During the day the fog lifted.
The news of Oliver Cromwell's death reverberated through East Anglia and beyond. Royalist forces began to move across the region, seeking to take advantage before Sir Thomas Fairfax could re-assert his authority.
In Brandeston, Matthew Hopkins was in search of his assistant, Dowsing. He found Dowsing drinking with some untidy-looking wenches.
"Now look here, Dowsing," said Hopkins, sternly. "The situation is serious. This war isn't just about the English throne. It is a war for the English soul. The Puritans are afraid of witchcraft and quick to accuse any rival of popery. The Royalists are mostly Roman Catholic. They are more indulgent to such things. We may find it harder to carry on with our trade if the King is back in control. Let us string up a couple more here, take our payment, and head north."
They retired to their chambers to decide who should next be put on trial.
Dusk fell. An owl hooted. The village square was otherwise silent and still.
