Careful. Do you mean just "head of state" or did you mean to include "head of government"?Head of a state where the predominant language spoken is a Romance language?

Re: Twenty Questions: Round 307
That's an intriguing guess. I would not have guessed him because he was in Germany until he was 27, born of German parents with no connection with Romania, so there is no reason to believe his first language was not German.Carol I of Romania

Just to reiterate, I’m using Wikipedia as my source of truth for this, including (but not limited to) the HoS/HoG question

Asking Question 19:
Was this person a head of state (not someone who was only a head of government)?

Some corrections here: we know this person is male (and dead, but that is clear from the birth year), and we don't actually know if this person died in Europe, because the question was "born *or* died in Europe".damo666 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 12:08 pm1 2 3 4 5 6 7 9 14 Real human born in what is currently Germany 1717-1879 and who died in Europe

Also, the years are 1717-1849, not 1879. We also know the person is male.Hominidae wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:35 pmSome corrections here: we know this person is male (and dead, but that is clear from the birth year), and we don't actually know if this person died in Europe, because the question was "born *or* died in Europe".damo666 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 12:08 pm1 2 3 4 5 6 7 9 14 Real human born in what is currently Germany 1717-1879 and who died in Europe

He seems to have spoken French, though?

Re: Twenty Questions: Round 307
Well, I used my free guess prematurely but I have an inkling so let me try this.
Born 1774 or later?
If no - Klemens von Metternich?

"spoke French better than German" so why would the Romance Language question be passed?DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:56 pmWell, I used my free guess prematurely but I have an inkling so let me try this.

Re: Twenty Questions: Round 307
Yeah, that's true. I guess because whether French or German was his "native language" is not a sure thing?damo666 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 4:27 pm"spoke French better than German" so why would the Romance Language question be passed?DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 3:56 pmWell, I used my free guess prematurely but I have an inkling so let me try this.

Re: Twenty Questions: Round 307
It is Metternich.
As to why pass on the native language question: he was born in Germany to German parents and undoubtedly encountered a lot of German at a young age. Later being educated in French, I didn’t have the level of certainty needed to say that French (or German) was his “native” language. FWIW if someone had re-asked the question I would have said yes to the Romance language question.
Edit: IMO native language questions, like race questions, start to break down very quickly once you have a subject that doesn’t fit neatly into one bucket.
