Big Trouble in Little Canada
Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chyrstia Freeland resigned this morning just hours before she was meant to present the Fall Economic Statement (an off-cycle budget and fiscal update). Her resignation came soon after the Federal Housing Minister resigned. There are rumours that other Cabinet members may yet resign.
The budget figures, if they're released, will probably be quite bad. The government has almost certainly blown past its self-imposed fiscal guardrails.
This seems like the scandal that could bring down the Liberal government, which currently relies on support from an increasingly reluctant NDP to maintain power.
All this turmoil is coming right on the eve of Trump's inauguration, which could have profound economic consequences for Canada.

Trump is a short sighted idiot who will damage the USA's relations with its neighbours.

Trudeau will be in the running for worst Prime Minister in Canadian history. He leaves behind a legacy of destruction, scandals, and narcissism.
I don't know if Canada will make it out of this, but I won't give up. I still love Canada.

TBF, Trudeau is very lucky Trump and the USA distracts the world from what's going on up north...Jamiet99uk wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 10:34 pmTrump is a short sighted idiot who will damage the USA's relations with its neighbours.

My Canadian co-workers are incensed at the state of their country
Re: Big Trouble in Little Canada
No worries. Trump has the solution. Just make Canada the 51st state!

Re: Big Trouble in Little Canada
no, we should make canada the 50th state. I think delaware has had enough time as a state and since there's like literally nothing of note there, I say we revoke their state privileges, and absorb them into maryland. I think we can do away with one of the dakotas (2 is redundant when their population is so low) and pass that privilege to puerto rico.

I don't know. We spend at least 5 minutes at the Biden Welcome Center each time we have to drive down to Washington. That has got to be something of note. And where would all the companies go for the tax benefits and lax corporate governance???kingofthepirates wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 4:33 pmno, we should make canada the 50th state. I would really prefer to erase New Jersey's right to exist. The top half of NJ is just a big suburb of NYC and the bottom half is a big suburb of Philly. The most anyone usually sees of NJ is from the highway (95) which takes you from NYC to Philly and Washington. I think you would be hard pressed to find a stretch of highway more boring and frustrating to drive on.

There are only 50 states currently anyway. Everyone knows "Wyoming," is actually an old Italian word meaning "No state here."

Funny enough, my company actually has a decent sized acid production plant in Wyoming to support the refineries there.Jamiet99uk wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 5:07 pmThere are only 50 states currently anyway. Everyone knows "Wyoming," is actually an old Italian word meaning "No state here."

In reality, there's only 3 states: Florida, Collective Plot of Land Whos Inhabitants Lose to Florida Man, and OhioJamiet99uk wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 5:07 pmThere are only 50 states currently anyway. Everyone knows "Wyoming," is actually an old Italian word meaning "No state here."

That is a bit unfair.
Newark is a dirty, smelly, corrupt, crime ridden cesspool built on top of infrastructure that is literally crumbling away.
NYC is nothing like...oh wait.

Re: Big Trouble in Little Canada
The Liberal leadership race hasn't started in earnest yet, so it's all very speculative. I think the Liberal Party's strongest possible leadership contender might be Mark Carney, a former BoE Governor (among other things) and a well-known technocrat. He would not have to own Trudeau-era mishaps and could credibly signal a course correction for the Liberals. Some other potential contenders, such as former Deputy PM Freeland and some current Cabinet Ministers, will have a very hard time convincing Canadians they represent something other than the status quo.
With current polling, I think it will be vey difficult for any incoming Liberal Party leader to defeat the Conservative Pierre Poilievre in the upcoming election, so it may not matter very much. I do hope it ends up being a competitive election. I think the Conservatives are at risk of indulging their base too much if it looks like a guaranteed majority.
Re: Big Trouble in Little Canada
Who would want to become Prime Minister only a few months before an electoral shellacking? Perhaps it is time for another woman Canadian Prime Minister?:

Re: Big Trouble in Little Canada
How embarrassing that our only female PM was a caretaker, especially given the high caliber of woman cabinet ministers and premiers over the years.
In an alternative universe the coming election might have been Freeland v. Ambrose.
