Based on gimix's clarification, I guess that it's not the "excused missed turns" that bother me, but the lack of what webDip calls "Civil Disorder".JECE wrote: ↑Sun Mar 30, 2025 4:35 pmIt caused issues for some players in game 1, but there have been plenty of NMR's in game 1 in regular 'diplomacy' phases. I found the excused missed turns far more annoying.DougJoe wrote: ↑Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:23 pmThanks for checking in so quickly. Sorry that the 3/1 is throwing you off.stefanodangello wrote: ↑Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:44 amHello! England here. Apparently I haven't yet internalized retreats are shorter.
Somehow it appears I was not kicked out, as I just entered my disband, read press and replied. Hopefully I'll remain in? Unless, of course, any substitution is a request from the other players, though I hope they'll trust me to carry it through from where we are.
Again, asking for your patience on what I've described to many as another attempt at coming back after years out, I'll take steps to ensure it does not happen again, despite retreats and build still catching me off-guard.
From the rest of the players in all the games, how are you finding the 3/1 schedule? Personally, I'm doing fine with it, I like the shorter Retreat/Build phases to keep things moving a bit with the longer negotiation phases, but I could definitely see where one's "rhythm" (for lack of a better word) might be thrown off by the non-constant schedule.

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
I like the 3:1 length. It's helped make sure that we have had mostly good diplomacy each turn even when people have been busy. I haven't minded the many excused missed turns and pauses because I feel more frustrated by games shifting from civil disorders and new players than I do from players being slow.
Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
I feel like three days is already quite long to get press in. In game 1 players seemed to be using the excused missed turns as a diplomatic crutch to give them more time to negotiate when their situation was tough. I don't mind giving folks extra time if they need it, but it seems a bit much to purposely not enter orders.

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
I agree with this. My ideal is to have excused turns to avoid civil disorders, but for people to not think of them as resources to spend for game purposes, if that makes sense. Maybe a bit of the "fouls are part of the game" vs "fouls are transgressions against the game" divide in sports.JECE wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:23 pmI feel like three days is already quite long to get press in. Civil disorders are also part of the game, but they bother me probably 100 times more than game delays do. I normally hate having lots of excused turns because people intentionally NMR out of bad positions to protect their ghost rating, which is more frustrating the longer you have to wait, but that's fortunately not been an issue for us.
Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
The only turn I've ever missed here on WebDip was a "fouls are part of the game" intentional miss because I had a super difficult time deciding what to do on that turn... but someone else had done it in the game previously and since (1) the phases were only 1.5 days and (2) the players all knew each other (2 pairs of siblings, a mutual friend of one pair, two others, all declared before the game started) it didn't seem like a big deal... but I don't think I would do something like that (intentionally miss a turn) again.Theodoric wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 1:17 amI agree with this. At least WebDip has the compromise of always having a 24 hour "reset"... it was pretty awful back when I played on phpDiplomacy through Facebook and a 72 phase length meant another 72 hour phase if someone missed...
All that aside, the global chat in game 1 still been quite amusing.
Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
I like the Extend vote feature from vDip better. It allows some flexibility that neither requires unanimity like a a full pause nor allows unilateral last-minute 'fouls', as you all put it. It's a cleaner solution to the same problem that 'excused missed turns' was introduced to fix.
I posted this in the global chat a while back:
"I think that this is my first game with excused missed turns and variable phase lengths and I have to say I don't like it. It feels like 'wait for orders' mode was turned on. I think that vDip's solution of allowing extend votes is much better. (They pass on a majority vote unlike the other votes that require unanimity.)"

Ah, that's an interesting idea - I've never played on vDip so didn't know about it.JECE wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 8:34 pmI like the Extend vote feature from vDip better. To the fellows of Game 1: Yes, work blocking WebDip is annoying - I mean, come on, don't they know what's *really* important?

Anon identities are automatically revealed at the end of the game
I spectated and held back on some thoughts for most of it, provided some minor ones in this thread. Maybe I will provide some more as an outsider later.
I am slightly curious as to what went on in S1904 and why you tried to help Italy instead of just letting Austria run away with it.

Honestly it was a bad call, but I thought it would earn goodwill from Germany. At the time it seemed like people were scared of an Austrian solo. I also tried to negotiate for a share of the centers with Austria but it didn't pan out.Aristocrat wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 6:22 pmAnon identities are automatically revealed at the end of the game

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
...earlier I was wondering if G1 was going to draw or if Austria was going to go for a solo... I was going to post about it earlier but that darn pesky real life.
Can't wait to hear the breakdown. I see I was mentioned in the global chat that there was going to be a potential rematch and that you might need another player and I was mentioned - I think I would have enough mental cycles available to be down for that, especially if we stuck with 3-day phases. I don't think game 2 will last too much longer.
Hopefully everyone enjoyed their game.
Also, love that German army in Rumania!

vDip is excellent, as is WebDip. The vibe is a little bit different on each, but they're both great.DougJoe wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 8:46 pmAh, that's an interesting idea - I've never played on vDip so didn't know about it.JECE wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 8:34 pmI like the Extend vote feature from vDip better. Well played top table people, the game dropped out of my spectating once it was done, so to save anyone else going back to page 8 of this thread here it is:

And down the league on table 3 Russia has fallen into civil disorder.
https://webdiplomacy.net/beta/?gameID=1315991
It's not a favourable position, but if you take it on, it's either going to be a short game or a glorious one!

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
Thanks DougJoe.
I don't want to hurry Russia out of the game if life has got in the way, but it feel like the right time for a sub to tap in. What's good etiquette here? We've not got just under 3 days to the next deadline, and I'm happy to vote pause to give a sub more time if needed.

Re: Ghost Rating Challenge - 2025?
I went a little quick when game 1 had someone go into CD, so I'll give it a little longer, I'll ping a couple of the subs now to see if they're interested. If Russia hasn't reported back by say, noonish EDT tomorrow, I'll send out the PW.
