Well I figured if he thought it was likely to be Sailor Moon he could just have said "Is it Sailor Moon?"

I thought it might be Sailor Moon, but the original question was not meant to be an oblique way of asking if it was her (although it was accidentally phrased in a way that could be interpreted as an attempt as such). I mostly just wanted to pick a date that would exclude a good chunk of the time period left, and picked Sailor Moon's start date since she fit the time zone well.

Then I realized I didn't know anyone else who fit the criteria besides Sailor Moon, so I ended up guessing her anyway.
