Re: Pairs Diplomacy Observer Thread
Looks like the French general was so busy seizing power that he forgot to give orders.

Re: Pairs Diplomacy Observer Thread
After 3 years commenting on the game without possibly influencing it still feels difficult, but the diplomacy thread has had some funny drama.

I know I am an active player/diplomat in the game, but I wrote up a little summary in the form of an alternate history timeline if anyone would like to read it!

I'd like to read it (I'm also active, as a general), if allowed. If not, I'd like to read it after the game ends :].DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 4:13 pmI know I am an active player/diplomat in the game, but I wrote up a little summary in the form of an alternate history timeline if anyone would like to read it!

I’ll send it, I don’t think it will have any bearing on future turns.

Re: Pairs Diplomacy Observer Thread
With the dawn of a new century, the European Great Powers (the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the French Third Republic, the German Empire, the Kingdom of Italy, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire) have decided to determine the balance of power on the Continent. Through diplomacy, warfare, deals, and lies, the seven nations continue to expand their spheres of influence.
1901
* Not content with Schleswig-Holstein, Germany starts to incorporate parts of Denmark and the Netherlands into the empire.
* The Sweden-Norway personal union breaks apart, with Norway aligning itself with England while Sweden looks to Russia.
* France starts to install pro-French governments in Iberia.
* Austria-Hungary, Russia, and the Ottomans seek to reincorporate parts of the recently independent Balkans into their empire, - Bulgaria falls under the influence of the Turks, Rumania under the Russians, and Serbia, Albania, and Greece under the Austrians.
* Russia and Turkey conduct joint naval training exercises on the Black Sea, while France and Germany agree to leave Belgium independent for now.
* Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary agree to a triple non-aggression pact.
* The Italians occupy Tunis, perhaps miffed by the “slap of Tunis” in 1881.
* England sends an army to Norway and a fleet to the Barents Sea.
* In winter, Russia declares war on England for the Barents aggression.
* Germany and France, after deliberation, decide to aid Russia and plan to launch a naval invasion of England.
1902
* Italy declares war on France with tacit approval from the Ottomans - perhaps the Italians were tired of being bit players in the colonization of North Africa and wanted to be able to dictate terms.
* Russia and Turkey start to pressure Austria-Hungary’s borders, but the Austrian general uses some smart tactics to hold them off.
* England and Russia continue to skirmish in Scandinavia.
* A military coup occurs in France, with their top diplomat fleeing to Berlin. Rather than fight the English, the new French generalissimo amasses troops on the Franco-German border. Perhaps this general harbors revanchist sentiments with regard to Alsace-Lorraine, and was influenced by the late General Boulanger.
* In response, the Germans occupy Belgium.
* As a result of the coup, France falls into civil disorder. German troops advance into Burgundy, ostensibly to help quell the unrest. The eastern French army is disbanded, and a new general comes to power, taking control of the country and raising a new army out of the Parisian rabble. The French diplomat returns to Paris.
* German fleets break into the North Sea, menacing the British isles.
1903
* Germany declares war on the new French regime, supposedly out of a fear of the revolution spreading eastwards. Spain and Portugal have already thrown their lot behind the French.
* The French generalissimo organizes a brilliant defense of Marseilles, taking the German and Italian armies by surprise.
* The Russians dislodge the English from Norway, while the English recall their fleets to help defend Britain. However, the English army slogs through Finland and marches into St Petersburg in the fall.
* In the south, the Balkan war heats up as a Turkish army lands in Greece and starts to retake the country, which had only been independent from the Ottomans for around 80 years. Meanwhile, tired of border squabbles, the Austrian general presses in to Rumania, defeating the Russian army stationed there.
* The Austrian diplomat, who disappeared mysteriously on a ski vacation, is replaced by a new woman diplomat, a relative of the royal family.
* In fall, after an agreement between the new Austrian diplomat and the Russians, Rumania is returned to Russian protection while the Austrians press south and force the Turks out of Bulgaria. Whether the denizens of the Balkans see these armies as liberators or conquerors remains to be seen.
* The French general orders a strategic retreat, allowing the German army to occupy the provinces of Picardy and Burgundy. Nevertheless, the major cities of France have held strong against the German and Italian invaders.
As of the end of 1903, there are three separate wars raging in Europe:
* A Scandinavian/Arctic theater between Britain and Russia, with Germany attempting to provide some naval support to Russia.
* A French theater, with Germany and Italy attacking the new French regime from the east.
* And a Balkan theater, with Russia, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire exchanging the various smaller nations like playing cards.
* So far, these wars have not yet collided and lead to the formation of grand alliances and coalitions like in our own timeline. But who knows what will result?
* None of the powers have changed their relative strength since 1902, with Germany and Russia leading the pack in terms of territory but not by much.

Re: Pairs Diplomacy Observer Thread
Nice recap.
I've heard the replacement French General is keeping a war journal with plans to publish it at an appropriate time.

This sort of chaos and political dysfunction is why the Balkans would do better under Ottoman rule :).FlaviusAetius wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 11:35 ami uhhkicog19408@lisoren wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 11:01 amhey , you can take over from me , if u like or interested . i can resign & u will active as diplomat again .FlaviusAetius wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 9:19 amThe snow hit hard ;(

Re: Pairs Diplomacy Observer Thread
Internal infighting and politics prevented the new French General from being promoted in time to participate in the war in the Autumn of 1902. Had things not been so bogged down in the command structure of French military, the war would have gone *much* differently...DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 6:29 pm1902

I've recently returned to the site after a couple of years of neglecting the Great Game. This is an absolutely fabulous idea, and the diplomat thread and the game are fascinating. How did this get started?
