If Crusader comes back on, and does both of the votes Damo did, I'm starting a crusade. Just against him. In Real Life
Now you wouldn't want to tempt me would you. ;) %%VOTE NO-LYNCH
Pfft. So this is terrible. I think no one should get to play the n00b card this hard. ##vote cru

It took him how many tries to get the vote correctly, and then he finally gets it right with a winkey face when someone starts to call him on it? Here's what I'm seeing: maf has a secretary. Cruaader is on the scumteam. he's new. whomever is secretary says: "hey, play the newbie card really hard. like... mess up some votes and such. don't engage in anything real, just... mess up some mechanics and complain about how big the game is. Plenty of town will be doing that too, and you'll slide by on a newbie card."
I realize this is far from ironclad but the level of specificity in this quote and teacon's total clarity and precision in discussing the mafia's options bothers me. If I didn't know any better I would think teacon is mafia, Cruaader is mafia, and that's literally a direct quote from their secretary.
Luckily I know better... do I?
How come this guy is so on-point in analyzing what the mafia could plausibly be doing but he can't get to precise conclusions about how to kill? His votes so far have been a lame parking on MoscowFleet and a lame theory that Cruaader is playing up a newbie act.
Very uncompelling stuff for someone who has made such a big show of pointing things out and asking questions.

^^for the record I don't actually think things went down like I just said. That would be some egregious styling on us.
Plus I have a hunch Cruaader is town.

PART III

We're pretty much done. The biggest posters are mostly out of the way now. This one will also cover most of the last high volume posters. Everyone else got a late start to the game and only one of them is someone I'd consider a high volume poster.

Durga:

Comments how early the start to the game is as an opener, and you know what I agree in every possible sense this could be taken. Durga's posts are short overall, and it looks like she was also doing gut reads. She says Squigs is town for saying Fox is town, Flav is scum if there's a daychat, Moscow is scum, connor is town because teacon thinks otherwise.

She joins Balki in his critiques of Flavius, specifically his comment that Balki is "smart and experienced" and his list. She thinks it's weird that teacon is trying to be funny and criticizes Moscow saying teacon should be concise because "at least teacon posts, yknow?" When Squigs says he considers Flavius his top scumread but won't vote for him, Durga notes it as strange.

She notes Balki is tunneling on Flavius for his post with the list and thinks it's more town Balki. Balki asks her if she knows what roles are on the scum team, and her response implies she isn't really sure. She doesn't like Chippe "spamming the thread" in the earlier part of his VT debacle. When Tom votes for him, Durga says she likes him when he "plays with fire" and then she and Tom joke a bit.

Squigs gutreads Tom as town in his post about not wanting to seem desperate for attention, and Durga seems to think that's a weird way to read that post because he cast it worrying about how people might see him.

Durga clarifies a bit about the daychat stuff, and when it's explained she seems more adamant to hear an explanation from Flavius about the "smart and experienced" comment, especially since Flavius and Balki never played together. She criticizes Percy's Jailer jokes as being unhelpful. She seems annoyed with Chippe but says she doesn't think he's scum and then policy votes for him. She reads Carl as strong town because of the way he tries to end the Chippe debate and casts an endvote to try and hammer Chippe and be done with it.

She says she's ignoring ND because she'd rather not get baited into a fight but says she townreads him. After a GM Post, she switches her vote to MoscowFleet for being lurky, which she says he does as scum. She also says she'd be fine doing it as a policy lynch. She also says she wants the meta to be more clearly anti-lurk.

She brings her attention back to Flavius and asks him again about the "smart and experienced" comment and calls out his list as "sus" and when Flavius answers Durga dulls a bit and starts thinking maybe he's town. She explains to Balki that she thinks it'd be word for scum to tell to Flavius and for him to repeat it, and she says she likes Percy's defense of Flavius based on the last game.

