Mafia XL - A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

#1 Post by Foxcastle » Wed Oct 24, 2018 7:29 pm

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game (for the town majority) is to kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

GENERAL RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day, and post at least twice per game day.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing, or copied mechanics.
5. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game notes.
6. All players are forbidden from cheating.
7. All players are required to play to win.
8. Players and/or teams may not concede the game in public.
9. All players must not +1 other players' posts.

Due to recent rule-breaking, the rules will be STRICTLY ENFORCED during this game.

ELABORATION

0. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios pre-emptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible.

1. You MUST cast a vote at least once during each day phase. You may vote and then 'unvote' (see below) if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an 'unvote' in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted. During each day phase, every player MUST make at least two game-related posts. The GMs will use reasonable discretion when applying this rule.

2. All role PMs have been posted in the setup information. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; after all, the fun of this game is reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside software or other tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. Only GM endorsed QuickTopic threads can be used for communicating with one another outside of the main game thread; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging between players. You may PM the GM with questions or instructions.

5. Players who have been removed from the game are no longer playing the game, and will not be permitted to comment on it in private messages or comment threads. A special QuickTopic "God Thread" will be opened for individuals who wish to spectate on the game, or players who have been eliminated. Use this channel to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you are considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, message the GM about it before saying/doing it and the GM will let you know whether it is allowed or not.

To clarify further: Players may not copy and paste any game related Mechanics. Players may not doctor, and create fake game related mechanics. Players may not share personal correspondence between GM to player under any circumstances. The GM will not confirm any claims, or adjudicate based upon anything that could easily be sorted out through questioning and evidentiary circumstance.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. If someone wishes to concede defeat, they must PM the GM, or post in their relevant QT thread for the GM to check it over. Public concessions are not permitted.

9. You are not permitted to click the "+1" on any other player's in-game posts. Giving +1s to the GM, by contrast, is actively encouraged.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. Sanctions such as future bans will be determined by the consensus of the active player base after the game has concluded. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the site moderators/admins, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. Replacement is not guaranteed.

ROLE ACTIONS
If you have any actions to take, please PM your action the GM. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point. Mafia's nightkill and roleblock will be voted on in the mafia QuickTopic thread.

VOTING

There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

“Lynch” vote: The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE VECNA) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during an execution vote, no one shall be killed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double hashtags your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.

Must Vote: At the end of the Day phase, all participating players must have their vote on a candidate. You may ##VOTE and then ##UNVOTE if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an ##UNVOTE in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted.

Hammer Vote: The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of hashes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of players are voting to endhammer the same player. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day. Night phases may not normally be hammered - any exception to this will be announced by the GM.

Mafia Vote: The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their factional NK (nightkill) target during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill Zultar (< b > kill Zultar < / b >). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the oldest vote will break the tie. The oldest vote determines which member of the Mafia team actually performs the kill.

TURN DURATION

This game’s Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g., hammer). Extensions may be granted at the GM’s discretion, but don’t count on it.

Phase shifts will be at 5:00 PM Eastern Time/4:00 PM Central Time/10:00 PM GMT(UK) Time/11:00 PM CET. GMs will endeavor to announce the end of phase promptly, but for the purposes of voting, any votes posted before the GM’s announcement of the end of the phase will be accepted.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Daylight Saving Time ends in the US on Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 AM ET, at which point the GMs’ clocks will be set back by 1 hour. Additionally, various other DST and Summer Time shifts will happen on October 28 and November 4 in other countries. All players are encouraged to curse and demean this ridiculous policy. GMs will post reminders, and as usual, vote counts will include time remaining to deadlines. The Peterbot also lists time remaining on phases.

