Eisenhower uses the term "military-industrial complex" during his Farewell Address. This use popularized the phrase. On February 1st, the US tests its first Minuteman I ICBM. March 11 sees in introduction of the "Ken" doll to the US. On September 7, Tom and Jerry made a return with their first cartoon short since 1958. Melvin Calvin was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry this year.

1961 is the most recent upside down year, and using the digits 0,1,6,8,9 (which are the only digits when turned upside down are clearly distinguishable as other digits), the next year with these properties does not occur until 6009.
