You said it a couple of times, yes, asking why would they claim and then ignoring the answers. You also never specified *which* claims you find especially scummy, you are always very vague, no specifics. And what other scummy things have the claimants done to deserve the suspicion? I can understand ignoring the claims altogether, but I can't understand how a claim is by itself a reason for suspicion.