ROLES AND MECHANICS

16 Romans (Town)

DOCTOR: “You are the DOCTOR. Each day you must vote for a suspect. Each night, you may visit a player by PM'ing the GM with the order ##SAVE [player]. At the end of the night, if they have been targeted by the mafia you will save their life. You will know if you successfully performed a save. Your target will be notified only if they have been successfully saved. You may visit yourself. You may not visit the same player on consecutive nights. You win when all of the Mafia have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

COP: “You are the COP. Each day you must vote for a suspect. Each night, you may investigate a player by PM'ing the GM with the order ##INVESTIGATE [player]. Your target will not be aware of your visit. At the end of the night, you will receive a report telling you whether that player is sided with the Mafia or the Town. Certain roles may give false results here. You win when all of the Mafia have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

OBSERVER: “You are the OBSERVER. Each day you must vote for a suspect. Each night, you may observe a player by PM’ing the GM with the order ##OBSERVE [player]. Your target will not be aware of your visit. At the end of the night, you will receive a report telling you who visited that player and who that player visited. You may not observe the same player on consecutive nights. You win when all of the Mafia have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

VANILLA TOWNIES (x11): “You are a VANILLA TOWNIE. Each day you must vote for a suspect. You win when all of the Mafia have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

MILLERS (x2): “You are a VANILLA TOWNIE. Each day you must vote for a suspect. You win when all of the Mafia have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.” (Millers receive the same Role PM as Vanilla Townies, but if they are investigated by the Cop, they will appear to be sided with the Mafia.)

5 Greeks (Mafia)

GODFATHER: “You are the GODFATHER. Each day you must vote for a suspect. If you are investigated by the Cop, you will appear to be sided with the Town. At night you can talk to the other Mafia in the Mafia QT at <link>. Your teammates are <list>. You win when all of the Town have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

DRIVER: “You are the DRIVER. Each day you must vote for a suspect. THREE times per game, at Night, you may visit two living players by PM-ing both GMs with the order ##DRIVE [player] and [player]. Any person who attempts to visit one of those people will visit the other chosen person instead. At night you can talk to the other Mafia in the Mafia QT at <link>. Your teammates are <list>. You win when all of the Town have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

HOOKER: “You are the the HOOKER. Each day you must vote for a suspect. Each night, you may visit another player by PM'ing both GMs with the order ##ROLEBLOCK [player]. If that player attempts any night actions, they will fail. They will learn that they were roleblocked. However, the roleblock will not prevent the target from delivering Pandora’s Box. At night you can talk to the other Mafia in the Mafia QT at <link>. Your teammates are <list>. You win when all of the Town have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

GOONS (x2): “You are a MAFIA GOON. Each day you must vote for a suspect. At night you can talk to the other Mafia in the Mafia QT at <link>. Your teammates are <list>. You win when all of the Town have been eliminated, or nothing can stop this from happening.”

