Was this person primarily known for studies in any branch of biology or zoology?

Re: 20 Questions 564
I just realized DreamTrawler used an unfree guess, so technically that is Question 20. I'll give you more time for free guesses, and then after I answer Question 20 I'll give you a hint if needed.
I will, however, provide a clarification on some of the science questions: this person is primarily famous for a specific thing that is a result of his scientific studies, but not a typical reason why a scientist would be famous.
SUMMARY
Real male human born in the 19th century in Europe, in the Russian Empire, in an area that would later be part of the Warsaw Pact, but not in what is today Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, or Moldova. Did not die before the first Academy Award on 16 May 1929. Primarily known for zoology, biology, medicine, or psycnology. Never awarded a Nobel Prize. Not primarily known for politics, military, music, opera, theater, poetry, or espionage. Not a native speaker of a Romance language, or Greek.
NOT Trofim Lysenko (DreamTrawler), Sergei Winogradsky (yavuzovic), or Lev Vygotsky (DreamTrawler).

Re: 20 Questions 564
No (counted as a free guess).
20. Yes, taking this to exclude psychology, medicine, and other human-focused sciences.
5 total guesses left.
Your hint is that this person's nationality (as listed on Wikipedia) is of a country that did not exist until after his death.
Re: 20 Questions 564
Since nobody guesses, I will go with Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov, whom doesn't fit the ethnicity associated with a country not yet exists but perfectly fits the rest.
Re: 20 Questions 564
No.
Next hint: his first name is the name of a country.
Sorry this pick is a little obscure, but he did have a profound impact on the world.

Re: 20 Questions 564
Before your guess I was looking for a Jordan, but it was like a desert.