She still seems annoyed with Chippe and his antics, even when it's not about the VT debate and says she thinks Tom is town. She joked that she thought xorxes was scum earlier but when asked her thoughts on him all she says is he's MIA. She says I'm town because of the long post. Squigs goes after Tom for "not solving" and Durga defends Tom by saying "defending and town reading someone is as much solving as scum reading someone is". She argues against the no lynch from Cruaader.

A lot to talk about because she posts and says a lot, so it's kinda weird that a lot of it just doesn't stand out to me. I can pull the occasional quote but it's always short.

QUESTIONS:

Why are your posts so short?
What about Percy's post did you like?
What are your thoughts on Percy in general?

teacon7:

Yeah, based on the interactions I've had with him not looking forward to this read. He opens with joke posts and asks why Foxy doesn't want people to do it, suggesting Foxy is just aiming for town cred. He asks people about their previous games over and over, and brings up M1007 several times. He criticizes Flavius based on it then asks why he's anti-joke phase (which after the first time I don't consider a real question anymore).

He votes for Moscow because of "wounded pride" and mocks Squigs for "not liking greentext" before asking him also about his experience in Mafia. He tells connor he "hopes [connor] like[s] reading." When Squigs says he doesn't think new scum would be as bold as connor, teacon says he thought it was an attempted towntell.

He goes on to ask Squigs more and more about his experience in depth, specifically about the gut read and its accuracy before asking a few players weird questions.
@Nephthys
Do you like joke phases? Why?
Do you always play like this?
Do you prefer playing scum or town?
@CruaaderReynauld
@Carl Tuckerson
@ChippeRock

Welcome! I've not played a game with you before, so... I just have a couple questions:
[*]Have you played this kind of game before?
[*]If so, in what format (online, live, etc)?
[*]If so, do you you prefer to play as mafia or town?
[*]Are you secretly a Balki clone, because he's a lot of C-words?
That last question being obviously a joke followed by an exclusively joke post got me pretty fed up with the way teacon was carrying himself. We bicker and he accuses me of being anti-joke phase, even though I opened the game with joke posts.

He says he thinks the Moscow quote directed at him was weird but he takes it kind of weird.
You're right that it makes me hard to read. Don't you think that a more verbose scum!teacon would be more likely to slip, and therefore better for town?
It feels defensive and almost... offended?

He defends his town morale comment from Foxy by saying that and victory aren't mutually exclusive. He keeps the same handful of conversations going, and it feels like it's just small talk or bickering. He then starts making a doc for commenting while rereading. Even this stuff feels inconsequential or defensive. He chimes in on the Chippe debate by being... almost supportive? He's trying to hint to everyone about what Chippe could be doing. Leaves, comes back, asks about who speaks English as a secondary language. He keeps talking about the Chippe stuff then tells everyone to stop talking about it.

Asks why Fox wants to stick with lurkers and what he thinks about other possibilities, then asks bozo (???) his thoughts on lurker policy.

He tries to defend himself from Balki by suggesting he's not being smarmy (he is) and EVEN IF HE WAS that's not alignment indicative. Which, I mean maybe but it's incredibly annoying. His point about not "loading accusations into his questions" also seems odd. He goes on to both push Flavius and defend him all in one. He does the same thing with Cruaader by saying he's town then IMMEDIATELY saying he's scum in the same post.
Oh okay I see what you did. Spread out, sure. But by effectively quoting without timestamps, you're removing the timeframe from the quotations. I'm looking at those quotes from me and thinking: "wow, those were all early d1. Why'd he stop there?"
It's 2 am and I hate this. Directs Balki back to M1007 then asks why people are asking about Blind Assassin. Which is a shockingly good question. He asks bozo again about his thoughts on a policy lynch, so it seems like he really cares about a policy lynch, but then defends himself saying he wouldn't push for one, which seems stupid to me. When the Cruaader debacle happens he says:
It took him how many tries to get the vote correctly, and then he finally gets it right with a winkey face when someone starts to call him on it? Here's what I'm seeing: maf has a secretary. Cruaader is on the scumteam. he's new. whomever is secretary says: "hey, play the newbie card really hard.
It's 2 am and I still hate this

QUESTIONS:

Why did you mix so many fake questions into your early play?
Why do you think M1007 is so absolutely vital to this game?
Do you think Cruaader using an emoji is alignment indicative?
What's the point of asking a lurker if they want to policy lynch lurkers?

