I vaguely recall a player with a name like DesmondOverawed did pretty well. I don't remember any mention of a Durga though, sorry. Were you there too?
Still, not everyone can be as good as Des. What a guy :)

The 500 points would only be for winning, surely?

@dancing queen, on the subject of World Championships, thank you for the 2016 World Diplomacy Championship YouTube series -- very cool!

I have a question about World Championship adjudications.
I've never been to a ftf tournament, but I must say that I was completely surprised how sloppy the adjudication was for a tournament of this caliber. I think there were 3 or more mis-adjudications:
Is it normal for tournament adjudication to be so careless? I would expect better adjudication from any tournament, and especially a World Championship final board. :|

- Austria's illegal retreat to Serbia
- France's fleet move to EngCh when support was actually cut.
- I watched the series a while back and I can't remember the third one.

I mean, you can walk up morning of the event and we will get you on a board.
But the sooner you let us know the better we can plan for the right numbers. We should have registration links up before the end of the month.
In the meantime PM if you are planning on coming! We are really pushing hard for a strong WebDip group this year!

The orders are read so fast every time that the players can barely keep up to move the proper pieces, and then they get moved incorrectly with no one noticing!?! It seems like everyone is too embarrassed that they may be the only one that can't keep up and are afraid to say "slow down, let's make sure everything moves properly". There's even times when the order reader seems to have trouble reading the order, and everyone just assumes a certain order and proceeds.
- I watched the series a while back and I can't remember the third one.

Second, YES, that is how almost all F2F games are adjudicated, and I don't think anyone knows how common such mis-adjudications are. Anecdotally I'd say that one or two mistakes per game wouldn't surprise me; especially if you include player-level mis-orders! The game moves fast and is adjudicated by the entire group together, so in theory everyone has a chance to catch mistakes. Myself, I am particularly prone to sloppy math - I once played two games years -2 units when I was managing the score sheet, and I know I've played turns +1 as well.
THIS year we are planning on having a dedicated staff member to adjudicate the Top Board. We agree that the championship game should at least have a neutral party _trying_ to get the adjudication correct!
There has been some talk of getting an adjudication engine to double check all results for the top board, too - we will see if we can make the technology for that work.

Any transportation to/from airports? Which airport is most accessible on public transportation? And do I have to room with Valis again?

All three major airports will get you there - Reagan National is the one I'd take if you wanted to do public transportation to the event. We will arrange to pick people up at BWI or Dulles, you might have to wait a bit as we want to make less trips. Fewer? Less? I always mess that up.2ndWhiteLine wrote: ↑Sat Feb 10, 2018 10:56 pmAny transportation to/from airports? Which airport is most accessible on public transportation? As for roommates, well, we aren't going to MAKE you do anything. :D

Wow, 3rd place at the 2017 World Championships, Durga -- that's super impressive! Great job!!! I had no idea that we had a webDipper make the final table and place so highly!
Uclabb, what was your 2016 result?
Re: 2018 World Diplomacy Championships - Washington DC

The ones that have been posted are on the World Diplomacy Database
http://www.world-diplomacy-database.com ... /index.php
Which is a lot of fun to play around with if you're into stats and whatnot. Not all events have as much detail as we would like - but we have Top Men working on improving that!
