopss... Hello... Somebody talked about GvI ?

Well... I have just been crushed by a "newbee in GvI" (but a player with a lot of talent) while I was playing Germany. Maybe I was too confident but he surprised me with a move that I didn't expect and it was too late. It was not really luck. He surprised me and fully deserves his victory.... that it's quite Germany-sided,
It is clear that it is different from FvA. FvA is more mathematical in thinking about all possibilities and managing the control of the key territories in optimizing ressources. GvI has a big battlefield in the Balkans with numerous flip coins but the challenge is more a movement games in the other places. Italy can decide to push all its ressources towards England and Germany can hardly prevent this. Globally Germany remains favored BUT if Germany decides not taking risks, it should lose. An interesting point is that there is not real equivalent to the Austrian rush strategy for Germany in GvI.
There is nevertheless a problem in GvI that I discussed here : GvI balance....
Some options were discussed regarding this. We can add G and I territories from both games to decide who wins in case of 1-1, or check who won the fastest globally....so a lot of the matchups might just be determined by who rolls Germany in the tiebreaker. But, I'm very inexperienced in GvI in general so I'm not sure how true that is.
Re: Spring 2020 1v1 Champions League
I think Germany can actually win as early as 2005. Germany just need to take England earlier than usual.
Also, there is an opening variation where Germany sends his first year army builds to the Balkans with virtually no risk. While I don't have a lot of games with that move order, I think Germany should be favoured.