ND:

Paying respects to the calm and analytical ND I co-GM'd with once. He seems upset by the volume of posts and I can't exactly blame him. I am the one to blame for this. His posts consistently have a mocking tone now. Not much substance to him until he says Chippe is either dumb or leaning so hard into being VT that he's scum. His big post with his reasons for his reads is... unconvincing. The Foxy argument in particular I find weak because it's based on him contradicting himself but I don't really see a contradiction there. Then he goes all in on Cruaader.

It's scary how he doesn't quite seem like a low-volume poster but when you look back at his posts he's brought so little substance to the table.

QUESTIONS:

Why are 60% of your posts to or about Chippe?
What are your overall thoughts on people other than him and Cruaader?

xorxes:

Remembers only HALF of our Avalon games. I was Merlin twice and was only caught in one of them. Says teacon and Flavius are scummy but doesn't elaborate much. Sparks the Chippe debate by asking him to explain his role PM post. Very active in the early part of the debate and votes for Chippe. Continues this even when regular debate ends by suggesting he could've been fishing for PR's. Votes for Percy for the comment about how Chippe could've been acting as Blind Assassin.

QUESTIONS:

Thoughts on issues not related to Chippe?
Why is that the only basis of your participation except when others ask you?

EspressoPatronum:

Unimpressive is probably the first word that comes to mind. Before rereading I couldn't even tell you this guy was in the game, but he's not exactly a lurker. Similar to xorxes in that his posts largely reflect participation in the Chippe debate but he REALLY doesn't contribute. Almost like he wants to seem part of it but doesn't know what to say. I don't like it. Votes for Chippe for being defensive, bringing it up to a 5 person wagon. Once the debate dies down (with Espresso still voting for Chippe). Now he moves to defending teacon as town. In response to Balki's case on teacon as smarmy, EP says
Interesting points, but I don't agree bcz I think his play is consistent with last game.

Can you look at his D1 posts of m1007 and tell me if his posts there are smarmy?
I'm bugged and upset. Especially since he's trying to hinge on the exact some faulty logic as teacon while trying not to draw attention to it.

QUESTIONS:

Do you still think Chippe is scum?
Why are you so ready to dismiss a whole case based exclusively on meta?

ChippeRock:

Since this is the last person with more than 70 posts at this time, finishing this will be a sigh of relief. I was part of his wagon. I've been asked to explain my vote a few different times because at the time of voting I didn't and then a few other times pretty much refused to explain it. Not explaining it was part of the point. Partially I didn't like his behavior with posts like "I refuse to answer that. I guess I had to post something as my 2nd post without any reads" because he says he won't answer but answers in the same breath. It's superficial but it's just strange. The VT thing rubbed me the wrong way in general, and when I voted for him he was getting questions but I felt wasn't being properly pressured because he wasn't at threat of being in the lead. That was a decent portion of it, but I also wanted to see people respond to him being a wagon.

After I voted for him a lot of people jumped on him REAL quick, and in the future I think it'll be plenty worthwhile to keep track of who was on that wagon. I'm going to ignore everything he says about the VT debate because it's come up plenty of times in other rereads already and we all know what happened. He was so central to it that rehashing it here would be a waste of time, which cuts down like half his posts.

He's pretty aggressive in defending himself and others. He considers Squigs as someone who shoots for easy bandwagons so votes for him. When it's pointed out to him Squigs was the genitor of the wagons in question he says that he was visibly getting heat so Squigs was still just bandwagoning, though I'd point out Squigs was one of the people giving said heat. He's afraid of sounding OMGUS and points to bozo as lurking and only targeting him so he's confused as to why Moscow is the one getting heat for it.

He recommends Cruaader vote no lynch instead of abstaining, and Balki calls him out for just presuming Chippe as town, not reading him simply taking it as fact. He defends himself saying that Cruaader is new and everyone is doing it regarding new players. Which is not true.