Pandora’s Box

Pandora’s Box is an item that is passed around between players and grants various items and effects. It begins with a random player at the start of Day 1. It contains 4-6 items. The number of items is randomly determined, and the items in the box are randomly drawn from the following list.
  • BULLETPROOF VEST: “You have received the Armor of Ares! This item is applied immediately and will protect you from one gunshot during the game, after which it will be used up.” (There is a maximum of 1 Bulletproof Vest. Because Bulletproof Vests are applied immediately, they protect the recipient from gunshots that same night. Bulletproof vests do not protect against the Mafia Night Kill.)
  • GUNS: “You have received the Arrow of Artemis! This is a one shot kill. You may order the kill by PM’ing both GMs ##SHOOT [player]. Kills ordered during the Night phase will adjudicate at End Of Night. Kills ordered during the Day will adjudicate as soon as the GMs receive (and are able to process) the order. You may not order a kill in the last 10 minutes of the Day.” (There are a maximum of 2 Guns.)
  • FIRST AID KIT: “You have received the Staff of Asclepius! Once, during a Night phase, you may use this item to save another player’s life from the Mafia night kill or a gunshot by PM’ing both GMs ##SAVE [player]. You will know if you successfully performed a save. Your target will be notified only if they have been successfully saved. The item is used up whether your save is successful or not.” (There is a maximum of 1 First Aid Kit. The Doctor can receive and use First Aid Kits in addition to their save.)
  • ROLEBLOCKS: “You have received a bottle of Papa Papadopoulos’s Popularly Opulent Ouzo! Once, during a Night phase, you may use this item to prevent another player from carrying out their night actions by PM’ing both GMs ##ROLEBLOCK [player]. If that player attempts any night actions, they will fail. They will learn they were roleblocked. However, this will not prevent delivery of Pandora’s Box. This item is used up regardless of whether the target attempted to carry out any night actions or not.” (There are a maximum of 2 Roleblocks. The Hooker can receive and use roleblock items in addition to their roleblock power.)
  • COP/ROLE SCANS: “You have received the Eyes of Apollo! Once, during a Night phase, you may investigate a player by PM'ing the GM with the order ##INVESTIGATE [player]. Your target will not be aware of your visit. If you are Town, at the end of the night, you will receive a report telling you whether that player is sided with the Mafia or the Town. Certain roles may give false results here. If you are Mafia, you will receive a report telling you if that player’s role is vanilla or not vanilla.” (There are a maximum of 2 Cop/Role Scans. The Cop can receive and use additional Cop/Role Scan items in addition to their investigation power.)
  • SCAN SWAPS: “You have received the Cloak of Circe! Subsequent Cop/Role Scans will report the opposite of what your previous alignment/role report would have been. For Cop Scans, if you are a Vanilla Townie or the Godfather, you will be reported as sided with the Mafia; if you are a Mafia (not Godfather) or Miller, you will be reported as sided with the Town. For Role Scans, if you are a Vanilla Townie, you will be report as Not Vanilla; if you are the Cop, Doctor, Observer, or a Miller, you will be reported as Vanilla. This effect is permanent.” (There are a maximum of 2 Scan Swaps. Scan swaps do not affect death announcements, which always reveal the players true alignment and role.)
  • ORACLE REVEALS: The Oracle of Delphi will reveal your actual alignment publicly in the game thread at the End of Night. You will not receive an effect PM. Your specific role will not be revealed. There are a maximum of 2 Oracle Reveals.
  • DOUBLE VOTES: “You have received the Abacus of Eris! During the next Day phase, your vote will be counted twice in the final official vote count used to determine the lynch. This effect will only appear in the final vote total that is announced after the phase has ended.” (There are a maximum of 2 Double Votes.)
During the Night phase, the player with the Box must either TAKE or LIST, and also designate the next recipient of the Box.

The player with the Box may TAKE an item from the box by PM’ing both GMs ##TAKE. The player will receive the next item/effect in the Box. Players always know what item they receive.

Alternately, a player with the Box may instead PM ##LIST to both GMs. The player will then receive a complete list of every player who has possessed the Box, in chronological order. This option can only be used once or twice (as randomly determined) during the game. If a player requests the LIST option after it has already been used up by previous players, they will instead receive the next item in the Box.

If the player with the Box does not request either option, the next item in the Box will be randomly distributed to another player.

The player with the Box must also designate the next recipient of the Box by PM’ing both GMs ##SEND TO [player]. This counts as a visit from the player with the Box to the recipient and cannot be roleblocked. The Box cannot be delivered to the player who had it immediately prior, but a player may receive the Box multiple times if two or more people receive it in between. If the player with the Box does not designate a new recipient, they will deliver it to a random player. If the player with the Box tries to deliver it to the player who had it immediately prior, they will instead deliver it to a random player. The player with the Box will not be informed of any changes in the recipient of the Box.

If the recipient of the Box has been targeted for the Mafia Night Kill, the Box will block the Night Kill. The target of the Night Kill will not be informed that they were saved.

If the player with the Box is lynched or shot during the Day, the Box is automatically delivered to a random player.

If there are no more items in the Box to draw at the start of the Night Phase, it explodes at the end of the Night Phase and kills the player holding it. A visit by the Doctor or the application of a First Aid Kit will save the player from being killed by the Box.

Order of Operations, Role Interactions, and Other Clarifications

1. Box is opened (items received/effects applied/explosion)
2. Hooker/other roleblocks
3. Observer/Driver/Cop/Box delivery
4. Mafia Night Kill/Gunshots
5. Doctor saves/First Aid Kits

The Box explosion prevents the victim from carrying out any night actions, even if they are saved.

If the Box is ever delivered to a random player, that does not include either the player currently holding the Box or the player who had the Box immediately prior.

If the Hooker targets the player delivering the Box, any night actions that player has ordered will be roleblocked and the target will be informed that they were roleblocked, but will still deliver the Box to its recipient.

