How do I configure a Private Game?

#1 Post by BGross » Thu Jun 13, 2024 5:30 am

I'm looking to set up a game for me and my friends, but I don't understand how to send them the game link or edit the game once it's made. Also, are there any tools I can use to GM or moderate the game? (I'd like to force myself into Italy since I have the most experience) Are there any resources available which teach how to set up a private multiplayer game in webdiplomacy? Thanks

The Game ID is in the web address for the game, for example:

https://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=1000016

So once you create the game, go to the game page, and copy-paste the link (with the relevant "gameID=xxxx" included, and send that link (with the password you've set) to your friends.

Ordinary player accounts are not able to assign countries - they are assigned at random when the game starts.
Potato, potato; potato.

Is there a different kind of account I could make which would be able to assign countries / moderate the game?

Update, the link approach doesn't actually work unless all users have changed their default map UI to Dropdown Menus. Crazy that there's that much searching just to find the Join Game button.

Still curious if there's a way I can get access to moderate a private game with friends. Also would be interested in whether it's possible to play a private game with a combination of humans and bots, since it seems the only ways to play now are with 6 other people or by myself.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure only moderator accounts can moderate games now. However you could perhaps make a case for such feature.

I think gunboat games can be filled with bots.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for!

As a brand new user, I'd say this site has the best UI in-game, and being able to try out a bot-match is great to get new players into using the controls, but the back-end work to set up a private game almost drove me to find a different solution. The main issue for sure is the default UI not giving an opportunity to input the game password and therefore being unable to join the game.

Some recommendations from my newb experience:
I think adding a page under "Help" with "Game Setup" or something would be super helpful to let new players onboard themselves without having to come ask questions in the forum.

I would also love to see some basic moderation tools for private games, like force pause, force end the phase timer, and maybe even being able to add bots mid-game (Idk what happens if someone gets bored and wants to leave mid-game). Since a private game is all presumably between friends anyway that would help me ensure my friends have a good time and want to play again! :)

Thanks again!

Another note, as I figure out how to set this up: You can only seem to join from the /board.php page (as mentioned above). However, links to the /board.php page appear to default to the /beta? page. That re-routing persisted even after having the other user change their default map UI to dropdown menus, and from the /beta? page a game cannot be joined.

Adding to my list of desired features, I would like the ability to force-start a fill-with-AIs game as a host. Though that does seem like it only applies in my use-case. Also, I would like "My Games" to be listed under the "Games" bar.