He votes bozo until he says "something meaningful" and calls bozo out for only having one read. He goes on to defend Moscow and continue a defense against Cruaader. On this last point he goes so far as to vote for me for... voting for Cruaader? He then seems adamant that ND and I are on the scum team together. He barely interacted with me or ND before this, so his accusations seem to come mostly out of nowhere. He treats it as obvious, then switches to ND and then tells Squigs that the idea is to random lynch. I hate everything about this.

QUESTIONS:

When and why did you start thinking I was scum?
When and why did you start thinking ND was scum?
Why are you so sure that Cruaader is town that you're seemingly willing to make scum reads based off of it?
Do you have any reads similar to that?

It's 3:30 am, I have 5 players left, and I just want to go to bed. All that's left are Tom, bozo, rdrivera, damo, and Cruaader. I'd venture to say none of the middle 3 have had any realistic impact on the game, and the biggest one to look at will be Tom. Good night.

##UNVOTE in my late night thoughts I remembered the second criterion of How to Read New Players 101 and realized I may have blown my load a bit early. The first criterion I think I can explain earlier than the second. But now for that sleep.

Though I will say, I think the comments others have made on my criterion don’t understand what I’m actually looking at, and what about the content of his post is so markingly bad.

Real mafia hours out on the plains.

~

To answer your question earlier, Squigs's analysis improved significantly over the last ~24 hours, as more people started playing and he had more substantive proceedings to analyze; and I also believe I misinterpreted the strength of his initial suspicions of Flavius, which was the source of most of my early misgivings. At multiple times today I found myself reacting the same way he did to an event at the same time I so reacted, such as when we questioned Tom (at one point I literally answered one of Tom's questions by quoting one of Squigs's most recent posts without further comment).

I find that this happens a lot when I am on the right track as town. One of the reasons I pushed back on Squigs's early comment that he is selective with how he uses his vote is that my style is the direct opposite; I tend to find my best townreads by trying and failing to hang them. Hell just this game I've voted to hang three people (Squigs, Chippe, and now you) that I'm now reasonably sure are town. (Though I do need you to finish that analysis before deadline and make a reasonably inspired vote.)

~

Someone fill me in on a meta bit. Many people have alluded to a rift between Durga and ND that borders on legendary. Based on whatever history they have, how likely is it that they truly would set aside that rift for a particular game?
Because it strikes me that a likely explanation for why they have managed to set things aside so gracefully thus far is that they know they're on the same team.

Halfway Thru D1 Readz Pt III: Chirping Chickadee

The meaning of my 4-letter rankings might be changing a bit from post to post. I've never done reads lists like these before so I'm not sure what I want each category to be. I find I need lists for a game this big though.

COOL: Confident these people are town.

Squigs44
Balki Bartokomous
ChippeRock
TrPrado
Carl Tuckerson
FlaviusAetius

PASS: Not confident these people are town, but uncomfortable hanging them.

CruaaderReynauld
et
Percy Williams

WHO?: ??????

EspressoPatronum
xorxes
damo666
Nephthys
rdrivera2005
bozotheclown
MoscowFleet

TCON: Reserved for people I continually promise to reread but never quite get around to rereading.

teacon7

WARY: Not confident these people are mafia, but something isn't sitting right.

Durga
Tom Bombadil
Foxcastle
ND
dargorygel
connorcompton

Some moving and shaking as I've done some rereading. Notables:

1. I have liked TrPrado's effort with his analysis. For me, it is less a question of if he could do this as mafia and more a question of if he would. I don't think he would stay up this late (it's after 4am as I type this out on the plains) to do all this digging just to put on a show of solving. I think he's capable of it, but it just strikes me as inefficient; it's the type of thing that potentially opens him up to a ton of vulnerabilities down the road if he has to reconcile something he said in the >10K words he's written so far on D1 with a fake read he makes on D3, and it's also not going to get him locked in as town either. He can't coast on a big pile of D1 analysis. So while he could have put all this work into a big analysis just to look townie, I think he would have chosen a path of lesser resistance to reach the same end.

