Head of a state where the predominant language spoken is a Romance language?
Careful. Do you mean just "head of state" or did you mean to include "head of government"?

No (incl. HoG)

Skipping since the above would rule out Romania.

Carol I of Romania
That's an intriguing guess. I would not have guessed him because he was in Germany until he was 27, born of German parents with no connection with Romania, so there is no reason to believe his first language was not German.

Just to reiterate, I’m using Wikipedia as my source of truth for this, including (but not limited to) the HoS/HoG question

Asking Question 19:

Was this person a head of state (not someone who was only a head of government)?

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 9 14 Real human born in what is currently Germany 1717-1879 and who died in Europe

8 10 11 15 16 17 Primarily known for politics and a head of government or state that did not have territory that is within current Germany nor of France, Monaco, Belgium or Switzerland and not a monarch of Britain

13 Never a UK cabinet member

Passed - Native speaker of a romance language

Not Leo von Caprivi (Dream Trawler)
Some corrections here: we know this person is male (and dead, but that is clear from the birth year), and we don't actually know if this person died in Europe, because the question was "born *or* died in Europe".

Also, the years are 1717-1849, not 1879. We also know the person is male.

He seems to have spoken French, though?

Well, I used my free guess prematurely but I have an inkling so let me try this.

Born 1774 or later?

If no - Klemens von Metternich?

"spoke French better than German" so why would the Romance Language question be passed?

Yeah, that's true. I guess because whether French or German was his "native language" is not a sure thing?

It is Metternich.

As to why pass on the native language question: he was born in Germany to German parents and undoubtedly encountered a lot of German at a young age. Later being educated in French, I didn’t have the level of certainty needed to say that French (or German) was his “native” language. FWIW if someone had re-asked the question I would have said yes to the Romance language question.

Edit: IMO native language questions, like race questions, start to break down very quickly once you have a subject that doesn’t fit neatly into one bucket.