The Hooker can be roleblocked by the roleblock item; the use of the roleblock item can be blocked by the Hooker. If the Hooker and the user of the roleblock item target each other on the same Night, both will be informed that they were roleblocked.

If the Driver targets the recipient of the Box, the player delivering the Box will not be aware but will deliver to the Driver’s other target. If the driver’s other target is the player who had the Box immediately prior, the Box will be delivered to another random player instead.
If the Driver targets the sender of the Box, the delivery to the recipient is not affected.

If the Doctor, Cop, Observer, Hooker, or user of an item visits one of the Driver's targets, their action(s) will be directed to the Driver’s other target. This is true even if it ends up directing their action at themself. Any reports generated will accurately note which player was the actual target in the end.
If the Doctor, Cop, Observer, Hooker, or user of an item is visited by the Driver, this has no effect on their action(s).

If the Observer targets one of the Driver’s targets, they will then observe the other target, and will also observe that the Driver visited that player.
If the Observer observes the Driver, they will see the two people the Driver visits, as well as anyone who visits the Driver.

If the Driver targets the Mafia Night Kill victim, then the Mafia will instead attempt to Night Kill the Driver’s other target.

If the Mafia Driver targets both the Doctor’s current target and the Doctor’s previous target, the doctor will visit their previous target. Under this case, the Doctor can visit the same player two nights in a row.

It seems all of Rome is gathered at the forum—slaves and nobles, foreigners and patrician families, the Senate and the Roman legions. Trumpets blare and the crowd goes silent. Pseudolus steps forward and announces:

“Webdippers, I bid you welcome. The Forum is a temple, and we are here to worship the gods of tragedy and comedy. Tonight, I am pleased to announce..” he consults a scroll, “..um, a tragedy? That can’t be right…”

An elderly assistant scuttles out and whispers in his ear.

“Yes, I know most of them are going to die.” More whispering. “Yes, I know that they’ll turn on eachother like rats on a sinking ship. … Of course they’re going to string up their own teammates. … Yes, I know the Box explodes, that’s the point!”

The assistant shrugs at Pseudolus, who says, “Look, I hear what you’re saying, but trust me, what you’re describing is a comedy. If they want tragedy, they can go to the politics subforum.”

He continues his announcement to the crowd, “I am pleased to announce a comedy! Our story takes place here in the Forum of ancient Rome, where the heroic Legions have just returned from war in Greece. They bring with them treasures the likes of which have never been seen. Among their spoils of war, an ancient artifact as powerful as it is unpredictable: Pandora’s Box!

“But the Greeks, though defeated in battle, will not let Pandora’s Box go so easily! They have sent their most nefarious spies to reclaim the treasure!” Pseudolus points at the crowd, “Among you, hidden beneath your very togas, are men and/or women in other togas! Greek togas! Who will stop at nothing to reclaim the artifact!”

Senex, a befuddled old man, raises his toga to look for Greeks lurking there.

“Senex, please! If we wanted that kind of horror we’d go to the politics subfor—wait, I already made that joke! Nevermind, we have to find those Greeks!”

This is quite a tough setup for town. The millers and the driver really make the Cop a lot less useful, and Pandora's box could make things quite swingy.

This is quite a tough setup for town. The millers and the driver really make the Cop a lot less useful, and Pandora's box could make things quite swingy.
Hopefully the Observer can get good info with so much stuff going on at night.

Don't we already now know that rdrivera is scum as usual, so why not lynch him immediately?

HAVE YOU NOTICED that rdrivera's user name is very similar to DRIVER which is a scum PR? Is that not all prof we need?

##VOTE rDRIVER
I always suspect him, but last time I was wrong, so I will try to repress my tendency this time.

You make a very good case about his name though.

Friends, Fellow Townies, countrymen, lend me your eyes. I confirm that I have read my Role PM and I demand that everyone else confirm they have read theirs.

Proof of my confirmation is 574R178LIOPO918BFG178WFDE7718REG1B9J1298.
I did so too but I didn't have a confirmation code. Is code VANILLA TOWN?

But, whenever Jamie starts talking about mechanics in his first few posts it means he is scum so ##VOTE JAMIE