2. I reread Percy Williams's posts as promised. They're coming up alright I think. I don't like bozo as a target because his flip is incredibly low-info, but Percy seems to hold the sincere belief that bozo is mafia, which makes Percy look good to me.

3. On a reread of Durga I don't actually remember why I townread HER.* I think I got suckered because she agreed with me a lot and said flattering things about my play, but as I go through her posts again, I'm not turning up much that I really like besides being flattered. A couple of things that are bothering me:
(1) The ongoing non-beef beef she has, or doesn't have? with ND. For how much other people have built it up I find it bizarre that they have not only not delivered on the squabbling but have almost never interacted at all. Durga says that she is deliberately not getting baited into a fight but then immediately throws some shade about ND's skill that, if ND so chose, could have turned into a fight... This is hardly decisive but it's very weird. I have nothing concrete to back up my pet theory that they're partners and that's why it's been so easy for them to avoid fighting and indeed avoid talking to each other much at all, but I'm still kinda feeling it anyway.
(2) I think Balki said it best when he called her play "in the safe zone." She joined me on a policy lynch of ChippeRock for his VT shenanigans and once a mod confirmed nothing nefarious was afoot, she effectively policy lynched MoscowFleet for lurking. Her only other suspect thus far was Flavius, centered entirely on a throwaway comment Flavius made about Balki's experience which was framed as a slip but which I think people correctly realized didn't mean anything... and in any case she never did vote him. For being in the top quarter of posters she's really not produced very much for me to go off of.

(*: mb earlier lol)

4. I still haven't reread teacon7's posts. I'm keeping him in the Foxcastle/dargorygel pile of "people who have talked too much to have left this little of an impression," but with the important caveat, to be fair to him, that in his case the issue might be me.

5. Most of what I said about the Durga-ND relationship applies to ND here too. If anything, ND is even weirder in this respect, because he makes one very casual reference to their feud and even calls out the post where she throws shade at him that I referenced earlier, but in the context of questioning Foxcastle, and doesn't react to her at all. In fact he's only directly engaged Durga twice: once to say he agreed with her frustrated reaction to ChippeRock, and once in a literal "Whatever" reaction to something she said. Again, as noted in my comments on Durga, it's plausible that they are just maturely setting aside whatever this feud is, or that the feud has been overblown and it's really not a big deal; but the way it's been talked up, I would have expected to see sparks flying by now, and if the talking up is accurate, then "they're mafia partners" is a very plausible reason why they've kept it cool.
Additionally, the more I think about the Cruaader/ND thing the less I like ND's pushing it. I don't think it was well rooted. I especially dislike that ND never seemed to consider a very obvious town reason why Cruaader might want to lay low as town. Could just be his style of play, but my first reaction was to try to find out why Cruaader would think lying low would help him and why he cared to survive n1, but ND just plowed ahead without any serious consideration to possible town (especially newbie town) motivations for such behavior.
I'm starting to wonder if the "Cruaader/ND" deal is a good one... the main issue is that they plausibly could both be town. They definitely can't both be mafia, so one flipping mafia would almost certainly clear the other one. But one flipping town would be fairly disastrous because the other would certainly get railroaded into the next kill.

