Gulf of Lyon(s)
Gulf of Lyon(s)
Just noticed that the small map shows Gulf of Lyon, whereas the big map and the orders log say Gulf of Lyons. My physical board says Lyons as well. Not sure if this is a bug or a character limit/aesthetic thing.
Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
The small map is only capable of containing one Lyon, whereas the large map has a larger Gulf capable of containing multiple Lyons.
Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
Lyon? Only in Kenya.
Google suggest it should be Gulf of Lion, so I'm not even sure where this name came from.
Wikipedia insists that's a typo.
Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
It is indeed spelled 'Gulf of Lion', according to the English wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Lion
Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
"Lion" could be the French spelling. But I've always seen it spelled with a "y" instead.

Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
If I ask Google Maps to show me the Gulf of Lyon, it directs me to a Shell gas station in Arlington, VA...

Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
My bookshelf game version of Diplomacy spells "Eastern Mediterrranean" with three Rs.
Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
the actual name is:
Gulfe du Lion, and it is not pronounced at all like the English word "lion" the big cat, The first syllable has a ee sound, not an i sound. So it's sort of like lee - ON, but the on is nasal sound unique to French. It sounds nothing like Lion in English.

Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
I believe Gulf of Lyon is an old spelling, which (while largely out of fashion) was still used at the time of Diplomacy's publication. You can see it on older maps. Similarly with Rumania (now Romania).
Re: Gulf of Lyon(s)
English spellings of French names are often different. I quite enjoy "Marseilles", from the French "Marseille". I guess English speakers figured there must have been an extra silent letter there, and so added one.
Related fun fact: Google Maps set to UK English says "Marseilles", set to US English it says "Marseille".

Claesar, are you sure that “don’t read the rules” is the position you want to be taking as a moderator?
