Chess tournament?
team chess #3 just ended, and sign ups filled up very quick, we even had to make extra space. since there seems to be a lot of interest in chess here, would there be interest in a tournament? idk on details yet but it's a thought

A webDippers chess tournament?
A lot of Diplomacy players are chess players too, so it could easily become a grand event!

Re: Chess tournament?
Another possibility (not necessarily better than your idea): Create a "Team" on Lichess. That gives you the ability to host your own tournaments that are limited to the players in the team. If you are okay with hosting a live tournament (which obviously has a bit of a downside), this is probably the easiest option.
Re: Chess tournament?
i'll mess around with it and see if it might work, but since webdip has a reasonably wide range of time zones i would prefer to shy away from live games if possibleSpartaculous wrote: ↑Sat Mar 22, 2025 11:45 pmAnother possibility (not necessarily better than your idea): Create a "Team" on Lichess. I'm not someone who enjoys chess, I prefer much more the game of Go.
However, I know someone who would probably be very interested; sweetandcool. Think he made a break from here since I haven't seen him posting here in a bit, but I know he is very enthusiastic about chess and surly would be an enrichment for your tournament.
And I think brain might be interested too, though I don't know how much time he has right now. Still, I'll try to contact both and inform them.

Yes, I know that sweet was actively watching the first round of team chess. I enjoyed interacting with him in my first game of mafia.Kakarroto wrote: ↑Sun Mar 23, 2025 9:35 amHowever, I know someone who would probably be very interested; sweetandcool. Re: Chess tournament?
While details for the tournament continue to be discussed, if anyone wants to challenge me to a 1-day-per-move correspondence game on Lichess, I would accept (you should be able to figure out my username from the study link in the team chess post). One more thought about a structured form of chess competition: If we had a critical mass of players, we could enter a team in the Lichess Bundesliga. They have competitions every Sunday (looks like 3:00 p.m. eastern US time right now). I've never done it, but it sounds fun: your team competes against a bunch of other teams in a free-for-all, where only the top N scores for each team count. Or something like that.

There seems to be a bit of interest so i'll put down tentative sign-ups:

putting 8 for now but feel free to add more if it fills up. current idea for how it will be run is 1 or 2 day per turn correspondence on lichess; tournament will be round robin unless there are a lot of people playing in which case idk what will happen yet. each match would consist of two games with each player playing both sides

Re: Chess tournament?
looks like sweet doesn't have time to participate currently.
Thinking about it, I could act as a 'fill-in' if the tournament needs one more, to get it rolling, but only if there is just a little too few participants, don't want to take someone's place away who would really want to play (because as I said chess isn't a favourite game for me by far), and at the end of the day, I'd probably be just a speedbump.
But would be up for it if my help is needed so it can start

Re: Chess tournament?
don't feel pressured to join, as long as there are at least two people, which we already have, the tournament can theoretically run. maybe one day there will be a go tournament :3Kakarroto wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 6:32 amlooks like sweet doesn't have time to participate currently.

This thread died down (all of the attention went over to 20Q #500, I think). How are we doing for signups?