6. connorcompton moved to my suspects list because on a reread his posts sound like new mafia to me. He names two people he suspects, Balki and teacon, but immediately moves to discount the value of his reads ("don't read too much into that," "annoyingly I'm finding it hard to justify"). The other one he seems to suspect is bozo, who might as well have been picked out of a hat from the list of lurkers, and he also discounts the value of that suspicion in the same sentence too ("it's quite early to assume mafia from someone who's hardly posted," but bozo's disinterest in making meaningful posts makes him mafia?).

~~~~
More to the point... we've really got to figure out who we're killing. We have a little over eight hours as of this post and we are not even close to where we ought to be.
Everyone please recap briefly why you are voting for the person you're voting.
#1094 Post by rdrivera2005 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 10:55 am
So, I am 12 pages behind on thread and have a though schedule at work today, so I will cast a ##vote Foxcastle.
I feel I miss answering someone yesterday, but can't look at it right now, so if you (whoever you are) want a fast answer please ask again.
I'm not going to be as detailed with my iso of Durga because she has more posts so I can't go through them all one by one, and because I townread Durga.
The main take away I have from Durga is that she is playing with emotion. She seems genuine in her views and each of her posts seems to have a purpose or clear stance. As scum she finds it difficult to solve, but I don't see that frustration here, she is putting in some decent solving. Her opinions and progression wrt Flav and Chippe match my own and seem natural.
@Durga - Thoughts on Tom and Xorxes?
What?
Durga has said herself that she hates playing as scum because she can't pretend to solve. She likes when there are third parties though since she can still try to solve for who the third party is, so this point is a bit muted by that.
OK I suppose.
He is a new player - he doesn't even know the proper command to vote! If he were a noobie scum, he wouldn't vote for no lynch, he would vote for anybody really. Instead, because he's new to the game, and he doesn't know how to read people, he decided to abstain from the vote. His comment is not a slip, it's more likely an offhand comment in reaction to ND's vote.
Your willingness to lynch someone who's clearly innocent makes you & TrPrado clear partners-in-scum.
I agree that noob scum would not vote no lynch ergo Cruaader ain't Scum. This does not necessarily imply his voters are scum though, just lazy in their thinking.
I catch up thread. And I decide.
##VOTE bozotheclown
I won't change vote unless any big news.
My thought is that.
boz voted Chip because of many plays had voted.
And he don't join any conversation. Just he answered a few questions for him.
Because he don't want to stand out.
He don't make effort to find scum.
He just want to alive.
So, I think he is scum.
And I think we can get information from lynch him.
For example, if he is mafia(not Blind Killer), I will focus on Fox.
Because fox seems to defined boz.
Foxcastle also is caught in a contradiction. He spends a fair amount of time in the 30s asking about other players: “Despite GM'ing Flavius in the last game, I didn't really read anything he posted*” (pp. 29) and “? (I know, it's ironic that I didn't read the game I ran... But I can see it being the cause of him getting so scumread that town lost...)” (pp. 31)
YET he also says, “Why aren’t ND and Durga going at it like battle cats yet?” (pp. 29)
I put this quote last, but this is first sequentially. It’s interesting to me because he leads with this then makes follow up posts stating he didn’t read portions or in the case of quote 31 the game he ran. However, he implies he has knowledge of me and Durga’s arguments by stating the word *yet*. Is this quote about Durga and myself from 29 based on meta or from M1007? If M1007 it’s a fucking huge contradiction and I would argue that it is. Durga-and myself had a game spanning spat that game overshadowed by Teacon v Xorxes. I find it hard to believe he isn’t referencing this and if so why say he didn’t read the game? Well, in the posts he said he didn’t read the game he was asking others for info about players and by mentioning that argument Durga and I had he also says I am a good player which prompts Durga to reply “please”. It drew a reaction from her which could have easily baited one from me too. Maybe I am overthinking these posts but it looks to me as if there is some game playing and contradictions going on here. Fox needs to respond.
Thanks for taking this on for me, Tom.
But to answer for myself: you and Durga fight all the damn time. ALL THE DAMN TIME. You're as bad as Jamiet and Brainbomb. (Not actually, but almost.) So no, it's not based solely on M1007.
And to clarify myself on M1007: I did not ignore my game. When I say I didn't read it, I mean I didn't read it closely the way I would a game I was participating in. Obviously, I had to read it to catch GM calls and be aware of what was generally going on, but I wasn't analyzing. But even skimming, it's easy to catch you and Durga fighting or Xorxes-v-Teacon. Also, the mafia QT provided a lot of perspective that you didn't have in game, for example, on why Flavius was good for mafia to keep around.
And yeah, I'm surprised you gave Durga a pass on calling you out as bad player. Something to note.
