Apparently Jamie put that in for Round 271 (Olivia Newton-John). How did I not notice that until now?Spartaculous wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2024 11:56 pmPer Rule 10, I humbly apologize to the QM, and beg for forgiveness.

Re: Twenty Questions: Round 324
There are so damn many possibilities. With the link to TV, I wanted it to be Ricky Nelson, but he died before 1999. Then I thought the most famous, Michael Jackson, but he achieved fame as part of the Jackson 5. I'll just throw a dart and guess James Taylor.

No
Yes
No
A final hint on fame, by way of analogy. Given her stratospheric success over the last 10 years as a pure pop musician, I would not say Taylor Swift has primarily attained fame by being a country musician, although that is how she initially attained it.

Re: Twenty Questions: Round 324
I swear, if that's it, after I mentioned him ...Michael Jackson?
The question was how this person "attained" fame, not how he's known today. Michael Jackson attained more fame than most people in the world as part of a group. That he later extended his fame doesn't change how he attained it.

Yeah, I was hoping if it was Michael Jackson the answer would be Pass. But the hint made me wondercdngooner wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 2:19 amI swear, if that's it, after I mentioned him ...Michael Jackson?

It is Michael Jackson (died 15 years ago today; the pick was not random). Though if you feel bad about the win you don't need to be QM and can pass the baton off to cdngooner.DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 2:23 amYeah, I was hoping if it was Michael Jackson the answer would be Pass. As to the controversy: the question asked if the person attained fame "primarily" as a member of a band or musical group. Jackson as a solo artist was orders of magnitude bigger than the Jackson 5 (particularly in the 95% of the world outside the US, most of which did not care about Motown). Given that fame is not something that can actually be measured and apportioned, I made the judgment call that a more significant portion of his fame was attained during his solo career than his group career.
I did not answer this intending to deceive people, so like I said if you really feel like it was answered incorrectly you are welcome to transfer the win.

Hmm… I’ll see what cdngooner has to say. For what it’s worth I didn’t just directly crib the answer, I had MJ in mind after guessing Prince and was going to guess him during the 5 guesses anyway. But like cdngooner I was influenced by my “primarily attained fame in a group” question and your hint is what made me more certain.Aristocrat wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 3:28 amIt is Michael Jackson (died 15 years ago today; the pick was not random). Naah, its all good. Its just a game. You go for it DreamTrawler. We can all have objections to how a QM answers a question, but at the end of the day its the QM's prerogative and we have to adapt. Congrats on not getting caught up in the semantic weeds like I did.
